Apple iPad Costs as Little as $229 to Build According to iSuppli

Market research firm iSuppli published a chart that revealed that the Apple iPad costs between $229.35 to $346.15 to make. The initial price of the device ranges from $499 to $829. Take a peak at this nifty chart.

If iSuppli’s numbers are accurate then Apple will be making a pretty penny off each iPad sold right out of the gate. Considering that none of its parts are bleeding edge, the estimates are totally believable.

  1. Direct materials plus direct labor plus manufacturing overhead would be nice. You'd have to own shares of AAPL for that info.

  2. Maybe an iPad would be worth it if I got one for production cost…of course if that were an option I think I would still prefer an itouch or iphone at cost.

  3. These kinds of price gouging that people line up to gobble up iphone ipad itouch ipod.I would think apple is making serious bank on all those.Yet people want to bitch about console prices which most of the time are sold below cost especially in the case of the ps3.The same people who say PSpgo is overpriced are carrying an iphone and waiting for ipad.

I agree however psp is overpriced so is iphone ipad etc.I assume apple is making plenty off apps/software as well.

My At&t contract has been up for a year or nearly a year. For a refurb 3g Iphone lockin for 2 years and 200.00 no thanx.Same for blackberry for that matter.I can understand others wanting them though i dont use the multimedia functions that often.

For now im happy not being obligated to any carrier.

  4. Every pizza you've ever had delivered cost roughly 69 cents to make.

A McDonalds cheeseburger costs about 3 cents to make.

A movie you rented for 5 days cost $20 bucks until 4 people rent it. We won't even get in to the cost of streaming online movies.

I can go on and on but the fact (and my point) is simple… that's American business. If you don't like it, move to China and see what you get.

  5. @N8R

I think iSupply is a not a very good measure of the cost of something being produced on a large scale. It doesn't take into effect economies of scale, economies of scope or proper costing methods that companies HAVE to use.

The only thing it is good for is seeing how much it would cost you to build a unit that can power on.

  6. @n8r Exactly where did you get your numbers? They are purely speculation and way off basefor the first two.My movies cost $10.00 a month netflix of course.

Your hostility sugests apple fanboy or anger management issues pms?

Before long China will have more freedom than americans do so i may consider your last option though.

  7. @Trikkey

They will never be free like Americans. Hell, if you send someone a lewd text message you can go to prison. No thanks.

  8. Mcdonalds sales have to pay for all their cooking supplies stores rent electricity etc i could go on but wont.

  9. @ Trikkey

I get my numbers from employees and former managers. Assuming they only sold cheeseburgers, they wouldn't make the cut.

This is Rpad.tv… I leave my fanboyism at the door.

I don't know where you got hostility from, but you definitely did a good job throwing it back.

  10. @ Smartguy I am ultimately referring to the little freedoms that have been taken away and will continue to be taken away.

For example seatbelts by law you have to wear them. Not a matter of choice. Why?Insurance companies dont want to pay your medical bills. When we end up with government health care Micky ds will end up selling mctofu government wants you thin and fit and not costing them money.

The china thing was just being a smartass. Now im off to get a double whopper while I can lol later.peace

  11. @ Trikkey

Dude… you can get these things way cheaper (even below cost, pirated, but below cost) in China.

In fact, since you are fluent in English, a University will hire you (or I) on the spot for that alone.

What's wrong with China? I got good friends I grew up with that moved there and love it.

The problem is, you assumed incorrectly. You thought you knew what I was saying… but you didn't. I can excuse the ignorance and arrogance I can forgive.

  12. The lady isnt ready so in closing I think apple makes great products. They are however overpriced.I am a proud american but i dont like seeing little freedoms slip away and nobody seems to notice or care.

So I am going to get in my car strap on the belt run some errands come home eat my whopper and play some braid.Smoke a cigarette "gasp" and enjoy.Though I do plan to quit too damn expensive these days and detrimental to my health of course.Do my part to save them some money as well of course.Peace

  13. @Trikkey

No pun intended, but a friend of mine who has smoked his whole life was diagnosed with Buerger's disease. Truly worse than Cancer I think.

