Coffee Talk #530: Your Daily Driver Videogames

Today I’d like to talk about games you play every day. Sometimes there are videogames we all go back to, either due to a sense of habit or familiarity. There’s nothing surprising about these games (anymore), but there’s something comfortable about these daily drivers. For some people, these games have become a habit along the lines of eating, bathing, and brushing your teeth.

As for me, for most of the last three years, Civilization Revolution for iPad has been my daily driver. The gameplay is always fun for me, even though I know that every game I play will end with Queen Elizabeth conquering the world. Sure, there have been stretches when Civ was ignored in favor of games like Final Fantasy: Dimensions, but…more

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the San Francisco Giants’ World Series victory, your favorite park, or James Harden going to the Houston Rockets, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The gameplay is always fun for me, even though I know that every game I play will end with Queen Elizabeth conquering the world. Sure, there have been stretches when Civ was ignored in favor of games like Final Fantasy: Dimensions, but I knew I would eventually go back to it and I imagine that will be the case for the next few years. The game just makes me happy and all of us should do something every day that makes us happy. Since it’s probably a bad idea to eat bone-in ribeye steaks every day (and I can’t afford to), I’ll stick with Civ.

Now it’s your turn! Do you have any daily-driver games? If so, please let me know what they are. If not, why isn’t there a game you keep coming back to on a daily basis?

  1. I’d say Minecraft on my xbox, any version of Angry Birds on my phone, and when ever I use my computer for games, it’s usually Chrono Trigger and a Link to the Past. Final Fantasy 7 also gets played once every few years.

  2. Cartel Wars on my iPhone. I’ve played it just about every day since Dec 22, 2009.

Other than that, it’s really about styles of games for me. Sometimes I need something that will entrap me for weeks, so I pull out a sports game that’s not Madden or a Bethesda RPG.

Lately, I’ve been on PS3 alot more than 360. It started with me just liking the Netflix client better, and then PS+ sealed the deal. Of all the styles of games I like, Sony decides to give me a hearty dose every month for free. Lately, it was Payday: The Heist. There’s a co-op shooter I can pop in whenever I get the urge. They got Saint’s Row 2… there’s a sandbox to jump in. Blitz is the only sports game (I think) and it can get boring fast, but I never play with the Patriots, Colts, Bills, Dolphins, Saints, Bears, Giants, or Falcons… so I don’t run into that alot.

  3. I find it hard to go back to some daily driver games because my reason for going back isn’t the game itself, rather the great game in addition to playing it with friends. I was actually thinking last night how I sometimes really do wish that Mario was franchised out to some systems other than Nintendo. I would buy Mario Party on almost every system because it’s such a fun comfortable game that I want to play whenever I’m around friends and family who also enjoy playing it; but it wasn’t available on my xbox last night when my brother and I wanted to play that, but didn’t want to dig out enough still working controllers for my N64. This is a little bit of a tangent now, but most of the games that I can go back to every time are because of the people. I play L4D with my brother, wife, and Big Blak, so I usually only put the game in my xbox for them. I rarely put CoD or NBA 2k in the tray unless Tokz is online. It’s also been a while since I’ve played Halo because I am no longer online when Iceman is. N8R and I played through a lot of Portal 2 together, but that game isn’t so much a daily driver.

I could probably go through all the games I’ve ever played and tell you who I played it with and why; and that’s one of the most fulfilling things about the game. Sure I love my achievements and such, but it matters who I got the achievements with.

Pokemon is probably one of the only daily driver games I have, and that is one of the best examples of a game that has close ties to friends and family inherently built into the game. Trading and battling in vital to the enjoyment of the game, and those things are only amplified with close friends and family. But even though I play the games consistently, I still remember my friend who got me playing the game and the hours I spent trying to beat his charizard, or him trying to stop my leech seeding venusaur. When my youngest brother and sister got old enough to start playing they got hooked too, because I was. If I stopped playing now then they probably would; if they stopped playing then it would be easier for me to stop as well.

Plants vs. Zombies and Peggle were other daily driver games for me, but once my wife stopped playing them then so did I. Now I usually play puzzle games daily, or Pokemon when I get the chance. Lately I’ve also picked up Mario Kart again for my DSi, but hopefully I can get a 3DS (XL) soon and pick up Mario Kart 7 and some other Mario games.
