Coffee Talk #123: Pick Your Japanese Limited Edition Console

Yesterday’s Coffee Talk was pretty fun, so let’s stick with the Japanese theme. It’s applicable since I’m typing this from Japan. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been jealous of the awesome limited edition consoles Japanese gamers have access to. There’s some truly amazing stuff released in Japan and I wish the American console companies would try to match these fine goods (though I understand why they don’t).

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been jealous of the awesome limited edition consoles Japanese gamers have access to. There’s some truly amazing stuff released in Japan and I wish the American console companies would try to match these fine goods (though I understand why they don’t).

I’m currently drooling over the white FFXIII PS3 with a pink Lightning paint job. It’s completely awesome and I want it now! If I can afford it and it’s still available during TGS, I’ll try to pick one up in September — that’s one of my dreams for 2010. You see, I’ve never had a Japanese limited edition home console. However, I have picked up a few limited edition portable systems at Tokyo’s Pokemon Center. I fondly remember my Celebi Game Boy Advance and my Torchic Game Boy Advance SP.

Today I wanted to see if you have a limited edition dream console. It doesn’t matter if it’s a portable or home system. I just want to know what Japanese limited edition goods make you drool. Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

    I agree Desmond has the best Lost episodes. They're always important and give you the most information, which is probably why he's important.

    Eh, that video was okay funny. I don't really think that N8r, smartguy, and i are that annoying with our Lost talk. Also, i don't force people to talk about Lost with me. I already know who i can and can't talk Lost with with my friends but most of us are lost fans.

    I saw that a while ago. I agree with tokz mostly. I actually find it next to impossible to talk about Lost with folks who have never seen it.

    The only relative thing to that that frustrates me, are people who have only seen the first 2 or 3 seasons and are SURE they got the whole thing figured out… and I don't want to spoil anything for them later.

    is anyone else having problems viewing the site???

    It's very basic for me, like it loaded only the bare essentials, and it is very hard to navigate right now.

    I always (and kind of still) wanted the pikachu DS lite. It was all yellow and was only available in very limited amounts at the Japanese pokecenters. That and there was a Game Boy Advance SP Zelda edition signed by shigeru miyamoto. Pure awesomeness!

  9. checked out the iPad last night, I've got to say I'm impressed. My brother bought one and he's getting Sprint 4G with their mobile hotspot. I think that would be an excellent solution not to have to pay for the 3G version of the iPad with crappy AT&T service. Best part is the Mobile hostspot would boost my iPhone data to 4G as well.

    @Rpad – a lot of analysts are really impressed with how the iPad handles comic books. while their not really my thing, what is your opinion on that?

    @thunder – I haven't really watched lost or been cornered by anyone who does, but I thought the video was good. I usually like all Onion videos though.

    @topic – I'm not really in to special edition consoles, I refused to buy a gamecube until they came out with the silver one in the US though.. purple just didn't do it for me

    Yeah I switched to chrome and it worked, but firefox looks like it's only loading a basic html version or something instead of loading the entire page.

    And I have seen them sold online at different times, but they are really expensive.

    It seems like it could just be a firefox issue or something, unless someone is running everything fine on firefox, but it was weird to see everything load differently in firefox.

  13. Being on the east coast let me start this one off early. Honestly I’m not that up to date with JLECs (yep just made that up cuz I’m lazy) but I do remember a soft blue-steel (or chrome) PS2 that I wanted so bad.

  15. Honestly, I’m fine with the generic color / model released here in the US. Goes well with all of my other electronics.

    I’m probably in the minority though. A few years ago I even decided against buying a certain laptop because it had graphics on the lid.

    Im with you on that. I prefer a solid color as well but some of the JLEC graphics are very ascetically pleasing.

  18. I would absoloutely (sp?) get the PS3 and i don’t love FF series as much as you do Rpad. you should definitely get it if you can afford it hands down. My mind is drawing a blank on JLECs (thx Big Blak) i’m going to google this and get back to everyone.

  23. I like generic looking consoles….for a while, then I end up buying skins for everything. Decal Girl makes some damn good skins. Got my PS3 & PSP matching skins there.