  14. Not saying there is anything wrong with China for the moment though im happy where I am and i digress …………..

She is ready finalyy so I am going before she decides to changer her clothes or something

  15. @N8R

What's wrong with China? They have less choice and freedom than we do here. The fact that they monitor your communications and will penalize you for something "inappropriate" is appalling. I think the history and culture are fascinating, but I could not live there. Kind of like Vegas…nice place to visit, but don't want an address.

  16. whats on an angry whopper?

like barbecue sauce and onion rings?

    fish sticks and toothpaste?

    ice cream and mustard?

  17. i could SO live in japan, id love it, actually

    but never china

people who say " america is the greatest country in the world " blindly, who have no frame of reference, because they havent travelled, are hilarious

america is awesome, dont get me wrong…but to be honest, i think id rather live in australia, spain, italy, or austria..just off the top of my head

  18. and before someone says "well, why dont you move there?"

id say, if i didnt have a family that i would miss terribly, i would consider it

  19. @ Smartguy

Right, but as Trikkey pointed out, there are things here that can also have a finger pointed at them. It's really about lifestyle and choice.

However, China does treat it's American immigrants very well. It's part of my boy's visa that he has to earn the equivalent of $200 US a month… but they supply his house, his car, his food, his internet, furniture, tv, just about everything.

That $200 US is basically booze and hooker (which is legal) money.

  20. @Thundercracker

Australian government is steading passing legislation to filter the internet for their population. In other words aussie politicos are deciding what is inappropriate for you, a grown man, to look at. I think i'd take a pass on that place. I know America can be stifling in the free flow of info, but they aren't nearly as restrictive as other places.

Besides, Australia has those orange ants that can jump and paralyze you. Piss on that.

  21. @N8R

Having "them" supply everything I need is also appalling to me. I'm an adult, I will take care of myself. I don't need what they feel is adequate for me. Can't do it. I want to make my own way.

  22. yeah maybe you are right, australia is one of the places on my vacation bucket list

i cant say id like to live somewhere before ever having even visited, can i?

that was kind of foolish…but ive been to spain and italy and i can confirm that id love to live there, at least for awhile

  23. @Thundercracker

I've been to Norway and Austria for extended visits. Those countries are very nice. Switzerland was neat as well. Maybe being from southeast Louisiana has me jaded..but this is home. I love the culture, food, and people here. Other places are nice to visit, but no place has ever felt like home except here.

  24. No place will ever feel like home except your area (I presume).

I get misty looking at pictures of Pittsburgh and I constantly crave the food.

  25. i was born in italy, i dont really have roots here..i do know that whenever i went to italy to visit my family, by the time i came back i was dying for a snickers bar and a real cigarette

  26. if anyones ever seen the movie up in the air, ive got a little bit of george clooneys character in me, the backpacker spirit…i once met a guy from isreal who was working at the mall for the summer, when the summer was over, he was going to colorado, from there he didnt know where he was gonna go, but he always seemed to make out great just living with friends and working for brief periods of time..this dude had been all over the world, and it made me reconsider the way i lived my life

    sorry for the long story

  27. @ Thundercracker

Oh, I'm probably "a couple off".

Marlboro Lights changed the name? I wouldn't have noticed. My wife smokes reds though.

Be thankful cigarettes are as cheap as they are in VA. We gotta pay almost $6 a pack here in Cali (same in PA). I've had to switch to a brand called Palermo recently because they aren't so bad for as cheap as they are (they're made in Paraguay). I am however developing a taste for them.

  28. if wireless/GPS cost only about $30 I don't know why they even bothered with a non 3G iPad. I'd say the prices would be more fair if it were 400, 500 and 600, respectively.

  29. @shockwave

those numbers are bad to go by. that is what it would cost YOU to make it, not them.
