Apple Tablet with 10.1-inch Display Coming in March for $1,000?

Apple Tablet 2

Ah, the old Apple tablet rumors…. The latest one comes from BoyGeniusReport, which claims that a financial analyst has pegged the product for a March 2010 release:

According to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner, Apple is almost ready to give its Chinese manufacturing partners the green light to begin mass production of the oft-rumored tablet that is believed to feature a 10.1? Multi-Touch capacitive display. If all goes well, Reiner believes that the tablet will be available as early as March provided Apple is able to stockpile enough units in order to minimize any potential shortages. So how many units are we talking? Based on an average retail price of $1,000, Reiner predicts Apple could sell as many as 1.5 million tablets in the first quarter.

Whenever Apple decides to unveil its tablet, you can be sure that millions of people will be in line to snatch one up. I want to know if you’re considering dropping $1,000 for an XXL iPod. It seems so expensive to me, but Apple has an unmatched way of getting people to fall in love with its products, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this expensive tablet was a huge success.

  1. probably not for me. my iphone and Macbook are about as portable as I'll ever need to be

  2. Apple is normally a bit expensive for my tastes. I love my iPhone, but I got that for cheap with a contract. While the tablet looks cool, I don't do anything in my normal life that would require me having one, and while I certainly didnt think I needed an iPhone when I bought one, I don't know how many more uses the tablet would garner for me.

I am sure it will sell millions of units though. Steve Jobs has found a way to crap solid gold bars that don't even smell like crap, so more power to him.

  3. @Rpad – I think the expensive part of the service is the data above all else. It seems silly to be paying almost as much for iPhone internet as it would cost for high speed at home. Such is the price of portable internet I suppose.

  4. @Larcenous & Rpad – Ya but to be fair I paid about $100 per month when I had verizon and I think I paid about 90 per month when I had sprint. The only thing that has changed now is that my phone is a lot cooler. I know Sprint and T-Mobile are cheaper but that comes at the cost of inferior phones and service.

  5. I'm sorry, but Chrome is looking to good at this point. I'd rather have a Chrome netbook than a tablet running a slower OS. That said, a tablet running on Chrome is an interesting idea. (couce I'm only interested in a internet PC

  6. @Shockwave562 Your info is outdated considering Sprint's and T-Mobile's new plans. As for inferior service, it depends where you live and if you travel. Nationally, AT&T's service is horrendous.

  7. @Rpad – Ya I definitely knew Sprint and T-mobile have come down in price and offer some good deals on "all-in-one" service plans. I think as far as coverage goes Spring has been my least favorite companies. I'd prefer the iPhone be on Verizon I just don't think I'll save any money when they do eventually get the iPhone

  8. @Sandrock – I don't know how an internet based OS is really viable just yet if you ask me.

Also, are you inferring that Mac OSX is slower than other OSs? because you would be very mistaken.

  9. @ R Pad

I have to pay for 2 phones whatever service I use, mine and the Mrs. When I was at T-Mobile, I paid the same that I'm paying no except my crap Motorola at the time was a phone I genuinely hated. My wife's phone was worse but she can put up with alot (hence why my marriage is still intact).

My in-laws (who live with us) have Verizon and struggle to get signal in our house AND pay more than us. So I raise the question, which is more important? Getting signal in your home, or while traveling?

Sure, it's a case by case basis, but most people are at home more than they are out and about. Single, unmarried people are in fact the minority here.

  10. @ Sandrock

Yeah, when I found out that Chrome OS was web based it shattered any hopes I may have had for it (personally).

For my wife though, it may be great. She doesn't have 1/10th of the data I have. I need a solid, reliable OS that is specific to me. OSX is my favorite so far. I keep trying to get my wife to install Ubuntu, but she's scared of it (n00b syndrome). She wants a Mac now after learning OSX from my computer.

P.S. That check came in, but it was half of what we expected. With Christmas upon us, I'm afraid I can't afford your Macbook (as much as I want it). I'm so sorry I led you on this long. If there's a way I can make it up to you, let me know.

  11. @ Sandrock

Sorry, that whole last post was for Shockwave.

