Were Your Surprised That Edge Won the WWE Royal Rumble?

As expected, WWE Superstar Edge made his return at yesterday’s Royal Rumble. While his return was rumored for weeks, a lot of dirt-sheet writers were surprised that he won. Most were expecting John Cena to win, while a lot of fans were pulling for Shawn Michaels. I was expecting a Cena victory (to put him in the main event in WrestleMania), but was hoping HBK would win to set up a match with The Undertaker. (To be honest, I knew Shawn wasn’t going to win since the writers have been pushing that angle too hard.)

At the end of the day, the WWE writers gave the Rumble victory to The Rated-R Superstar. This sets up all sorts of interesting matches. Which belt do you think Edge will go after? Who do you think his WrestleMania opponent will be? I’d love for Jericho to get one of the straps so that the two could have a grudge match at Mania. The mic work leading up to the fight would be awesome.

  1. Years ago, during his initial foray into the squared circle as a member of the Brood, I predicted that Edge was "money". I have not been wrong. Anytime they would like to hire me on as a talent scout, I'll accept their call.

  2. @LarcenousLaugh That's funny. I always thought Shawn Michaels was the lesser rocker. I backed the wrong horse on that one. Ha!

@tokz_21 SmackDown has had the better wrestling for well over a year. Morrison is the future.

  3. @rpad. That's funny you speak of morrison that way. I said that yesterday. His short time in th rumble was full of nice highlights even though he did miss that split legged moonsault.

  4. I was cheering for Edge to win, once i did hear that he was in the rumble. I’m glad to see that he won. My friend mentioned that he should go after the ECW strap but i’m like dude let it go. Edge & Christian have no reason to fight each other. Right now, i like your angle of Jericho winning the belt and facing off against Edge. Did you see that black eye Jericho was sporting? My friend was all like where did he get that black eye? I’m like hello! Remember the police escapade mid-week? I would really like to see edge go after the raw WWE belt. I miss Edge on RAW but he will most likely go after the Heavyweight one as my friend pointed out Smackdown’s lack of star power, even though Smackdown has been of my secret shows on Friday during Smallville commercials and after it. It’s highly underrated and it’s another show i get to see Jericho in, when he’s not crashing RAW.

  5. What do you guys think about TNA doing the McMahon/Shawn Micheals screwing Brett Hart deal with Hogan/AJ Styles screwing Kurt Angle at a time when the WWE opened the whole thing up again for a McMahon/Brett Hart match at Wrestlemania? Good idea or just plain tasteless and tacky?

  6. Nah see, my husband and I both expected Edge to win. According to my hubby, wrestling is too predictable (and most movies are too, he likes to pinpoint what's gonna happen….works every time) and he told me when he first heard about this match on the radio he knew Edge would take it. Cheating or not lol. B/c it seems like everytime a superstar takes a huge chunk of time off, they come back in swinging full force and winning. Almost. Every. Time.

But now I gotta ask, why are they putting Shawn Michaels in the losing corner so much? Is he preparing for retirement? I thought he was last year when he got dealt that blow to the eye twice in 2 weeks lol.

  7. And as for Morrison, I haven't liked him since they day he put on press-on gems in his ab lines. At least I think I remember that as him. *shrug*

  8. @Camikitten

True, that was predictable. And you're right, every time a main event superstar returns he is guaranteed to win the Royal Rumble. They did the same thing when Triple H and John Cena got hurt and returned to the Rumble.

I'm not sure if it is Hogan behind it. Natch has taken him under his wing but this storyline seems familiar. I know he did this with someone else but then turned on him because he wanted the spotlight like Natch always does. I think that thing about this Kurt being screwed over like Bret angle was when Hogan called Earl Hebner (the ref) in and asked him why he rang the bell early. Earl then explained himself saying that vince didn't screw bret, bret didn't screw bret, shawn didn't screw bret. Earl screwed bret and it was because he needed the money. I was like come on, you guys can't come up with a different angle?

  10. @ tokz

I was expecting Hulk to bring up the "evil twin ref" incident that cost him the belt against Andre the Giant (which he sold to Million Dollar Man) back in the day.

  11. @N8R

I forgot about that one. They should've gone with that one and actually brought Earl's brother Dave in for that one too.

  12. @Tokz_21Yeah, he totally botched Starship Pain. Still, that's one of the most impressive finishers in WWE. I love it and Evan Bourne's shooting star press.

@CamiKitten A-ha! That actually has more to do with Shawn's schedule. For the last few years he has taken summers off to spend time with his kids. He's one of the few WWE Superstars to work a limited schedule, but he absolutely deserves it.

  13. @rpad

Did you catch the confrontation with Bret and Vince. I didn't see the Batista angle coming but you figured if he wants to get in the Smackdown Elimination chamber that would be his way of doing it. I also didn't expect for Bret to be there in person. I thought it was going to be via satellite. I caught your tweet about being amazed with Edge's mic skills and i agree. I can't wait for the return of the cutting EDGE on Friday!

