Coffee Talk #439: Your 2012 Most Wanted Games List

2011 was a fantastic year for gaming and 2012 looks even hotter! What are some of the games you’re looking forward to this year? Is your list full of sequels you expect annually? Perhaps it’s a franchise that’s making a long-awaited return. Or maybe it’s something…

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Ricky Rubio’s surprisingly strong play, choosing between Luck and RG3, or your favorite kind of pasta, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

2011 was a fantastic year for gaming and 2012 looks even hotter! What are some of the games you’re looking forward to this year? Is your list full of sequels you expect annually? Perhaps it’s a franchise that’s making a long-awaited return. Or maybe it’s something brand new and exciting. I’d love to see what’s on your 2012 most-wanted list. I’ll kick things off with some of my picks.

  • Diablo III — It’s Blizzard. It’s an action-RPG. This game will own me.
  • BioShock Infinite — I completely expect an epic story with crazy-deep gameplay.
  • Any DLC for Dragon Age II — To be totally honest, I’m more excited for more DA content than Mass Effect 3. I love all BioWare games, but I’m more of a fantasy guy.
  • Sound Shapes — Easily the PlayStation Vita gaming I’m looking forward to the most.
  • The Last Guardian — It’s Fumito Ueda’s last game with Sony and I’m hoping he goes out with a bang.
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII — The early buzz is that this game will blow XIII away.
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2 — I like moogles. Sue me.
  • Tomb Raider — I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw at E3 2011. There’s a ton of potential with this game and I’m cautiously hoping for another great Lara Croft adventure.

Of course there’s lots of stuff I’m leaving out. Loads of my friends and colleagues are psyched for Overstrike, Grand Theft Auto V, The Last of Us, Borderlands 2, Metal Gear Rising, and more. So how about it?!? What’s on you 2012 most-wanted games list?

  1. Diablo 3. Nothing else matters. In fact it could conceivably be the last game I buy until SC2 chapter 2 in 2013

  2. Mass Effect 3, Bioshock: Infinite, Assassin's Creed III (or whatever they end up calling it), Tomb Raider, Max Payne 3, Diablo III (if it actually launches this year – It's Blizzard, it'll be done when it's done), SSX, SoulCalibur V, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (good people working on it ,we'll see how it actually turns out), Hitman Absolution, and more stuff that I'm sure I'm forgetting. Seems like there's a lot of stuff coming out this year (again).

    1. Yeah, toss in Todd MacFarlane, and I'm sold (at least conceptually). I'm sure the story will be solid and the art direction so far looks good. How does it play though? That'll be the the true test.

    2. RA Salvatore is the John Grisham of fantasy in my opinion.

Not calling it a bad thing honestly but I can only read a few books. Like Robert Ludlum

  3. I'm not sure Ray, but I thought Bioware said that Mark of the Assassin was the last DLC for Dragon Age II. I could be wrong about that, but that's what I seem to be remembering.

    1. For some reason, I've never been able to get into Metal Gear. I played a couple of the PS2 ones and just got so confused that I stopped playing them and never bothered to go back to the series.

      1. Typically, the first act of a Metal Gear game goes slow. They really are story heavy with political overtones.I can see your point.

  4. Anybody see the Orange Bowl last night? I'd like to thank the University of West Virginia for the classic irony of making the continually lambasted Big East actually look like a football power conference for all of 3 hours last night before bolting for the door to the Big 12 as fast as they could.

  5. I'm looking forward to Halo 4 at the end of this year. Will probably check out GTA5 and whatever CoD comes out this year, but I can't think of much else that has me too excited right now. I could mention Pokemon Gray, but I haven't heard anything official from Corocoro so I won't list that. The third installment of Pokemon this year would be at the top of my list though. Other games I just thought of that I would be interested in are Prey 2 (not a day one purchase, but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless), and Luigi's Mansion 2 (when/assuming I get a 3DS at some point).

Honestly I'm still probably gonna be playing last years games for a while. I still want to play more Portal 2 (to finish all the achievements, need a good co-op partner for that though), need to play Gears of War 3, finish MW3 campaign, Halo: CE Anniversary edition, and Batman Arkham City. Also, it's hard to consider MW3 a 2011 game since the majority of my playing will occur in 2012. So I can't really say I'm looking forward to the 2012 CoD, but eventually I might get the 2013 CoD when I'm done with MW3.

    1. Good news…they are going to be releasing content every couple of weeks for MW3 to keep it fresh for you!

      sarcasm of course!

  6. Bioshock 3 for sure.
    Halo 4, of course.
    GTA 5, most likely.
Tomb Raider has my attention in the form of a raised eyebrow.
Alan Wake; ugh, I'm probably going to buy this for some reason.
Inversion, I will vomit on you.
Syndicate will probably turn out to be a Santorum.
    Lollipop Chainsaw = GOTY

    -M

  7. Mine are mostly the same as everybody else's, so why not try giving the games you WANT to exist, yet don't?

In this case, a Pokemon Yellow remake tops my list, followed by a sequel to Lock's Quest (surprisingly good game there). Add in a little bit of Pokemon Snap 2, Quell 3 (puzzle app), Marvel x DC, Star Wars: Battlefront 3 and Metal Gear Solid Collection.
    How about you guys?

      1. Sign me up for that. I'm among those who think that the series peaked with Super Metrod. Although, I did enjoy the Metroid Prime series.

        -M