    @ Shockwave

I meant that previous post @Sandrock to be directed at you.

  12. @N8R – no worries, my computing needs are pretty much set right now so I really don't have a reason to get rid of my notebook. I just wanted a new one. I know if I do get rid of my iMac though I'll miss it, even though I don't use it much.

  13. I don't really get the hype about the tablets, they are cool, and I have seen good uses for them. The problem is that all the uses are business related, not so much personal uses. My iPod touch just needs a good word processing app that I could easily transfer to MS word for printing and sending purposes. Oh, I guess I would want my itouch to become an iPhone on verizons network, lol.

  14. @Shockwave562

I was implying that both Windows and OSX are slower than Chrome.

    @N8R

I have a PC for power uses like gaming, so having a fast web based OS on a tablet or netbook is fine with me. I don't really intend to take it out of the house anyway.

  15. @Sandrock – hmmm, see I get where web based would be good but it defeats the purpose of getting a tablet if you leave it in the house. I think for the time being a Chrome based OS would be better suited for constant WiFi

  16. @Shockwave562

or 3g maybe. Constant internet is a plus for Chrome and from what I have seen, many netbooks come with broadband cards built in. I'm sure tablets could and would benefit from built in broadband cards as well.

    @topic

Now that I mention it, any one think they are trying to shop their tablet around to cell phone companies? I bet Verizon wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

  17. @Sandrock – ya maybe the Tablet would be better than iPhone for browsing.

Also I'm pretty sure they'll sell this via a carrier like other tablets. I bet Verizon picks it up so you can get the machine at a discounted rate with a contract

  18. @ Sandrock

Right on, I don't game much on the computer. In fact, the older I get, the lass I game at all. I use my Mac for more constructive things like graphics, making music, and editing video. For those things, the Mac software truly does pwn the PC counterparts/equivalents and never crash.

What I'm missing in your statement is 1) how is gaming gonna be better on Chrome than Windows, and 2) is Chrome even out for you to know first hand that it is indeed faster? Or is it speculation based on the hype?

Do you have experience with OSX or Ubuntu?

  19. @N8R – I think you brought up a good point, I doubt a skeleton machine that uses Chrome OS could really run a decent game. No HDD for one…

The speed thing is a good point. while the machine may be faster because it's not loading OS information you are still relying on a stable internet connection.

  20. @ Shockwave

Then there's the security factor. Every pro studio I know of makes sure that the computer the record the masters on is completely offline for a reason. Every year Ubuntu proves to be the most secure OS but the software and language ties alot of people up.

For what I (personally) do on the computer, OSX is for me. For gamers, I see no other option but Windows.

*Note: That last sentence is subject to change over time. For all I know, Apple and Linux could make a massive leap toward gamers in the future. However, I doubt MS will lighten up on their stranglehold that they have in that market.

  21. @N8R – which is exactly why all of my Mac machines run dual boot Windows and OSX via bootcamp. Best of both worlds, really.

Although I must admit my home machines haven't seen much Windows use in the last couple years. I don't really buy new games for PC anymore.

  22. @N8R

I don't know about common tasks, but it does boot in seconds. As for games, I don't think you could play anything other than web based games. Chrome is geared towards internet use only, so non internet tasks probably won't work. I won't use it for gaming or anything else like that, so just internet works for me. (I'm tiered of having to use my gaming PC for internet uses when I'm in the middle of doing something. By the time it boots you probably could have called info and gotten the info.)

  23. @Sandrock – Understandable. If you don't have an iPod touch you should get one. saves me going to my computer at least 3 times a day

  24. @ Sandrock

That's pretty much what I got from it. It's like for a secondary PC or a travel PC if all you want is pron in the hotel room. In which case, I got an iPhone.

Boot times… Windows is notorious for not only that, but for the amount of times you have to reboot it. I rarely reboot my Mac, it goes to sleep, but I rarely feel the urge to restart it. When I do, it's up in like 45 seconds and would probably be quicker if I didn't have it set to open iTunes, iChat, Simplify Media, Mail, and Little Snitch on startup. I do indeed push it a bit.

