Or if it had launched with say, a $400 price tag instead of $600.
That mattered much less. People can be convinced to buy expensive things if the product is good and the marketing is clever. Look at Apple.
$600 was a lot of bones for the early adopting audience of a videogame machine, especially considering how all things relating to it went up in price as well. It didn't matter to me either that it was a bluray player since the movies were $30 and up at launch. The initial price was a big problem for most people. I spent $500 on the MGS bundle because it was BC (waste of money) and BC was going away.
In hindsight I wished I'd have waited a few years to get the PS3. I'd much rather spend $300 on a bare bones machine to play a hand full of exclusives than the heavy premium I paid.
Average customer wasn't going to jump on a $600 game console that made you buy a $50 HDMI cable at bestbuy. I know you can order one off of amazon or ebay dirt cheap, but that doesn't do you any good when you buy it at the store.
I can't deny your Apple angle though, that's why Apple is Apple.
now that sony has overtaken the xbox, i really wouldnt say that the console war would have been that different, if you look at the big picture
sony was not catching the wii this generation, you gotta tip your hat to those guys
@smartguy
i paid 540 bucks for my ps3 on launch week…i paid more for a verizon voyager once. Whats the bigger waste of money? lol
Those numbers are being disputed, the most analysts saying that PS3 will overtake Xbox 360 next year.
If anything, PS3 would have surpassed Xbox 360 sales sooner if the marketing wasn't crap.
I paid $400 for my Sega Saturn on launch day back in 1995. I paid $600 for my PS2 on launch day in 2000. I wised up and got my 60Gb PS3 a month or so after launch and got it for $300 (mail-in rebate).
I still haven’t bought a 360 (been given to me twice).
@thundercracker
Touché
Lol adjust that $400 for inflation. You'll laugh
Actually I might cry. Especially since I never actually bought any games for it. There were so few I just played the cool demos that came with it then it pretty much disappeared.
Comes out to $575.