  24. upon further review, i tell you what i don’t want. Hello Kitty ones, didn’t realize they would’ve had that many consoles with Hello Kitty. Well the silver PS3 would’ve been kool but i’m not sure if that was real but it could’ve been since it was in the Reset videos Rpad posted. As for DS ones i’m happy with my Zelda one but i would get the FF Revenant wings one.

    Yeah that’s what I’m gonna do with Lost too. I watched the first two or three seasons on tv, but stopped watching almost all my tv shows when I moved to college, so when it all goes to dvd my fiance and I will probably watch the whole thing.

    The law was shot down by 2 other courts. The last time that happened with a case i followed (a county lawsuit trying to shoot medicinal marijuana), the Supreme Court wouldn't hear the case. State courts triumphed.

  37. Yeah, but that's the thing. I get more upset at these people who waste taxpayer money to fight something that the friggin' courts have already said was "free speech" more than the attack on the video games themselves.

  42. Honestly, the thing I like best that I heard is that I can accidentally click on an ad in a free app and not leave the app I was in.

    I hate that… and it's something I wouldn't have thought of off the top of my head that I'd like them to change.

    Jobs says we only have time hear about 7 of the features today.

  61. That pandora in the background is going to eat battery no matter what. If I use Pandora while I am at the gym (like an hour) my battery feels the burn as well. Streaming over 3G eats it.

    3G overall kills everything. I don’t use my iphone at work only to check e-mail and text and i’m down to 52% already.

  64. I only use Pandora on my Iphone. I like to listen to Paganini violin concertos when I study.

  65. I like the folders idea. The multitasking I’m kinda bleh on so far. Never been a real gripe of mine. Hopefully new hardware seals the deal.

    Yes! Apple announced folders you can use to organize apps.

    I think the iPad is the best eReader on the market though. It’s backlit.

    I don’t like reading on my iphone for long periods of time and i prefer having a hard copy just in case, i ever lose my iphone. If i was only to get the digital comics and not have the real ones what would i do?

  75. I’m really not impressed with this 7 tentpole feature. Running Meebo in the background seems to be the same as push unless Meebo would load quicker this way (IM client).

    Not interested necessarily in the new features previewed. Folders is neat, but nothing grand.

    N900 gets closer to me now.

    yeah no multi-tasking for 3G models or previous iphones. You’ll get every feature but that.

  79. i listen to the radio on my hero at work prolly like 4 hours a night, but i use slacker radio, its much better than pandora (my opinion)

    you have to “advanced task killer” downloaded to your phone, its a must. When i close a program, most times it isnt really closed. I run atk whenever i close a program, HUGE battery saver.

  80. How are they gonna wet my whistle with the thought of multitasking and then wait until the end to say “Oh, and one more thing… not you N8R, you supported us too early on.”

    Truthfully, I’m with Smartguy about multitasking not being a huge deal for me… but it would have been nice.

    I have something like that for my jb iphone but 3G is just a big battery drain! I can mulitask with it but i’d rather have an apple multi-task program. I’ll bet more battery life since it will no longer be a jb app but an apple feature.

    Yes it is, I actually like Last FM better. For some reason the music it selects is right up my alley and not mainstream whereas Pandora plays more mainstream music from experiences with it.

    Yeah i agree with you on that and it’s in html5. Finally, we kept hearing about it coming and it’s here. now we need more sites to support html5 over flash or offer both and we can browse almost worry free on mobile safari

    @tokz_21 Dude, Hello Kitty is huge in Asia. San Rio in general is tremendous in Japan. Funny story: in Thailand they used to punish corrupt cops by making them wear a Hello Kitty badge on their arm.

    @Shockwave562 I don’t like digital comics yet. It’s just too foreign to me and doesn’t work for the way I like to read them. I flip back a lot to look at certain phrases or to see if I missed something in the background of a panel. It’s much easier to do manually…or as Reona Rewis says, with “my hands”.

    @RRODisHere Cole is playing a stupid character on NXT. It’s hilarious to hear him bash Danielson, as if Cole has accomplished more in the business. He also shouldn’t be calling anyone a geek or a tool.

    to answer your question, id love it, but i cant see myself dropping the 6 or 7 hundred bucks to get it off contract..but yeah i really want it

    try slacker radio, you can go to slackerradio.com and from there you can create custom stations….so on my channel, you might hear pink floyd, followed by old metallica, followed by phil collins, followed by a life once lost, followed by wu tang clan
