Coffee Talk #119: Thanks for the Memories! Off to Cambridge!

Well, after six months of running RPad.tv, I’m going to have to scale it back. I wanted to thank everyone for all their support! I’ll still update the site, but it’s going to be less frequent because…I’ve accepted a new job at the M.I.T.!!! I’m going to be teaching a class on videogame criticism at this most venerable institution starting in September 2010. Naturally, I have to move, prepare my course, find my TAs, etc.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the site’s new logo, Bobby Kotick buying a kitten, and Steve Jobs admitting the iPad was just an elaborate joke, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Oddly enough, this site was a big part of how I got the job. So thanks for commenting and making it fun/awesome!!!

Update April 2: Yes, this was an April Fools’ Day post.

  1. @n8r

i know what real salsa tastes like everytime i go home. My mom makes the best salsa. I was just going with Rpad's new logo.

Would a power tie be like a power ring? I wonder what color Rpad would choose?

  2. @ tokz

If R Pad were a Planeteer, I'd say his power ring would be wind because I'm not cold-blooded enough to say he would sport the heart ring.

  3. @n8r

Ha! i was thinking more like GL power rings but Capt Planet works too. I think Heart was the best of all the powers. He can use it for Jedi Mind tricks.

  4. That is so awesome!! Congratulations to the N'th degree!! If you ever need a T.A. to help with research anything I will go to MIT to help out, lol. I am extremely jealous of the students that get to have you in class, is it too late to transfer to MIT? haha

I'm glad to be able to say that I was a part of all of this and glad to do anything that I could to help out. I'm definitely going to miss frequent updates on this site, but I will stay around here for sure!

You should open up a thread somewhere where we could just post whatever…kind of like coffee talk, but more of a long term thread also if you don't think you will be able to update those as often.

  5. @Tokz_21

I couldn't even make it through the whole thing, it was just disturbing to me.

  6. @bsukenyan

Oh i couldn't either, this was totally annoying but ign always has good movie trailers for april fool's jokes. They had a Thundercats one with clips of Vin Diesel from his Riddick role and Brad Pitt from his Troy role. The Legend of Zelda one was good too. It made me realize I would really love to see a movie but then again it might suck like the trailer made it seem.

  7. @tokz_21 I'm Filipino. My people love shoes. I couldn't be part of the Indigo Tribe just for that reason…though Indigo-1 is kind of hot.

@Iceman Excellent post. That cracked me up.

  8. Bah firmware 3.21 is already available for psn. I don't feel like getting online to play anymore.

  9. @rpad

I just figured that you would want some kind of sugar mama plus do you really need to get along to do the horizontal mambo.

  10. Where can i apply to be your T.A. I can actually imagine living in Boston! or near it because it’s not technically in Boston!

I love Salsa! believe it or not i think the tosito’s has a pretty good one and it goes perfect with their scoops brand tortilla chips.

  11. @ tokz

If you think Tostitos makes the best salsa, you’ve been living in the north way too long. You know how pizza and Italian food starts to get wretched after you travel too far west or south? Well, Mexican food gets pretty bad once you get too far north or east. That’s a fact.

    @ R Pad

I’ll just be happy to help design your power ties.

  12. @rpad
You know for some reason i thought it would’ve been indigo just because you didn’t understand them and wanted to! Blue is a shade of indigo, right? I get partial credit no? I didn’t catch that, unfortunately that was during my hiatus because i had to actually do work with the secretary being out. I was without rpad.tv for 2 months!

  13. Damn you, Mr. Padilla!

I applied for the Professor of Interactive Media Criticism opening at MIT, too. I can’t believe they picked you over me! That’s outrageous! You haven’t posted an in-depth video game critique in months, whereas I bitch about games that came out two years ago every day to my mom. That makes me way more qualified.

Oh, this is so B.S! I’m going to get on the phone with Vice Provost McGilacutty right now and give him a piece of my mind! Don’t pack your bags yet, sir. After I’m done with that guy, I’ll make sure they think twice before hiring someone who can’t even recite the opening scene of Spyro the Dragon in Russian.

  14. @rpad
oh by the way, Carol Ferris of the Violet Corps was way hotter than Indigo-1.

  15. The only person who I could see that would bust their ass to get in to M.I.T. and all of a sudden say "I wanna be a videogame critic instead of what I came here for"… is Val Kilmer's character from the movie Real Genius.

  16. @smartguy Good luck. Aren't most CPAs a little crazy?

@N8R Was it a dream where you were on top of an ancient Egyptian pyramid dressed in sun-god robes with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing pickles at you?

  17. @ RPAD

(Schwarzenegger) You SOB!!!!!!! Oh man dude that was effin great!!! I was ready to call you PROFPAD LMAO! Wow that was a great prank man. I have to get my gfs camera tonight and Ill send you then later today. Lol that was great man!

  18. @ Ray

If you would have said this any other day besides yesterday… I would have bought it. But since yo said it yesterday, my brain immediately said “class on videogame criticism??? at M.I.T.???”

So it wasn’t that I didn’t believe you could do it since I really don’t know exactly what degrees and credentials you have, it’s that I didn’t believe that class would exist at M.I.T.

Remind me never to piss you off, this was good.

  19. One hour til my interview with a CPA firm this morning. I pray the firm isn’t full of lunatics. I couldn’t find out any preliminary info on them before hand.

  20. @Ray
You should have used F.I.T. (Florida Institute of Technology). My girlfriend went there and they had some courses similar to what you had said. Plus it is in Melbourne, Florida.

  21. @ Tokz

I think Cambridge is technically part of Boston. It is located in the Greater Boston area, which is composed of a bunch of small cities like Alston, Brighton, East Boston, Dorchester, Roxbury, blah blah blah. To us Bostonians when we hear Boston we think of Downtown Boston, which has the Theater, Financial , and some other districts. I THINK lol.

  22. @Big Blak
I kind of figured that. In Chicago we would’ve called that a suburb just because it’s not in Chicago city limits. I remember passing through there when I was Boston last year.

  23. @Rpad – I think it would have been a good prank if you said the site was over. Taking a job and scaling back the site almost seems too realistic, even if it is video game criticism at MIT