Also, no viruses or malware… but that's the cliche. That's why paying more is worth it in my opinion.

As for hardware specs, you can go to the Mac custom shop and have anything you want dropped in there. You're supposed to upgrade your RAM yourself (there's directions in the instruction book it comes with) and one of my favorite features is the Time Machine. Sure, Windows has System Restore, but you still have to install all of your Apps again… not only is that not the case with Time Machine, but if I deleted something way back and wish i had it now, I can go in to Time Machine and pull out just that file. Software, picture, song, game… it doesn't matter.

  25. @N8R – ah, Mac OS is so great it makes my heart sing. It's funny how I never need to reboot mine either but when I do it doesn't bother me at all.

My girlfriend always gets pissed because her Dell takes at least 4 times as long as it does my Macbook. That thing is surfing the internet 30 seconds after pressing "power." Now that's user-friendly

  26. I don't know how many Windows machines I've had fail at hibernating. I don't know if they got it right but mine never worked back when I had PCs

  27. @N8R

I leave my PC off when I'm not using it so as to keep the insides cleaner for longer periods of time (I have cats) and save power. Boot time is no issue with me when it comes time to actually using my PC for long periods of time. It is just annoying to have to boot it up to look at something on the internet. (actually, it don't boot up incredibly slow but when you want to get back to what you were doing, even quick boots are annoying.) When I get a chrome based tablet/netbook, I probably won't turn it off while I'm awake.

Also, I've never had a virus on my PC. I attribute that to not surfing the internet for pron. (seriously, just buy it. It is much safer that way.)

  28. Oh and for the record, I've never been fond of OSX. I've had to use it several time before, and it always annoyed me. I won't nook people for using it though.

  29. @Sandrock – I can definitely understand how it is frustrating switching to Mac when you are used to Windows. It does take some time to get used to it but I promise you the whole experience is a lot better for users like me. My top priorities on my computer are photos, music, movies, tv shows, internet and the like. For this type of user OSX can't be beat.

As far as games go I dual boot my iMac to 64 bit vista. 3Ghz dual core intel, 4GB Ram and an excellent ATI graphics card get the job done for most games I've played on it. Mostly I stick to emulators because they are a blast.

  30. @ Sandrock

I'm not knocking you either. I'm just listing my experiences in why I feel I have absolutely no need for Chrome OS. I've been running the Chrome browser for 2 days now and so far, I'm not finding anything better than Safari.

And I can't find my RSS feeds (kicks the desk). For a current events whore like myself, it's rather annoying.

I've never had a virus on my Mac either (chuckle)… and I've been to horrible, horrendous, terribly awful sites. It's not exactly safer for me to buy pron considering I could get robbed while I'm at the gents store (just saying).

  31. @ R Pad

Ok… but that's still the minority of wireless customers. Families are where the money is.

Businesses who provide cells tend to go with Sprint for multiple reasons. Namely, most of them are construction companies and use that walkie talkie feature I can't recall the name of right now. But once again, that's not the majority. In this economy… it's not even a guaranteed check anymore.

  32. @Mr. Padilla;

Have you ever considered yourself to be a gadget-aholic? There's a 12-step program for that, you know.

    -M

  33. @ R Pad

To be honest, I have no raw data so I don't know for certain. But I do know more people on family plans than corporate plans.

  34. Corps spend way more money. They are charged more for one thing, and they write the expense off so money is no object since it lowers taxable income.

  35. @R8R

If there is one thing I know from working at my company is that companies will over pay for just about everything. For example, the desks at my office look about as good as any other desk, but they cost $500-$600 with the executive desks costing in the $800 and up range. Those desks aren't worth more than $300 including the executive desks. It's funny how unfinancial high paid execs are.

  36. Ok… but does it total more than the profits earned from family plans?

I truly have no idea. Either way, that doesn't matter to me. I roll with the family set.

  37. @Ray – eh it’s all relative. While the data plan is a bit pricey, I get as much value as I can from it by using the ever living hell out of my phone. Especially given how data is charged normally, the plan pays for itself in my eyes. Luckily, Jacksonville isn’t a bad coverage area. I think Luke Wilson threw a postcard at us in his commercial.

