Boy Genius Report Gets Down and Dirty with Verizon’s Motorola Droid

Motorola Droid BGR

The boys (and presumably no girls) at Boy Genius Report have gotten their hands on Verizon’s Motorola Droid…and it looks awfully impressive. I’ve been waiting for a Google Android phone with a better CPU and the Droid deliver that (and more!). It looks like the best Android phone to date. BGR noted:

  • It’s running Android 2.0. Duh.
  • It’s thin. Just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS and the thinnest QWERTY-slider we’ve ever seen.
  • It is the fastest Android device we’ve ever used. (It’s running a TI OMAP3430 processor)
  • Awesome capacitive display. Plus it’s huge. Easily the best screen we’ve ever seen on an Android handset, and an amazing screen overall.
  • Have we mentioned this phone flies? It’s the Android device to beat, and easily the most impressive. From what we’ve been told, Google had a direct hand in the Motorola Droid. Something to the point of almost dictating every move Motorola made when designing and making the phone. Interesting, huh?

All of this sounds awesome on paper. I can’t wait to get my hands on the Droid so I can see for myself!

  1. i still think that this will be a hard sell against the iphone.

and personally i think the basic phone design is bad, i personally like something along the line of my LG voyager, or the env touch, etc.

i wonder if the basic design of the phone will draw people in or push them away…??

  2. meh, I'll stick with the iphone. with constant software and hardware upgrades by the one and only Apple I know I'll be totally satisfied with their product. it's been about 3 years of iPhone for me and I don't see myself switching phones for an impersonator.

  3. @Revan That is indeed a sexy phone — especially the screen — but I like this form factor a lot. I really want to try out the keyboard to see if feel was compromised for slimness.

  4. @rpad I just like the flip phones better than the slide phones with the qwerty keyboard. i don't mind how thick it is. i actually like it to be a little thicker so that i can hold it better than if it was really thin.

  5. Speaking of slider phones AT&T just released the HTC Tilt2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 Iwent to the store and played with the phone yesterday. Man it is nice. I almost got it as an upgrade, but I just can't get away from my Blackberry now. But WinMo 6.5 has plenty of great upgrades albeit they are a little late when compared to EVERYONE else.

  6. @Sandrock323 Do they ever! I should add a conditional to that statement. Flip phones are still pretty popular in Japan. The rest of Asia prefers sliders and candybars.

@SlickyFats WinMo 6.5 = yuck for me. The Tilt 2 is a great piece of hardware, but that OS is just nasty.

  7. @rpad Yeah i guess i can see the flip phones as a 90s thing. i just dont feel that there is enough room on the slide out phones for my hands to type on. i will probably be forced away from the flip phones in a couple years because they just wont make them.

  8. I have the Palm Pre and I absolutely love it. That keyboard looks flimsy to me. I can't complain about cramped cause the Pre's keys are quite close together. The more I learn about Android the more I wanna use it. We shall see what happens to the cell market when I can upgrade in 2 years.

  9. @TheJediRevan How's the keyboard working out for you? I was REALLY close to getting the Pre until I played with the keyboard a few times. I couldn't pull the trigger on it.

  10. I have defintly gotten used to it. It's the nicest phone I ever owned. I had the LG Voyager Titanium before but I wanted to get off my parent's plan so I went with the Pre. I have been very happy and lots of homebrew goodness on it. Legend of Zelda theme FTW!
