Coffee Talk #114: Your Dream Videogame Team-Up

In the spirit of the old Marvel Team-Up comics, I want to ask you about the videogame team-up of your dreams. There are so many wonderfully talented developers in Asia, Europe, and North America. Maybe you’d like them to collaborate? Or maybe there are characters from different publishers that you’d like to see in the same game? Whatever the case, I want to know what you’re thinking (pure energy).

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, American Idol getting it right last night, why the hell Roy Jones, Jr. is still boxing, or everyone swooning over the HTC Evo 4G even though it won’t be out until the end of the summer, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

As for me, I’d love to see BioWare and Square Enix get together. (It’s not going to happen, but it’s my silly dream so I’m just going to go with it.) I would love a game that combined the gameplay mechanics of Baldur’s Gate or Dragon Age with the art of Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts. A game like that would totally own me.

Now let me know about your videogame team-ups! Perhaps you want a cooperative game with Kratos and Mario? Or maybe Warren Spector designing a game with Tetsuya Nomura directing the art? Dream big people (please)!

  1. Ooooh i'm going to need some time with this topic.

    @R Jones Jr

    I hope Hopkins knocks him out but i know that won't happen because Hopkins doesn't want to do that to Jones, he's trying to give him one more big pay day before he calls it a career.

  2. I am a sucker for Stealth games, so Sam Fisher and Snake would be an awesome duo. Or the Ninja Turtles in a Soul Calibur game would be funny to see.

    Speaking of stealth games I have always wanted a stealth game about ninjas and I can't believe that there hasn't been one yet. And I swear on everything that is sacred, if someone brings up Tenchu I will….. Well I can't think of anything I could do over the internet, but let's just say I won't be happy.

  3. @ thundercracker

    I wish IW would make a theater mode like Halo has, Just because Its always nice to have proof of something when you do it.

  4. mine's not so outrageous or unbelievable but I would love to see Bioware and Star Wars team up for a true KotOR sequel….

    Also I think if Nintendo and Bethesda hooked up they could make an awesome Zelda game

  5. In my opinion Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica are in leagues of their own and a collaboration from them would be monumental.

    Realistically, I'd like to see Sony Santa Monica make Heavenly Sword 2.

  6. @RROD – I think the new OT rules are good. Something like 60% of teams who win the toss win the game, that is unacceptable if you ask me.

    However, I'd like to see these rules added to the regular season at the owner's meeting in May

  7. haha, on that note I did find it interesting that New Orleans and Minnesota were 2 of 4 teams that voted against it. I can understand NO but Minnesota? Weird…

  8. @RROD

    Those are the most complicated OT rules ever. They should've just adopted the NCAA ones even if it is for the playoffs only; The owners made this more complicated than it should've been.

  9. @Shockwave

    I don't like them. I see you point but the game should be won in regulation. If you don't want the other team to win the coin toss and kick a field goal then beat them in 60 minutes. I don't understand why it's a problem in the playoffs and not the regular season but that's just me.

    @tokz

    It wouldn't surprise me if the NFL adopt the only one foot in reception rule like in college.

  10. @RROD, there's probably a better way to go about it, I don't think college rules are necessarily the right way to do it either. but this is at least a step in the right direction. This way, if a field goal happens at least the other team has a shot. I do think this rule is useless if they don't do it in the regular season though. That could change in 2 months

  11. @RROD

    I wonder if they regret giving the "ok" there were a lot of games and drives that could've ended differently if receivers weren't pushed out.

  12. The new OT rules suck. Defense is part of the game. If you can't stop the other team, you don't deserve to win. Where was this grand outcry for a rules change outside of the 3 of the regular guys on Around the Horn? If you're really that upset that a field goal might win you a game roughly 2 minutes into OT, but not concerned that it would have won you the game in the last seconds of regulation…..I just don't get that line of thinking.

  13. you people and saying the coin toss in unfair? It's fair enough to start the beginning of the game. Just because you kick to begin with doesn't guarantee you will get it back in the second half. The rule was fine the way it was.

