Things I Missed While in Asia: MacBooks and Pokemon

There were so many excellent things I didn’t get to write about while I was in Asia. The two biggest — at least, that I can recall — were Apple refreshing its MacBook Pro line and Nintendo announcing Pokemon Black/White.

As for the new MacBook Pros, the 15- and 17-inch models get some excellent Intel i5 and i7 processors, while all models get new Nvidia graphics chips. Sadly, the 13-inch model doesn’t get any i5 love. I suppose that just makes my decision easier though. Ha!

The new Pokemon games promise to be the biggest leap the series has taken in a long, long time. From what I’ve seen and read, the differences should be plentiful, but the core gameplay will remain. Considering that this is one of my favorite series of all time, I’m super excited for this.

Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what you thought the biggest news was while I was hopping around Asia.

  1. Vince moving Smackdown to Syfy! NXT has not been confirmed to be cancelled or moving to another station.

  2. But I've been wondering, will they get in trouble for the new names? Capcom got in trouble for having African zombies in Africa (go figure right?), so will they get in trouble with the new names? There are just to many people in this world looking to cause trouble for this not to come up IMO.

  3. Lol I don't know pick one of the random 300+ posts from Coffee talk 124.

    I think its football related.

If you're trying to figure out who bought the complete discography of an obscure DC punk band through your Amazon links…

It shouldn't be that much of a hair puller.

  5. I thought the Pokemon Black/White news was pretty big, but I also found this story to be interesting as well

I also found it pretty ironic that I have read a lot of articles recently on this same subject line, considering Apple is the same one who used the 1984 theme for arguably the greatest commercial of all time.

  6. oh and the 14 year old Russian kid who killed his dad with a sledgehammer because his parents tried to make him stop playing his computer game so he could go to bed…how could I forget.

  7. I bought the Creatine.

I might hold out for a 13inch with an i5. Might have to get the 15 though

  8. @smartguy I love the form factor and battery life of the 13, but if I want to do any kind of editing, the i5 would be sweet.

@N8R, @Sandrock323 Thanks for those purchases!!!

I'm not sure if they will actually ship the movie though. They've done that before with other Love Hina products I've bought through them. I still get free shipping on the mini USB cable though :P

my core 2 duo 13inch handles everything I throw at it so far. Gonna be hard for me to get a larger notebook. I think the i5 will make it in that form factor soon enough.

I plan on upgrading again in February of 2011. My current unibody is fine. I even put 2 extra gigs of DDR3 in it. I just like having new gadgets.

I have been saying for a while that I plan on buying a new MacBook the day or week of D3 launching.

I think since the 13 unibody is a pro model now that the processor upgrade is coming as soon as they can cram that Nvidia 330 in one as well.

  12. You also missed the official announcement Cliffy dropped about Gears of War 3 coming next year.

  13. While I personally will never understand the Pokemon phenomenon, there is no doubt that Pokemon games sell like the proverbial hotcakes. And while I don't believe I've ever bought any of those either, I'm told they sell quite well.

  14. @Iceman

Did you think that Fenix looked stupid with the sleeveless Cog suit? I did.

  15. out of curiosity I was looking up prices on the new macbooks and WOW the 15 inch ones are so damn expensive now. They are $1800!! They were $1500 when I bought my 13inch unibody. Are the i5 and i7 chips that expensive???

  16. @ Smartguy

It might be that and that they come with more RAM stock than our Macs did.

You know how Apple wants you to use the expensive RAM, right?

  17. @ Smartguy;

Eh, In all honesty, I've always thought the "tank suits" looked stupid. N8 mentions how the players move so slow and it's true. The bulky character models seem to move like leg-less hippos in a pool of molasses. But to answer your question, (even though I didn't give it much thought upon first seeing the video) I don't think that Marcus can pull off the sleeveless look like Cole or Dom… well, Cole, anyway.

I've never cared for the paper-thin story either, although I would like to know the conclusion since the story left off on sort of a cliff-hanger at the end of GoW2. Even though I know I'm probably going to be disappointed on that end, I'll still buy the game and play it because I think it's fun to play. Also, it's one of the few shooters I can play with my wife. The fact that she'll be able to play as a female COG in the next game is just icing on the cake. I hope that their new character models have pros and cons and not just a minor graphical change. That would help mix things up a bit.

Yeah. I went to crucial.com and bought ram from them…or rather it was a bday gift. 4gigs cost me 60. Good deal on DDR3

I noticed the Video cards changed too. That could have been part of the price bump. I really like getting a new Apple product though.

  19. @iceman

I forgot about the female in the clip. Interesting. i really hope she is a lesbo. Fits with machoness.

Personally I don't mind the story in Gears. It's like an over the top action movie. It gives me exactly what I want. Violence, cussing, and cheesy jokes.

  20. @smartguy The new graphics chips definitely add to the price. They really up the performance while extending battery life. One caveat though: the graphics aren't currently switchable under Windows 7.
