Xbox 360 Gets 802.11n Adapter for $99.99, Still a Rip Off

Xbox 360 Wireless N

Microsoft’s Major Nelson confirmed that the Xbox 360 now has an 802.11n wireless adapter, which is available for$99.99. Although he said that the item will be available “this holiday season”, several online retailers are listing it as in stock.

While it’s nice that 360 users will be able to take advantage of the superior range and throughput of 802.11n, the $100 price tag is ridiculous. There’s no way a wireless adapter should cost this much. Similar to how people buy Microsoft’s overpriced hard drives for Xbox 360, people will buy this overpriced product too. Oy.

  1. i just hook my xbox straight into the ethernet connection, almost always a good signal and i don't have to pay $100 for any wireless adapters or anything. i think its such a ripoff for some of that stuff, but im just glad i dont need it.

  2. @bsukenyan I use a wired connection too. It's just superior. Unfortunately, some people don't have their consoles set up for clean wiring or they just hate cables.

  3. I'm with post 1. I took my router and modem and put them behind my TV. with the DVR, PS3 360 and Apple TV in the Living room with the TV that seems like the smartest place to put my wireless network.

My Laptop and iMac are the only 2 that come in over wifi. Sometimes my iphone. I just get a better connection and much faster downloads on both PSN and XBL while hard wired.

for those of you who don't have this luxury I would recommend buying a third party wireless gaming adapter. you'll find those for a lot cheaper than 100 bucks

  4. Yeah for $99 it's a straight rip off. My TV is a ways off from the router (bout 15 to 20 feet) but we have an ethernet cord running to the xbox along the floor. PS3 is wireless except when the connection is wonky and then I just connect through the cord that's there already.

  5. @rpad yeah its a much cleaner connection, but i do realize not everyone like the cords. like shockwave said though, just put everything behind the tv.

I'm also a little lucky though because I live in a college apartment at a very technologically advanced campus. The entire campus is wireless and there are ethernet connections in every dorm room and in almost every bedroom in the majority of apartments off campus.

  6. It irks me that everyone tends to think that everybody has their console right beside their router in the same room. Wired is not an option for some people, like me. Also, it irks me that most people think that a wireless connection is not good. That is a total lie. My wireless connection is great and I hardly ever lag, only on multi plat games like Tekken 6 and Madden sometimes.

  7. Oh, as far as the wireless adapter, I've said it before and I'll say it again………why does M$ always get away with the things they do? Nintendo and Sony would never get a pass for that.

  8. @RROD – I moved my router to my entertainment center specifically for that reason. I spend more time at the tv then I do at my home computer.

I don't think anyone is trying to irk you but my preference of wired over wireless is from my personal experience. If I were building a house I would make sure that every room had a LAN connection.

Basically it comes down to this I think Wireless N can get as much as 130 MBPS whereas wired gets just over 1000 MBPS. no comparison really

  9. @Shockwave

I'm not saying you guys are TRYING to irk me, I'm just saying that it does irk me for everyone to assume that a wired connection is feasible. Trust me, I have no lag on PS3 exclusives with my wireless connection, only multi plats sometimes.

    1. I think some people are missing an important point about wired connections. For a lot of people, it's not as simple as moving the router to the entertainment center. For example, for people with a home office, the priority is having the best connection in the office, not in the living room.

  10. @RROD, I'm all for more wireless but I would like to see the technology advance. for the most part I never have issues on wireless either I just seem to get really good DL speeds and connections using ethernet since I have the ability.

One day I would like it if you didn't have to plug anything in at all. no power chord or HDMI or speaker wire. maybe one day but I dream

  11. @Rpad – definitely. but since I'm a console gamer my priority definitely lies in the living room. lol
