BioWare has developed several outstanding games that use traditional fantasy and sci-fi settings. It even took gamers on a mystical adventure in ancient China (Jade Empire). The company has considered other backgrounds, but one you won’t be seeing any time soon is horror (or as it’s known these days, vampiric romantic teen angst). BioWare’s Dr. Greg Zeschuk recently told me:
Years ago we talked about horror as a genre setting. We just didn’t feel like it really worked for us. It’s funny how crazy that’s going — the vampire stuff.
I’m mostly relieved, but a little disappointed. I was never into vampires and the Twilight phenomenon currently has me hating the bloodsuckers. If there’s one company that could get me interested in vampires, it’s BioWare. So while I’m glad it appears to be sticking to its bread and butter, I’m curious about what BioWare could do with a vampire game.
Are you happy or disappointed that BioWare isn’t going all Twilight?
I don't really know much about twilight. but I also don't think vampires are strictly horror, they could be included in any fantasy setting really, such as Dragon Age.
I love my wife, but she's totally into the whole vampire thing thanks to Twilight. I mean, she's even DL'ing the worst kind of romance novel vampire trite on Kindle that she can find. If she ends up LARPing next, we're going to have to have an intervention.
I'm glad that they decided against the twilight phenomenon (sp?)
I like vampires but i'm not a fan of this series. Anne Rice and True Blood are good ones for me.
@Nightshade
Make her get into Bram Stoker or Anne Rice. At least those don't sparkle.
@Nightshade
I feel sorry for you. I'm blessed that mine doesn't care for it.
@Smartguy: She knows better than to make me partake. She'll go to the movies with her friends, but she won't subject me to it.
Robert Pattinson will always be Cedric Diggory to me.
@R-Pad
Holy flaming bird crap Batman! I didn't even notice that they were the same person.
@Sandrock323 Ha! I shall remember him that way. There are a few actors that will always be one character to me no matter what they do.
Bill Pullman = Lonestar
Lou Diamond Phillips = La Bamba
@rpad
Good call on LDP as Ritchie Valens. I'll remember him for that role too.
@ R Pad
Bite your tongue!
Th story of Ritchie Valens is incredible. The dude's career lasted only 7 months and he was 16 when he died. The guy was also light years ahead of any other rock 'n roller of the time. It really makes me wonder how much more latino influence would be in rock music today had his life and career not been cut so drastically short.
Meaning, referring to Ritchie Valens as a traditional song that was around long before he ever played it is almost insulting. I say almost, because the movie wasn't called "Donna".
@N8R That's not really the point. I love Ritchie Valens. What has Lou Diamond Philipps done? He did La Bamba and got beat up by his lesbian wife. That's about it. I suppose you could point to Stand and Deliver, but I call that movie La Bamba Goes to School.
@tokz_21 That would be La Bamba Rides a Horse.
LDP was awesome in The Big Hit. I love that movie.
@N8R Totally agreed on Mark Hamill, though geeks love him for The Joker too. He should be the patron saint of being attached to one role for your entire life.
Ritchie Valens was awesome. I do think he's overlooked because he died in the same plane as Buddy Holly. Holly was more popular and white, which is why I believe America remembers him first and foremost.
For the record, I associate LDP more with La Bamba than Ritchie Valens. I remember several Valens songs and his ahead-of-his-time tone.
@rpad
i remember LDP in one more role but i don't need a La Bamba one for this one. He was also a pedophile in a Law & Order SVU episode. I hadn't seen in a role for a long time and i was like WTF how old is he now?
@ R Pad
I also think more of Los Lobos when I think of La Bamba. It was a B-side for Ritchie.
Not only was Ritchie ahead of his time, but he was 16 years old! His career lasted 7 months (which back then seemed even shorter than it does today). He was so on top of it, that i guy like Buddy Holly said "Yeah, put that kid on tour with me". The kid wad incredible.
He might have been 17, I can't recall. Either way, there will never be another guy like that.
@n8r
Los Lobos sang all the songs for La Bamba movie & soundtrack. I rocked the hell out of that tape.
@n8r
yeah that was los lobos playing the traditional song that inspires Ritchie to play la bamba
Yeah see, I don't do the whole Twilight crap, and still don't care for it even after my best friend made me watch it cause she's bat shit crazy for it. But I do like vampire concepts. I love Castlevania in all it's forms (even tho there's no actual bloodsucking), Bram Stoker, and Anne Rice. I mighta LARP'd a little bit in college >_> but that's b/c we were taking a DnD break lol. But anyway, I'm a little disappointed Bioware won't touch vamps with a 10ft pole. Something really good "could" have come out of it. But I'm not going as far as to throw a fit – it's not worth it lol.
yeah ldp is always gonna be "chavez" for me
ed o neill is al bundy
mark paul gosselar is zack morris
adam sandler is the same douchebag in every movie
@Smartguy One of my favorite comments at the Interactive Achievement Awards was when Jay Mohr referred to him as "Shawn LeBeef" and asked, "Where the hell did he come from?"
@ray
can anyone get nto the IAA? can anyone get into dice? id like to go
@ Thundercracker;
If you feel that way about Adam Sandler, I can just imagine what you think about Rob Schneider… and Nicholas Cage… and Tyler Perry… and Keanu "Whoa" Reeves.
I'll stop now.
-M
@thundercracker IAA is invite only and DICE registration (which can be expensive) is up to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. In general, it's an industry event that's mostly for publishers and developers, with a wee bit of press allowed in.
@Smartguy: I saw a “B” movie at Lackluster the other day staring Robert Patinson, and I’m possitive they made him sparkle on the cover box just to try and lure in people like my wife.
@rpad
haha. La Bamba goes to school. what about LDP in Young Guns?
@ R Pad
Young Guns 1 & 2. Other than that, I see your point. I;m just a huge Ritchie Valens mark and there are alot of people who literally only know him as “the La Bamba guy”.
I always think of Luke Skywalker when I see Mark Hamill as well as Princess Leia whenever I see Carrie Fisher.
Karen Allen is Marion Ravenwood and Michael C. Hall is TOTALLY Dexter.
@ tokz
Yeah, I knew that. They had a top 40 hit with the title track though.
The song itself is a traditional song and has been around forever though.
@thundercracker
so is shia lebeouf.
James Gandolfini is Tony Soprano in everything now
If only Bioware could team up with White-Wolf studios (makers of the World of Darkness PnP). That would be a pure nerdgasm for me.