  14. @tokz_21Of course I did! Bret was scheduled to be there, if you keep up with the dirt sheets. I'm disappointed that Batista has been thrown into the angle. He sucks and is an embarrassment to Filipinos. The good news is that it might set up Bret/Cena vs. Vince/Batista at WrestleMania. I like that it would keep Cena and Batista away from the major belts.

  15. @tokz_21

They're definitely setting up a McMahon/Brett Hart match at Wrestlemania but I don't think it will have the impact that they want. Most fans now are too young to know about the Brett Hart screw job and won't care. It's good for nostalgia but all I see is two old men who are incapable of putting on a good match. Agreed on Edge's mic skills. I only wish he would learn to execute a proper spear. He does the worst spear in the business. Edge just runs up to his opponent and stop short and they both fall to the ground while Goldberg ran through people with his spear.

  16. @rpad

My friend that keeps up with the dirt sheets told me he was reading that it was going to be a satellite feed. Anyways, did you notice Batista was going to power bomb Bret but then remembered Bret's condition and decided just to pummel him. Your match idea appeals greatly to me just because i don't like Cena or Batista plus I always wondered how they were going to pull off a Bret Hart match with his physical limitations.

  17. @Raymond Padilla

Batista is Filipino? I didn't know that. I know Cena and Batista can't wrestle but they do have the credentials to be world champions. The mid level guys like CM Punk are the ones who need to be kept away from major titles. Sheamus is a breath of fresh air. Finally, some new talent that actually is world championship material instead of passing the belt around like candy to mid level guys like Jeff Hardy and CM Punk.

  18. @RRODisHere I doubt it would be one-on-one. Remember, Bret had a stroke and can't move around super well. And yes, Batista is half Filipino…though in his book he constantly refers to himself as "white".

Punk was money in the Rumble, btw. I love the Straight Edge Society and I hope the rumors of Bryan Danielson being the next member are true.

  19. @Raymond Padilla

I like CM Punk's Straight Edge Society gimmick to. He plays it well. I just disagree with giving him the world title. He's mid card level at best. When you back at world champs like Harley Race, King Kong Bundy, Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, The Macho Man, Ric Flair, Shawn Micheals, Diesel, Sid Vicious, Brett Hart, The Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, Kurt Angle, King Booker, John Cena, Edge, Chris Jericho, and Randy Orton, guys like CM Punk and Jeff Hardy are out of place with that company and don't belong. It makes the belt look like a joke. I would rather a worthy suitor carry the belt for years like Hogan did than to see it pass around to undeserving wrestlers.

  20. @RRODisHere You can argue about Punk, but I like him. Hardy is another matter. For a long stretch, he was the most over guy in the company. He had to get a major title at some point.

  21. @Raymond Padilla

I just miss the good old days of wrestling. Back then you had to be able to carry the company on your back to hold the world championship and title changes actually meant something. *Sigh* What happened?

  22. @RRODisHere Some of the champions you named didn't really carry much of anything. Diesel was a pretty horrible champion and held the belt when WCW was killing WWF in the ratings. As amazing as he is today, Shawn Michaels was also champion during a WWF down time. Diesel, Sid, and the Ultimate Warrior needed help in the ring during their title reigns. Recent champions like Undertaker and Batista are in the same boat.

Champions like Ric Flair — that delivered in the ring, on mic, at the gate, and in the ratings — are truly rare.

  23. @Raymond Padilla

Agreed on Ric Flair. He had it ALL, very rare indeed. I'm shocked that you think the Undertaker needs help in the ring. The Undertaker is the best wrestling big man in the business in my opinion. His "Old School" move alone proves that. I'd like to see any other big man walk the ropes like he does at his size and age. As far as when WCW was killing the WWF in ratings, you have to admit that the WWF wrestlers(Outsiders) invading WCW angle was ingenious and brilliant. That was the most exciting time in wrestling in my opinion but it was all short lived. I looked at WCW how I look at the Xbox and the WWF how I look at the PS3. You can buy up all the talent(games) from the other company all you want but in the end you will fail if you never develop your own talent(games).

  24. @RRODisHere 'Taker WAS the best big man in the business. His body is just a wreck now. The dude has problems walking these days. There's a reason why his ring entrance takes so long. His "normal" walk is very labored.

That reminds me. I saw Jerry Lynn after the RoH show last Friday. You can tell he's in a ton of pain as he walks.

  25. @Raymond Padilla

Well, a beat up body comes with the territory if you wrestle long enough. Have you seen TNA lately? Hogan and Mick Foley needs canes to get to the ring now. Kevin Nash also looks like his next step will be his last. Brian Knobbs of the Nasty Boyz looks like he's in worse shape than Foley. Scott Hall looks useless now. What's amazing is that Flair still looks like he's got another good match in him.

  26. @RRODisHere Oh definitely. It's a tough business, especially for big guys or guys that aren't in the best shape. I have mad respect for 'Taker, but he certainly isn't what he used to be.

I do think it's funny that TNA hired Waltman to take the bumps that his friends, Nash and Hall, can't.
