Coffee Talk #370: What’s the Oldest Game You Still Play?

What’s the oldest game you still play? I’m not talking about remakes or downloads of old games. I’m talking about a game that you still have the original cartridge or disc for. Do you even play old games like that?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Scarlett Johansson breaking up with Sean Penn, fights with CSS stylesheets, or hoping the Google Nexus Prime will be endorsed by Optimus Prime, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

What’s the oldest game you still play? I’m not talking about remakes or downloads of old games. I’m talking about a game that you still have the original cartridge or disc for. Do you even play old games like that? Or are you all current gen?

As for me, I still play Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance (2003) every few weeks or so. As many of you know, I love the FFT series and portable gaming. FFTA was pretty much made for me and I’ll be keeping my DS Lite around for years so that I can keep playing it (…or until a downloadable version is released for the 3DS).

So how about you? What’s the oldest game you still play?

  1. FYI, you can make your display name whatever you want it to be. For example, smartguy can still be smartguy. All he has to do is change the "Full Name" text in his Disqus profile.

    1. I have always just signed into Discus on Engadget via my Twitter account. I didn't know I could change my name, thanks. Hope I did it correctly

  2. I don't really play any of my old games. Heck I barely play the new ones I bought. Found 3 games I bought but were still wrapped yesterday while I was sick: The Darkness, Prototype and Wolverine.

I did pull out my Atari 7800 last week and rocked some Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Pole Position.

    1. Wow, Atari 7800, really? I think you take the award for oldest games played. What TV are you using and with what inputs?

    2. I recommend that if you play The Darkness that you use an online guide to avoid the game-breaking glitch in the middle, where if you talk to someone before you do something else you CANNOT progress in the story at all.

      1. It's a pretty well known glitch, but it's been a long time since I've played the game so I don't remember the exact details. Needless to say, I got about half way through the game and could not continue.

  3. I played Fallout NV yesterday. Are there really only 3 songs on the 2 radio stations??? I am only about 7 hours into the game. Also I remembered why I quit playing it before….random freezing. I have to save every 5 minutes because I never know when it will completely stop working.

  4. @Ray or anyone else that played Dugeon Seige 3
Did you play the demo on the console at all? I played it and enjoyed it. Is it a good representation of the game? I read your review, but I know we have different taste in games. But I figured if the demo was a good showing of the overall game then I might pick it up.

  5. Well I don't know which is older but I still play FFVII, Parasite Eve, and Abe's Exodus on my original still working PS1.

The oldest game I play to date has to be Chrono Trigger and Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf on a SNES emulator.

  6. I still play games on my N64 (Mario Party 2, Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, etc.), and I still have copies of pokemon that I have played on a game boy color. The only other thing older than that which I have is a NES, but I don't have any games for it anymore. Other than the N64 there aren't many older games that I'd want to play, I can think of Crash Team Racing for PS1. Some old Spyro games or Crash Bandicoot games could be fun because I never really played them before, but I don't feel like spending money on those games for my PS1 when I could get new games for my DSi or 360 which I would rather play. When I go for older games they are almost always Nintendo games. Sega was never really that fun to me so I don't really play those systems.

  7. We still have 2 PS2's hooked up in our house, so we can still play anything as far back as the PS1. I did a run of FFVIII earlier this year.

  8. My son has the 64 still active in his room and stays wanting to play Marioparty 3 or No Mercy with me.

This week, I was playing Super Mario World on the SNES.

If I play Oregon Trail on a new Apple Computer… does that count?

  9. I'm trying to set up the disqus profile from my iPhone… And it totally sucks.

I can't do anything with my profile except watch a wheel spin until I get home.

    1. Slowly but surely, I'm beating the system.

But it's giving me a headache and I don't have any coffee.

      1. If I go straight to the Disqus site, I get a spinning wheel that lasts forever. If I use the link I got in the email they sent me, it works slowly but surely.

The issue I'm having now is with the avatar. I can't drag the lines to crop it correctly. So it looks like I'll be rolling as Defaultman until I get back home.

  10. I'm a PS+ member so I play the old games that they give every month. Played some Streets of Rage 2 this week. My son 13 year old son laughed at it but I told him those graphics and gameplay were top notch when it was released back then.

  11. I don't have any of my old consoles anymore. However, I have started playing Jet Set Radio Future again.

  12. I'm not all that surprised; mine's the same as yours. Tactics Advance was the first FF game I ever played, and it's still my favorite.

PS: Occasionally, I'll play old PS1 games, but not very often anymore.
PPS: The new comment box looks very spiffy.

  13. I've been playing through Earthbound, slowly but surely. Never played it back in the day. Played through Secret of Mana and Super Metroid on my SNES in the last year or so, too.

    1. Super Metroid has to be one of the best games I've ever played.  2D action platforming at it's apex.

I liked this picture because it reminds me of my two favorite things in life: my wife and Metroid.

  14. After readingthe question more closely..

The oldest game I still play is Chess.

In fact, last week I scored on a chessboard made completely from Italian wood for 9 bucks at a yard sale.

    1. Haha well then technically the oldest game I play is anything with a deck of cards. I think Hearts or Spades or two if the older games still played. Bridge and pinochle might be older though, however I wasn't alive for either world war which seems to be a requirement for playing, lol.

  15. I am still playing Legend of Zelda which i got during 2006. it is mine one of the favorite games all the time. Whether it is too much old. But i like to play this game..

    1. The NES 1986 Legend of Zelda??? Always a classic and still pretty good. I enjoy playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on SNES still

      1. We still play a lot of the old Zelda games on the GameCube, since they all came as a preorder for one of the old Zelda games. My mind is failing me as to which one right this second. I'll probably remember as soon as I hit "post."

      2. I own it but I never could get into it. I don't recall how much of it I played but not enough to enjoy it
