Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, your Wimbledon 2011 pick, the MLB McCourt drama, or George Clooney being single…again, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
Today’s Coffee Talk is a request from RPadholic N8R. He would like to know about your very first cell phone. Do you remember the make and model of your first mobile phone? Did any of you rock the Zach Morris? Or did you have one of those classic Nokia candybars? Did any of you start out with the Motorola RAZR?
As for me, I borrowed my Dad’s Motorola StarTac a few times while I was in college (mostly to look cool), but the first mobile phone that was all mine was an Ericcson CF688. Hell, I don’t even remember what carrier it was on, but I remember being enamored by its slickness and form factor…which seems hilarious when looking through the retroscope.
Now it’s your turn! What was your first mobile phone?
My first was a Motorola… not sure of the model, but it was before the RAZR. The carrier was Cricket… which I'm not sure even exists anymore. It wouldn't work outside of Pittsburgh.
I remember thinking it was awesome that I could program my own ringtones on it. The way you had to do it was half coding and half knowing the music. All the ringtones were in beeps back then and nobody had real music on their phone so the fact that I had my band's jams and other crazy stuff (like the Red Dwarf theme song) in do-doo-doo ringtones was pretty cool.
That's also funny when you think about it now. Because I can clip any song I want in Garageband and shift it over to my phone in no time now.
Cricket is alive and kicking. The company is actually doing well in the second-tier market.
Wow… I had no idea because I haven't seen nor heard about them in several years.
That company was SO ghetto… are they still like that? Is the "second-tier market" the PC way of saying "ghetto phones that aren't burners"?
Ha! Nah, I think second-tier market consists of carriers like Cricket, US Cellular, Virgin Mobile, Metro PCS, etc. I wouldn't call them ghetto, but they're not as comprehensive — and in some cases only regionally available — as the big four.
Seriously (and in all fairness) everybody I know that's on one of those carriers in recent years are either temporary overseas travelers or pretty ghetto people. Some of them in and out of jail a few times for pretty stupid stuff.
This is just my experience though.
Put it this way… I got that Cricket phone and the plan from the Pakistani lady who ran the convenience store at the end of the block.
After very little research, I found this link:

I think this was my phone.
Moto but it was fat with a tiny flap for the mic. Red numbers only lol.
Then a panasonic sprint candybar.
They are resellers of VZW I believe
My first phone was a LG vx8300. It was that really popular flip-phone on Verizon about 5-6 years ago. After that I got a used 'V' which I had for a while (until it couldn't even work anymore) and then I upgraded to the LG voyager which I still have right now. After that who knows for sure what I will end up with, but I'm kind of hoping for the Thunderbolt. I wanted a cell phone before that, but my family was so anti-cell phone for the longest time and actually didn't get cell phones until about 4 years ago. I didn't get mine until I bought it myself after I came to college and pretty much had to have one. I knew people who didn't have cell phones all through college, but that wasn't going to be me.
I had one of the first Tracfone's. It was terrible and could barely get reception in my own apartment.
Nokia Tracfone baby!!!!
Green screen, snake, and monophonic ringtones FTW!!!
motorola i90c from nextel still have it to this day plan on showing it to my kids someday @n8r cricket is huge here in houston
REALLY!!!
The last few times I went back to Pittsburgh, I saw nothing of them and I never see anything out here in CA. I just assumed they died.
they even have android phones now
Boost mobile is what we always have commercials for around Indiana and when I see commercials from Chicago stations up at my fiance's.
Cricket is big in CO too.
I had a Nokia 5160 and what seemed like and endless supply of extra face plates back in 98-99.
Then I think I had the same type of phone but they took off the antenna.
After that I lose track of the order of phones but here they are:
Motorola V190
Sony Ericsson T230
LG CU500 (loved the camera and media buttons on that phone)
Motorola SLVR (x3)
Palm Treo 600
Palm Treo 650
LG VU (x2)
LG Incite (x3)
Blackberry Bold 9000 (x4)
Samsung Captivate (x3)
Oh yeah the iPhone belongs in there too.
Oh yeah and I had the Cingular 8125 (x2)
My first phone was an Ericsson GF 788:

I had it during my sophomore (or junior) year of high school and I remember that I could only use it for emergencies. I had to have it turned off and I put it in the front pocket of my book bag for every class. It was way too bulky to keep in my pocket all the time.
After that, my next phone was a Motorola/Nextel i1000.

It seemed like a downgrade, but at least I got the chance to send and receive my first text message. What a pain in the ass it was to type a message with the number pad.
Ah, the memories.

My first cell phone was back in 2003 i got some nokia candybar phone. I cant remember the model but it was a green screen one. I just loved nokia brands but around 2006 cingular came out with their phones made by htc and got the cingular 3125 that was i guess my first official smartphone.
@n8
Yeah cricket is kinda a big 2nd tier company here in chicago and they even have android powered phones too!
…but they're ghetto… right?
@n8
Yeah! They are lol!
very ghetto you gotta call cricket when you leave town so the phone will work!
lol
Funny thing happened today…
I ran into a guy I know today that has a Metro PCS phone. When I saw him, he was like "Dude, I just called you like an hour ago."
I looked at my phone and told him "Yeah, I have no missed calls" because I didn't have any missed calls.
He then exclaims "MAN… I HATE MY F**KIN' PHONE"
And I was reminded of this conversation.