  38. @Shockwave – We get a deal on internet because of my wife’s job, so I have no issues with the cost there. It is kind of a convience charge when you break it down, but I tend to be a wiki whore anyway… I ask and need far to many useless questions answered.

  39. @N8R

Corps just spend more in general. i get where you are coming from that there are more families than corps, but fams just spend less by ratio.

  40. @ Smartguy

By that logic, lets say a corp spends 1000 dollars to every dollar a family does but there are 1000 families to every one corp… wouldn't that equal out?

  41. @N8R

You also have to add in all the other services the companies buy from them. Internet, data, voice mail, email, etc…. The company I work for uses Verizon for everything, except email I think. I honestly don't won't to know how much they spend on the call center I work for. Now Sprint and T-Mobile may not make huge profits off of companies, but the big companies like Verizon and ATT do because of their other products.

  42. @ Sandrock

Oh, Sprint definitely does. Think of everyone you've seen with those "chirp" phones that act like walkie talkies.

I really don't know. If it were "Who makes more money, Elvis or the Beatles?" I'd be more confident with mt stance.

  43. @ Smartguy

For sure a small business. But that still doesn't tell me a whole lot. That's a bigger chunk of pie in one swing but if they lost the same amount of profits from x amount of families… I think they'd start emphasizing marketing toward families… like T-Mobile is.

  44. T-Mobile is pulling a Nintendo lol. Granted a lot of families (think over a thousand) would be equivalent to one small business. That small business pays more for the same services, and if they are disgruntled then it is indeed more detrimental. Word of mouth inbetween businesses is huge.

I see both sides though. Just playing Devil's Advocate

  45. I don't see either side better than the other. I truly have no clue.

Sticking with cellular alone… I don't know how many companies actually offer that perk anymore.

  46. @N8R

Where I currently work at and at previous places they paid per the byte for wireless data which needless to say was outrageous. They justify it because there are some weekends they don’t use the data, but the telco offers better customer support if they choose to pay per the byte. That was another huge charge, “premier technical support” since it was to a business.

Ask yourself this…who would AT&T care more about losing…a few families or a small business?

  47. @everyone

God, i miss this place. i wasn't commenting that much this week cause its finals week, and today's my last day of the semester!!! cant wait til the end of the day to start over playing demon's souls again!!! woohoo!!!!

  48. @rbee

Earning my MBA with a focus in accounting. I needed the extra hours for CPA credit. I'm sitting for the LSAT in the spring.

Undergrad earned: Bachelors of Science in Accounting. Cum Laude

  49. @smartguy

damn. good luck on that man. more CPA's are needed in this dimension. i'll be transfering to UC berkeley next year, and hopefully get in their nursing program. i want the real deal, not the 2 year nursing course most people take.

  50. @rbee

Thanks, goodluck with your program as well.

ah..healthcare…the business where there are no potential customers….everyone is a customer.

  51. @smartguy

thanks! and lol on your last comment. i never wanted to be in the healthcare industry. i wanted to be computer engineer in software, and maybe land a job in some major game studio. that was my dream. but unfortunately, i suck at math, and engineering needs a lot of math. haha. i decided to go for healthcare because it's actually fun giving shots to people, and saying that "everything's going to be fine" all the time.

  52. @N8R

i did enema's before, and i actually thought they were fun. 3 of my classmates back then gave me one each in one day for a practical exam. so i had 3 enemas in one day. true story.

  53. If you think poking people with sharp objects and sodomizing them with liquid is fun… let me know which hospital you end up working at so I can avoid it. (joke)

  54. @N8R

we dont use sharp objects at all. we use like a big-ass pitcher with a rubber hose attached to the bottom. We lubricate with lube, and just slip it in. the pitcher is filled with soap and distilled sterile water mixed together. the patient needs to relax, if the patient flexes too much it's gonna be like losing your virginity butt sex style.

  55. @ rbee

The sharp objects was a reference to the "giving shots is fun" thing.

