NPD Group has issued its console hardware sales data for December 2009. Capping off the year and the extremely lucrative holiday-shopping season, this is an extremely vital sales period. Let’s see how Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony performed.
- Wii: 3,810,000
- Nintendo DS: 3,310,000
- PlayStation 3: 1,360,000
- Xbox 360: 1,310,000
- PlayStation Portable: 654,700
- PlayStation 2: 333,200
Okay, tell me again how the Nintendo Wii is a fad? It has been whomping the competition for years and posted ridiculous numbers in December. Microsoft and Sony would kill for these “fad” numbers. As for those guys, both companies did well in December and should be proud of the numbers. In the pointless fanboy argument, the difference wasn’t really notable. Sony will have to hustle in 2010 to close the gap between the PS3 and Xbox 360.
What do you think of NPD’s December 2009 console sales figures? Any surprises? Any predictions for the new year?
I think Nintendo is buying back all their Wiis (or the majority anyways) in secret to keep their numbers up over the competition and say ha we are not a fad!!!
@ raymond Did you see the news on ostagar causing problems and bioware pulling it?
Man. I commented in the wrong post. @Trikkey I kind of like the Wii. It's not bad at all.
@ blakseed It has a few good games but the whole motion control for me is a pain in the ass.Could be im just lazy.Regardless of why I prefer a traditional controller.That being said I havent used my Wii in over a year I gave it a chance in the beginning but I am pretty closed minded about it now.Waiting on SMG2 and Zelda.Will get those until then its a dustbin.Unless i hack it.
Nobody's catching the Wii.
I'm beginning to feel like the last person on the face of the Earth who owns neither a Wii or a DS. I just look at these numbers and it boggles my mind.
the gap between second and third is now at 5.45 million
thats really the only race here, nintendo owned this console generation
@nightshade
i own neither a wii or ds as well, apparently we are the minority
I wish I had access to the data of how many third party games developed for the Wii actually sell. I wonder if they make more money on the Sony machine, 360, or Wii. Nintendo sells millions of these things every month (Wii) and I'm curious if anyone besides Nintendo makes money on it. I'm willing to bet not. Seeing as how good games haven't sold well on it. MadWorld, Deadly Creatures come to mind.
@Thunder: good to know I'm not alone.
@Smartguy There are some third-party successes like Tiger Woods, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and a few Sega titles.
@Nightshade & Thunder
I don't own either of the 2 also. I don't have a desire too.
@Slicky: That's exactly how I feel. Although….whenever they finally get around to releasing the next Zelda game, my wife may start getting on my case about getting a Wii…..
@Nightshade
I gave up on Zelda when I bought that P.O.S. Gamecube for Windwaker and then I was bored to tears traveling across the damned ocean all day.
There are great games on Wii and DS. If you have the dough, they're worth getting, especially the DS.
Windwaker was pretty fun. I do not care for the motion controls on twilight princess. Need to find a cheap GC version.
@Ray
Really?!? I see they have Build-A-Bear, Garden Mama, Sudoko, Dogz
Those are the kinds of titles I see when I think about a DS or even a Wii for that matter.
@SlickyFats You're looking at it wrong. The DS has a ton of hardcore games, particularly for fans of Japanese games and RPGs.
