Coffee Talk #80: Lime Sorbet Games

Here’s a situation for you. Let’s say you’ve just played 40 or more hours of an intense role-playing game like Dragon Age: Origins or Mass Effect 2. Or maybe you’ve spent dozens of hours playing a great multiplayer shooter. You don’t want to jump right into the next great time suck. You need something to cleanse your palette. You need the lime sorbet equivalent of gaming. What do you play?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, natural sword enhancement, your application for the LA Clipper’s coaching job, or the greatness of Claudio Castagnoli, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

I was chatting about this with a respected colleague recently. After going through a heavy game experience, he likes to break things up with some mindless fun. He chose Jurassic: The Hunted as his lime sorbet game. I always go back to Civilization: Revolution for iPhone between intense games (though it’s something I do daily).

Today I wanted to see if you have a lime sorbet game. Is there something you play to clear your mind for your next great gaming experience? Is there a particular genre or style of game you use to cleanse your palette? Maybe a particular title? Leave a comment and let me know (please)!

  1. Hmm, very interesting coffee talk topic today. I guess it would be any sports title. Those really don't need that much thought for me. After a couple of hours of intense game playing, i just feel like playing FN: Round 4 or madden or Nhl.

  2. I tend to use something mindless that I can get lost in fairly easily. Recently, inbetween finishing my final playthroughs on ME1 and starting 2 I was playing Crackdown (couldn't stand the game at first, the movement/aiming killed me, and then I started collecting orbs… damn you collector items!). The next one like this I see coming down the pike is Just Cause 2. There is just something inherently exploitative to that game that is calling to me.

  3. I generally turn to anime, manga, and/or urrmmm….. to pass the time. However, I also play games when I have more time to kill, like L4D1/2, Rez HD, or MW2 to name a few. This coffee talk is funny because last night I was in said mood since I just finished Mass Effect 2 and didn't to devote myself to my second play through yet. I came to the conclusion that Bayonetta would be a good game to play since I still have it from Gamefly….. Needless to say I turned the difficulty all the way down as it was just to frustrating on normal.

  4. Hmm. This is an interesting topic…but I find myself going to a few different options, some of which I'm sure I won't think of right now. Usually there is some madden involved, but that usually doesn't work as being mild enough. I like to turn to internet games and computer games usually for this task. The original lemmings, a game called battle tanks, a couple popcap games. I love old freeware and shareware games a lot, so anytime I can play them is usually a relaxing and cleansing experience for me.

  5. a lot of times I'll break it up with some emulators, usually NES, or N64, I try to play Ocarina of Time and A Link to The Past at least once a year.

I don't need a huge delay, for instance, I went straight from Dragon Age in to Mass Effect. unfortunately, most really good games don't come out so close to one another so I get a lot of down time in between hot titles.

  6. no lime sorbet for me, just too many good games to finish…id like to go back to infamous and play evil after i finish dragon age, then maybe resume my fight night 4 career, try demons souls again…ac2 deserves another playthrough as well, but ive got heavy rain coming down the pipe too! then im gonna play god of war collection, then gow3

    so many games

  7. I'm actaully in a sorbet stage right now, having finished GTA4 and still wanting to finish to complete a lot of the side missions. Stunt jumps, flying rats, car deliveries, and police missions. As well as a second playthrough completed in under 30 hours.

Filler games are holding me so far, and finishing up some last acievements on some other games. Tapdefense on my itouch has been holding me over a lot and keeping me from geting burnt out on GTA4. Also playing co-op ultimate alliance with my roommates has been a huge dose of sorbet and really fun!!

  8. thank you raymond

well, im doing the urn of sacred ashes mission now…just finished orzamar and i hated every second of it. I suspect bioware is setting dragon age 2 up in the same way they set up mass effect. By that i mean that your actions in the first game will influence what happens in the second one.

i just have one question for you….can you make allistairs sister less of a bitch?, do you see her again after your first interaction in denerim? or can you not tell me cause of spollarz?

  9. Also, playing the board game clue, and playing cards with my roommates and friends is really good sorbet. I think anything co-op works for these purposes the best.

  10. @thundercracker Alistair's sister is like that no matter what you do. You can, however, change Alistair depending on how you handle the situation.

As for Shale, a romance is impossible on several levels. It isn't an option in the game. She's also made of rock and doesn't appear to have any orifices aside from a mouth.

  11. I'm semi in the middle of games, so right now I've been glued to LittleBigPlanet and Fat Princess as time fillers til I decide what I wanna be next in Dragon Age. Of course tho Heavy Rain's release is barreling down on us (YAY!) so I might put some GoW collection in as a filler too.

  12. @smartguy

pretty cool vid. It needed to show the Halas Trophy more.

It's my own personal bias as a Bears fan and he did a lot for football, some regard him as the founder of the NFL.

  13. i realize that shale wouldnt make an ideal lover, but i was just going for the comedy angle there, if that thing calls me "it" one more time, im gonna let the bisexual elf have his way with her

  14. @smartguy

great video, i especially like the part where pierre thomas was down at the 1 yard line :P

  15. @thundercracker

    coulda shoulda woulda lol.

Don't know if it would have been overturned though. One of those that stands how its called.

  16. I just finished Assassin's Creed 2 so I'm between games right now also. I'm playing MW2 online multi player a lot right now. I also played some of the new water levels in Little Big Planet. I wanted to play through Bioshock again before Bioshock 2 but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

  17. I generally break it up by switching genres. I’d have a hard time playing 2 oe 3 shooters in a row, so I’ll play an action title or a platformer if I can. Sometimes I’m limited to what Gamefly sends me though, and there’s nothing worse than getting 3 or 4 of the same genre game in a row.
