3D Star Wars Movies Coming in 2012? Is Nothing Sacred?!?

Just when you thought George Lucas hasn’t done enough to tarnish the Star Wars franchise, it looks like the movies will hit theaters in 3D next year. Yes, Jar Jar Binks and those frickin’ ewoks will torture you in three dimensions. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set to re-release the entire Star Wars franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Though the 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas was purportedly waiting until there were enough 3D screens available to make the release a sizable enough event.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas personally overseeing the process to make sure each one is as perfected as possible. Lucas has said that the Avatar experience convinced him that Star Wars was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Sadly, the 3D extravaganza will begin chronologically with The Phantom Menace. *sigh* I love the original trilogy. I’m actually scared to see it in 3D. I’m going to try to keep an open mind, but it’s going to be difficult. Until I actually watch the movies, I’m going to keep wondering, “Why does George Lucas insist on ruining some of my most precious childhood memories? Why?!?”

What do you think? Will Star Wars work in 3D?

  1. I wish this whole 3D hoopla would just go away.

Still, I can't blame movie executives for trying anything they can to make up for lost revenue no matter how gimmicky it is. I only ask that they not insult our intelligence and give us consumers the choice. Sadly, my plea has fallen on deaf ears.

  2. All I can really say is Han shot first. Until my mind is changed by an amazing 3D experience that is the mentality that I hold towards this idea of changing this franchise.

  3. I love the original trilogy and episode 3 the most. I think the second trilogy will be better in 3D than the originals because a lot of that stuff is dated unless they are going to update the cgi. But I would love to see the pod racing scene in Avatar like 3D, ah who am I kidding I'm going to see them all.

  4. Step 1: Create new reason for ppl to pay to see Star Wars

Step 2: Charge more than a regular 3D movie because it is Star Wars

Step 3: Release them on Bluray without 3D each year

Step 4: Release them on Bluray 3D after half are done

Step 5: Release them all on Bluray Inside of a Stormtrooper head case

Step 6: Release them all on Bluray 3D in a Darth Vader head in 7 years.

Step 7: Repeat steps 1-6 when the new fad comes along.

i knew it! i knew you were George Lucas all along!

I will still see it my favorite SW movies are 3-6, with 5 being my top one. I just like it when the bad guys win.

  6. @Smartguy;

See? That's the problem with you number-crunching types; always so meticulously detailed and boring. I could have just condensed your marketing plan in three easy steps:

    Step 1: Create Star Wars.

    Step 2: ???

    Step 3: Profit!

  7. Haha.

I think the best explanation I've ever seen is the southpark episode where Lucas is plowing a stormtrooper.
