Congratulations to composer Austin Wintory for having the soundtrack for Journey nominated for a Grammy Award. The soundtrack is up for the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media award. The nomination is being touted as “the first videogame score in history to be nominated for a Grammy Award.” While the competition is fierce (John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Trent Reznor, and Howard Shore also have works nominated), being nominated is an outstanding accomplishment. It’s awesome that videogame music composers are being recognized alongside some of the biggest names in movie soundtracks.
Hilarious Bane Voiceovers (The Dark Knight Rises)
Here’s a hilarious video featuring scenes from The Dark Knight Rises, but with someone doing voiceovers that add a comical twist to Tom Hardy’s Goldmember voice that he used for Bane. Watch and listen as Bane talks about the fiber content of strawberries, fights Batman using numerous Mortal Kombat references, and shows his freestyle skills. Also marvel at Batman’s…interesting choices for driving music. Continue reading “Hilarious Bane Voiceovers (The Dark Knight Rises)”
Coffee Talk #544: Best TV Show of 2012
Kicking off the “Best of 2012” Coffee Talk columns is your favorite television show of the year. It was a tough choice for me and I was very close to giving the nod to Game of Thrones Season Two, but I’m going to go with another HBO show: The Newsroom. Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, vaping egg nog e-liquid, the Spike TV VGAs, or Jeremy Hoffman’s outstanding pulled pork, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
Kicking off the “Best of 2012” Coffee Talk columns is your favorite television show of the year. It was a tough choice for me and I was very close to giving the nod to Game of Thrones Season Two, but I’m going to go with another HBO show: The Newsroom. A lot of people enjoyed the show for its political commentary and use of real-world events. That stuff was great, but I loved the writing and character interaction. Aaron Sorkin himself describes the show as a romantic comedy and I’m an absolute sucker for rom-coms.
The cast is absolutely loaded, with Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, and Sam Waterston leading the older generation. Alison Pill, John Gallagher, and Thomas Sadoski lead the younger cast members. When the guy from Slumdog Millionaire is your seventh lead then you have a pretty stout cast. Oh yeah, Olivia Munn was there too.
The Newsroom was just a fantastic blend of great writing and strong performances infused with a unique dose of reality. I loved the debut season and can’t wait for more.
How about you? What was your favorite TV show of 2012?
NFL Week 14: What You Learned
Since so many of you are big (American) football fans, here’s some space to talk about the latest NFL games. Whether you’re discussing your fantasy league players, the Seahawks and Giants dropping 50+ points, or the severity of RGIII’s LCL sprain, please talk it up in the comments section!
Support Nightwing: The Series on Kickstarter
As many of you know, Nightwing is my favorite comic book character. With that in mind, I was thrilled when RPadholic Iceman sent me this Kickstarter link for Nightwing: The Series. Danny Shepherd and Jeremy Le are putting together a three-part mini-series on Batman’s former boy wonder and they’re looking for Kickstarter funding. The pledging prizes are pretty sweet — batarangs, a Nightwing mask, a Red Hood mask, and a full-on Nightwing costume. Check out the pitch video and the teaser trailer below. My Favorite Manny Pacquiao KTFO Pics
Over the weekend, Juan Manuel Marquez knocked out Manny Pacquiao. It was a spectacular counter right from Marquez that caused Pacquiao to get KTFO. Naturally, boxing fans with a modicum of Photoshop skills have pasted Manny’s prone body on all sorts of scenes. Here are three of my favorite Manny Pacquiao KTFO pictures. Enjoy! If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the joy of having staples removed from your body, Intelligentsia’s Ethiopia Limu Union, or the NY Knicks continuing to fool the public, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Please don’t answer these things now. Give it some thought and we’ll talk all about it next week.
As a tease, feel free to talk about your favorite music of 2012. All the stuff I bought this year was old, so I’m really behind new releases. What singles and albums did you dig in 2012?!?
Watch Jay-Z Ride the Subway to a Performance
Here’s a cool documentary that covers Jay-Z’s performances at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. It’s a nice behind-the-scenes look at the artist and one of the hottest new arenas in the country. There’s a really cute moment around the 19:20 mark where Jay-Z takes the subway to Barclays. He converses with an elderly woman that asks him about what he does and if he’s famous. Upon realizing that he’s Jay-Z, the woman remarks, “Oh, your’re Jay-Z! I know about Jay-Z!”
It’s a very cool and cute moment. I think it’s awesome that Jay-Z rides the subway (albeit with a security team in tow) like a real person. If he wanted to, I’m sure he could by his own subway car. It’s nice to see him mixing and mingling with the normals.
Anyway, check out the video when you have a chance and please share your thoughts on it in the comments section.
[Thanks to my darling Glenda for sharing the video!]

What Are You Playing This Weekend?
My post-surgery energy levels are still all over the place, but my attention span has stabilized (probably due to less Vicodin consumption), so I’m going to get back to gaming this weekend. I’m meeting up with my friend from THQ later today and she’ll have a copy of WWE 13 waiting for me. I’m really excited to play the Attitude Era storylines. The video clips are straight from the WWE archives, which is pure awesome. Paul Heyman did a lot of the writing to help shape these classic stories into interactive plots. He’s one of the sharpest minds in pro-wrestling and I’m curious to see how his stuff compares to the excellent WWE videogame writing of years past.
How about you? What’s on your weekend playlist?