    My team won an OT game this year after they lost the toss. It happens. The better percentage to look at would be how often the winner of the toss scores on the opening drive. Defense is paid to stop Offense. Special teams are paid to return kicks and make kicks. This new rule very much diminishes 2/3 of the game.

    Talking heads were upset that Sproles owned the Cots D a few years ago and Manning could only watch. This year it was the fact that Favre had his team in position to win at the end but threw a pick. Ridiculous.

    Best overtime rule they could institute in my opinion…just turn it into a 5th quarter/period. If you had the ball, you get it where you had it. If you score, you score and you win. Done. I'm not in favor of adopting NCAA rules either. Those are pretty much like the rules of little league…no losers and everyone gets a turn. Sudden Death is the best format.

  14. I think Smartguy hit the nail on the head. The NFL don't ever want to see Peyton Manning helplessly on the sideline in overtime again. That's the main reason for these changes I believe.

  15. @ topic;

    I'd like to see Iceman (Bobby Drake) team up with some random bad-ass in an FPS. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like it could work, but my fanboyisim for Iceman never represented itself to be logical.

    @ Overtime rules:

    I agree with Smartguy's rules. Have a 5th quarter. I don't particularly like the NCAA's OT rules and the new overtime rules for the NFL just made my head spin. When will people learn that keeping things simple is usually the best way to go.

    @ Sandrock;

    I think that was Buddha’s vision for world peace as well.

    -M

  16. @NFL

    I think that the rules weren't that great in the first place. Yeah the rules that RROD posted for us do seem complicated and I don't think that it needs to be that complicated…I have always liked more of the college approach to OT, where both teams get opportunities to score again. With what Smartguy said about the coin toss being fair at the start, I would agree that it is fair, because during the game the other team will have a chance to have offensive possession of the ball. Like Smartguy also said though, the different teams are paid to do their jobs. As a colts fan I know that Manning being on the sideline is not the strongest point, and as a fan I never like to see it happen where I know that my team could have done better in slightly different circumstances…but that's football and I don't really think that the rules needed to be changed.

    @sandrock

    I would play that game a few times. I am terrible at SSB games, but cross platform characters fighting each other would be epic.

  17. For some reason I would love to see the Mario Bros in the L4D universe lol.

    As for that boxer with the Jr at the end of his name, he needs to just stop, period. Hes like Johnny Ruiz (which happens to be from my home town) a washed up, overrated, self inflated douche bag.

  18. Hmmm….id software and anyone else who does fps games sounds good to me. I always thought that the character from Doom and BJ Blaskowitz would kick some serious ass (I try to not really go fanboy for anything/anyone except id software…I can’t help it!).

    I think that a hardcore developer with a casual game developer could be an interesting mix up…PopCap game maybe?? with…I’m not sure who…

  19. Id love to see mediamolecule hook up with infinity ward

    customizable mw2 engine ftw

  20. @NFL

    How do you guys feel about the new overtime rules? For those that don’t know the new rules are:

    -If the receiving team kicks a field goal then the other team will get the ball and have a chance to score. If other team scores a field goal too then the game goes on but if the other team scores a TD while the other team only kicked a field goal then the team that score the TD wins.
    -If the receiving team scores a TD then the game is over.
    -If the receiving team runs the kickoff back then the game is over.

    My head hurts.

    Also, from now on when a player losses his helmet the play will be stopped and rule dead.

  21. @shockwave
    I can deal with ties in the regular season but in the playoffs you can’t go sudden death with a high percentage rate of 60% win if your team guesses the coin toss. Tails never fails btw.

  22. Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony should make a Super Smash Bros. that has all of their main characters. Throw in free cross platform play and I’m sold. Kratos vs Master Chief, Samus vs Drake, Battle Toads vs Mario! The world will implode with awesomeness into one super being that will end world hunger and bring everlasting peace and happiness to the world!

  23. Old Snake+Ezio Auditore=glorious ninja madness

    It’d just be freakin amazing to have a ninja game where you can run about like Ezio and you have all manner of deadly stabby things, but you can also crawl around and use Octocamo and snipe. Maybe tranq guns too.

  24. I'd love to see what a Marvel Team-Up between Tim Shafer and Sucker Punch would yield. Just gave myself a mini-boner.