You do realize that when I'm in the position (no pun intended) to tell someone"Why does rbee wanna be a nurse?" my response is gonna be "He likes giving enemas and telling people it's going to be ok."

For the record… this is not my typical morning discussion.

  56. Like giving enemas? 3 in one day?

If nursing doesn't work out I'm sure you could have a fine career with adult film prep lol.

  57. @Everything – Wow, missed quite the conversation after I went home yesterday.

@Office furniture – I actually had a discussion with my boss about this the other day. The reason corporations pay so much for office furniture has to do with all the testing and regulations that are needed just for you to have something legal to sit on at work.

For example: Currently I am sitting on a not-so-awesomely comfortable chair. This chair, again, a lot less comfy then my office chair at home which I got for $40 from IKEA (god I love them), cost the company $350 dollars.

Larcenous: WTF dude (my boss hates the word sir) why are we spending so much for chairs?

Boss Dude: Because, that chair has to be certified for you to sit in for 8 hours a day. That certification costs money. Don't blame me for the fact that you all have chairs that suck, blame OSHA.

Every piece of apporved office furniture has to be certified for use, or a company, especially one like the one I work for, can be fined heavily for using unsafe/unrated/comfy equipment.

  58. @smartguy

it had to be done. there was this one time that my classmate did one on me, and i couldn't take it anymore. i couldn't hold it in, it was hilarious. there were soap water and crap everywhere.

i really really want to go to one of those things. like, how they do the camera angles and stuff.

  59. Speaking of camera angles in pron… what's up with that one angle from between the dudes legs showing the underside of the action? Who wants to see that? Is it even possible for someone to watch themselves have sex from that angle?

I've always wondered that. They cut to that angle in almost every pron flick I've ever seen.

  60. @Rbee

Today is my last day of finals also, unfortunately its an A&P Comprehensive Final covering 12 freaking chapters.

I think I have decided to go back with my firs career choice and go get my Civil Engineering degree. This nursing stuff just isn't for me, only doing it for the quick copious pay.

  61. @N8R

I have wondered that also, but then I just figured, really how many angles can you get on the actual action. Left and right are usually a no go unless someone is pulling or moving cheeks out of the way, so you are left with over or under.

  62. @Rbee – yes I did! I didn't know who it was at first, so as my wife noted, my initial reaction was "Don't know this guy? Hrmm…. BAAALETED!"

Then I saw the next one you sent, and I added you :)

  63. Why is Ron Jeremy even famous? I don't think I have ever met a girl that thought he was attractive or a guy who'd like to see his hairy fat belly.

  64. @Slicky – a 13+ inch penis. A huge member and the ability to get hard on command is all it takes for a man to be famous in the porn industry.

  65. @ Slicky

In the '70's, the Hedgehog wasn't as out of shape as he currently is.

He'll also do anything that's not porn for free. He'll pay his own airfare and everything just to get his name out as something else.

  66. @Wiki – I hate you wiki. You make me feel like I just measured Ron Jeremy's Penis myself.

  67. @More weird Hedgehog Trivia – Jeremy is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most Appearances in Adult Films";[17] his entry on the Internet Adult Film Database lists more than 2,000 films in which he has performed, and an additional 281 films which he directed.[18] By way of comparison, John Holmes — the next highest-ranked male star on the AVN Top 50 porn stars — has only 384 acting credits listed on the IAFD.

  68. @Ron – thankfully I can say I've never seen his ridiculous snake.

I'm not in to that kind of porn anyway. I prefer pics/vids of real girls.

  69. @Ron Jeremy Wiki

"…due to his weight gain, all he can do nowadays is kiss the tip of his pe…"

Really could have gone a lifetime without knowing that, but thanks again for always relevant info.

  70. @larcenous

did you do your clinicals? civil engineering or architecture was also my career of choice. but once you do your clinicals, its gonna be fun as hell. especially if you get assigned in the emergency room or operating room. i love A&P. i ace on every quiz and exam when i took it for a medical assistant certificate. Bur it wasn't as in-depth in college A&P
