This morning I was sad to learn (via my friend Shane) that Wizard magazine has shut down. As a comic-book nerd, I loved reading Wizard. It was a great way to keep up with what’s now and what’s new in comics. I especially appreciated it during times I couldn’t afford to buy all the comics I wanted to read. Sadly, this excellent magazine is no more.
The good news is that Wizard World president Gareb Shamus has announced that the company is starting a digital magazine called — wait for it — Wizard World. The new venture kicks off in February 2011. I’m glad that Wizard will live on. I’m happy that it will evolve. Let’s face it — print is becoming less important every day. Hopefully Wizard World will adapt to the new medium and outdo its print predecessor.
Wow… that is sad.
Ray, you said it yourself:
"Let’s face it — print is becoming less important every day. "
This was a magazine… about comic books (which are also printed though I probably don't need to remind you). If the cornerstone printed periodical for comics is going digital, then comics may not even exist in 20 years.
That's sad.
I'd bet on print comics not being around in 20 years. They'll still be around digitally.
That's what I think is sad.
How are kids gonna conceal those in their school books?
How long until they add sounds and make them pretty much like cartoons?
I got my first comic (that was actually a cool comic) from a dude who worked at the mom & pop pizza shop on the corner of my block (anyone from the urban east coast knows the people who work at the corner pizza shop). He had a bunch of comics in the waiting area for kids to read. My brother and I were totally fascinated by the one comic he had as we waited for our pizza. Dude took notice, and said "Hey, if you guys like that… you can have that book". We thanked him up and down.
It turned out that the comic in question was the second issue of Punisher ever.
We ended up going back weekly and he would give us a new comic every week.
Eventually, that wasn't enough and we found the closest comic shop to our house called B.E.M. This place was in a terrible neighborhood, but it was in walking distance from our school. We ended up getting to know the people who worked there as well. They also sold hard to find vinyl 45's.
Well, that place closed and so did the pizza shop… sad.
I agree that digital comics of the future will almost be like cartoons. I see more and more of them having slight animation and voice acting. The animation won't bother me, but the voice acting…that'll be a big adjustment for me. After reading different characters over and over again, they sound a certain way in me head. I like imagining their voices. Acting will take that bit of fun away from me.
they should make thor sound like a gay southern dude
Ha! That would be hilarious. Though I think an effeminate Frenchman would be even better.
this is really sad for me personally
i remember like it was yesterday when wizard was released, i remember the first issue, i may still have it..not only was it an awesome read, it was a price guide as well….far more reliable than the once a year overstreet price guide
Oh well. I guess those comic books are next. too bad because the marvel reader on iOS is pretty bad…and expensive.
I'm not a comic fan really, so maybe my perceived notion of value is off.
@smartguy
I don't like the Marvel app on my iphone because their offering of free comics aren't interesting to me. also, i think the Marvel app is free for all iOS, no? I didn't pay anythinig for the Marvel app on my iphone.
@any comic fan
So I came across this earlier and it looks pretty cool I thought. Figured maybe some of the comic book fans on here might find this pretty fun to see. I thought it was pretty well done for only $300.

@bsu
is that video really NSFW?
@Tokz
I remember some swearing, that's about all I can think of. There was a little bit of violence and stuff, but I think the language was the slightly NSFW part.
@bsu
i guess. it seemed pretty kool regardless.
@Tokz
I've recently realized that I have not paid any attention to any type of warning or rating for anything lately because I don't need to and haven't needed to for a few years. I think I really realized it when I forgot that L4D was rated M, because I don't think of it being that bad of a game. So when you asked whether this video was really NSFW or not I had to stop and think about it for a minute.
I thought it was pretty cool also, pretty well done for only $300!
@bsu
i thought so as well but i didn't think anything merited a NSFW warning.
