Coffee Talk #177: Your Videogame Development “Big Three”

With LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh creating the “big three” with the Miami Heat, people are coming up with all sorts of killer combos. Whether you’re talking about triumvirates in sports, television, or adult films, it’s fun to dream up “big three” combinations. Let’s do the same for videogame development! Who would be your videogame dream team?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Intelligentsia’s Finca San Jose Nicaragua, Mel Gibson’s anger, or the RAW mystery GM, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Who would be your videogame dream team?

Perhaps a combination of Square Enix’s art direction, BioWare’s storytelling, and Epic’s gameplay would work for you. Maybe you’d love Cliff Bleszinski, Hideo Kojima, and Tomonobu Itagaki to collaborate on a videogame. The possibilities are endless! So let’s play this game. Come up with a combination of three developers — companies or individual designers — that would make your dream team.

  1. I'd like John Carmack, Hideo Kojima and Cliff to make me a survival horror game. Awesome visuals with a solid engine (thanks John, great story (thanks Kojima) and over the top violence and gameplay (Thanks Cliff).

  2. If Ubisoft, Blackrock Studios (makers of Pure and Split/Second), and Team Ninja made a racing/stealth/action game I would str8up jizz in my pants lol.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong but the original "Big Three" is in Boston. By original I mean that by a media nickname. I can't think of anyone else that is recent.

  4. @ RPAD

    Holy Trinity thats the Holy Trinity, "they" are bigger than the big three lol.

  5. @topic

    Miyamoto, Kojima, and Team Ninja.

    @Finca San Jose

    It sounds pretty good. I'm a sucker for apples and cinnamon.

    @Mel Gibson

    a good example of how keeping it real goes wrong. I always threaten to hit my gf but i never do it because i love her too darn much. (yeah yeah i know)

    @RAW Mystery GM

    I'm still sticking with my choice of it still being Vince.

  6. @ Tokz

    There is nothing wrong with loving your lady, more men need to be able to love. I love lamp……..and my gf.

  7. @Big Blak

    dude, it's been forever since i seen that movie. I will look for it and watch it just so i can get the reference.

  8. @Smartguy: Yeah, myself and a couple of the guys from the old site started our own venture since the owner of the old site had pretty much lost interest in doing anything other than keeping the site active. Pretty much nothing has been posted over there since we left. It's actually a bit depressing considering how much work we put in over there, but when you've got more of an ownership mentality than the guy running the show you should probably start your own.

  9. "Kevin Butler" just left Sony to become the head of Activision Publishing. I guess that means Sony has to find a new fake spokesman for those funny ads.

  10. @Ray

    Positive vibes….positive vibes…*sends positive vibes in the West coast direction*

    @Topic

    I would love to see Valve, id Software, and me all work collaboratively on a game. Or for a power two just me and Valve or me and id Software. haha. I'm actually not too sure who I would pick for a big three. To mix it up a lot I would love to see id Software provide the game engine, Valve present the idea of a zombie/horror/survival/psychological thriller, and have Edgar Allen Poe write one hell of a creepy psychological storyline for that game. That's the best I could come up with right now.

    @Big three

    I would be inclined to agree with Big Blak, the original "big three" is in Boston.

    Yeah mark to marketing accounting is quite unbelievable. Just give control to the company and expect them to do the right thing and be honest. That's a pretty giant loophole to be able to work with.

  12. @ Nightshade;

    I liked the NCAA 11 review, but I liked "The U" screenshot and caption of WR #5 even more. I tip my hat to you, sir.

    @ Mr. Padilla;

    Good vibrations and the Funky Bunch sent your way. Hope it helps. I tried to get Mark, but he wasn't available.

    @ topic;

    I can't possibly come up with anything better than what the people that posted above me already said.

    -M

  13. @Iceman: Thanks! I know you're a Miami guy, but that was intended with ton of snark.

    I've never been much of a college football fan in real life, but I always pick up NCAA footbal every year. I play with ASU since it's local to me and they're not completely dreadful. I Enjoy the challenge of making them relevant.

    I hate playing sports games for review while using the best teams anyway since you don't really get a fair representation of the game's competitive balance. For instance, I used the D'Backs when I did my review of MLB 2K11 back at the old site because despite the fact I'm a Yankees fan, using them and their 97 team rating would have been unfair.

    However, when I play for fun, I always use my team, no matter how good or bad they are. I enjoy the process of trying to make bad teams good.

  14. @Nightshade386 The guy that created the Kevin Butler ads, Eric Hirshberg, went to Activision. I'm certain that the guy playing Kevin Butler, Jerry Lambert, will still appear in Sony ads.

  15. @Ray: The Kotaku article I read made it seem like they were one and the same.

  16. Hbo has made me sad by showing the joe louis documentary again.

    Thanks a lot for the downer hbo :(

  17. Rainbow Six Vegas just made me pretty mad. Apparently when you beat the game on Realistic difficulty, and you die, it resets the difficulty to Normal (yet is somehow on Realistic difficulty for the rest of the game) and you then can't get the 100G achievement. Needless to say I'm pretty pissed at Ubisoft right now.

  18. Storytelling of Naughty Dog.
    Graphics of Naughty Dog.
    Game play of Naughty Dog.

  19. @thundercracker

    LOL, that is a good one. I also look forward to the unfortunate case breakage of black friday ads this year.

  20. wow! good deal on Bayonetta right now on Amazon for PS3 only. $19.99. (insert link here)
