Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the U.S. Postal Service nearing collapse, Apple’s iOS 5 announcement on Monday, or day trips to Chicago, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

The next few editions of Coffee Talk will be about E3 2011. Today, let’s talk about the games you’re looking forward to learning more about at E3 2011. A bunch of my industry friends are high on BioShock Infinite. I’m looking forward to learning more about Final Fantasy XIII-2. Comic book fans are psyched to get more details on Batman: Arkham City. A lot of people are expecting Hideo Kojima to announce a big release that will hit in 2012 — 25 years after the first Metal Gear game was released.

What games are you looking to learning more about? I’ll spend part of E3 2011 digging up info on the games you’re psyched for. So start naming them (please)!

  1. Gears 3, not for me but my FB friends (links = hits).

I am in the same boat as N8, I have no idea what is coming down the pipeline for games this year and next.

    1. I think I'm getting to the point that Slicky is at with gaming. I about hit that point around this time last year, but a bunch of things came out that I was curious about.

I think my expectations get too high anymore. After Fallout 3, I truly expected more games to follow that lead… and not even the sequel (if you can call it that) lived up to potential.

So, even though I'm not into elves, dragons, magic, and ogres… I guess Elder Scrolls V has me the most curious.

There's also the new Assassins Creed… but I could probably watch a spoiler video of that and be happy because I want to know how the story ends and I fear that they are going to screw it up.

      1. Hearing great things about Skyrim. I was never into the series, but my E3 judge friends have told me that it'll keep Elder Scroll fans more than happy.

      2. skyrim is my only answer as well–also hoping rockstar will announce something

  2. Bioshock Infinite. My friend who won the 2k11 contest got an extended look at it when he visited 2k. To quote, "It's probably going to be the best RPG to date". He's a big RPG fan at that.

    Other games: BF3, Uncharted 3.

      1. Yeah I'm not sure it can top The Witcher or Witcher 2. Euro RPGs?

It will set the new benchmark in Western RPGs.

    1. @SG

That was your friend that won that! I thought you were just being friendly and all, spreading the love.

      1. No, I play CoD with him most of the time and we played WoW together. I've known him my whole life lol.

  3. I don't even know what is potentially coming out.

    2 Games I know I want.

BioShock Infinite (I didn't play the second one for more than 2 hours but I love the franchise)

inFAMOUS 2 (I know its coming out soon)

      1. I hope not. I really got back into games over the weekend. Nothing time consuming though. Mostly casual games. Played lots of Castle Crashers and Pixel Junk Racers (Speed Monkey is a blast….got up to 347 on the oval track, if you've never played it 347 is INSANE)

Also looking forward to Uncharted 3.

  4. Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, Bioshock: Infinite, Batman: Arkham City, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and a ton of other stuff.

  5. Anyone heard of Minecraft? A friend of mine bought me this game even though I never asked for it. In fact I told him I wanted iTunes credit so I could buy t he new Penn and Teller stuff. So he comes over and purchases Minecraft on my iMac for me.

This game is so horrible. I had to pretend that it was interesting because I appreciate the gesture but didn't want to be rude. Anyone ever had to do this?

Maybe if the visuals were a bit more modern I'd like it. It just looks so bad on my computer.

    1. Somebody gave me Castlequest for the NES as a gift… but I didn't pretend to like it.

      -M

    2. Not with a game. I have a secret strategy (that my wife doesn’t realize I do on purpose) where around Christmas and my birthday, I buy all the games I want myself. Because too often folks who aren’t in the know have seen a game in the bargain bin, it had a darkish or superheroesque cover, and they were like “Nate will love that”…

The last time I think that happened, the game was The Sopranos for PS2.

On the flip side, I have 2 brothers who are both gamers, but neither of them follow it like I do. So last Christmas, I evaluated both of their tastes individually and used what I know about games to select their gifts.

My one brother has always liked RPG’s I don’t think he ever played a western one. He also loved the GTA series and he’s an avid Mad Max fan… I got him Fallout 3 GOTY edition, and he’s still telling me how it’s the greatest game he’s ever played.

My other brother is a Lucasarts mark. As soon as Lucasarts releases something, he’s the first in line. He even replays Rogue Squadron or that Jango Fett game once a year I’ll bet. Anyway, he straight up told me he wanted RDR or Batman AA but couldn’t afford either of them (at the time). So, I grabbed him RDR because it was longer and had better replay. He geeked.

My point is… it’s really not hard to pick up on someone’s tastes. Why can’t other people get a clue?

  6. I'm hoping to hear something from Valve during E3 this year, despite them saying they have nothing new to show right now. Other than that I honestly don't really know of any other games that I am looking forward to right now.

In other news my laptop is basically done for now. It got dropped and the part where the charger hooks into the computer no longer works. That piece broke and the charger plug in is loose (but still attached) inside my laptop so it can't charge. I have no clue how much this will cost to fix, or whether I should just invest in a new computer (which I don't have the money for, but would simply love to get a new computer). Hopefully this week sometime I can get it looked at and find out how much this is gonna cost me.

    1. @bsu
If it isn’t a gaming rig, it’s cheaper to get a new one. HP quoted me a price of almost $400 including shipping to get it fixed. Time frame of repair was 4-6 weeks. If you get a number above $300, I’d just put that towards a new one. Get a BestBuy credit card, and anything over $200 is 0% for 18 months. You can handle that.

I’d like it if Valve showed a NEW source engine.

      1. @Smartguy

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. There is supposed to be a Toshiba certified repair place near Indy that I'm gonna try and talk to sometime this week, and depending on the price I'd prefer to put the money towards a new laptop (especially since I only spent $350 on this one brand new). And there is a fairly nice looking toshiba with an i5 for $699 at BestBuy right now which also qualifies for the free xbox 360. My options aren't looking too bad, I am just a little upset this part of my laptop broke in the first place.

A new game engine from them would be awesome, since the current engine is 7 years old (my IQ and accuracy of information increases when I am online, and drops incredibly when I don't have internet access, haha). I think a new game engine would really get them a lot more attention right now, as would information about a new Half-Life game.

      2. @BSU

Yeah for a laptop that cheap (not making fun) I wouldn't spend too much repairing it. I'd probably not repair it anyway. Just yank the HDD and go shopping.

      3. @Smartguy

Yeah I now it's cheap, but it was never meant to be a real workhorse of a computer. I don't plan on spending much to repair it, and I would try to do that myself if it wasn't so damn hard to get it opened up. Most likely I could open it up easily (unscrewing everything is simple) but it's all built together to tightly I feel like I'd tear something important apart when getting to the broken piece.

      4. @Bsu

Typically for that kind of repair you have to solder on the chassis. Might have to take the LCD case apart to remove the top half in order to get good access. The work itself probably isn't that hard to do if you want to do it yourself. YouTube my friend.

      5. @Smartguy

Yeah I will be looking on youtube to see if anyone else has taken apart a laptop like mine (toshiba L505 something else I don't remember right now). I'm positive I could fix it myself, I just have to get to the problem. It'll be tons of fun! ha.

  7. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Final Fantasy XIII: Type-0 and Versus, any and every NGP/Vita title for launch, another Smash Bros game (PLEASE!). Any of the 1st-party 3DS games would be nice to know about as well, and some info on games for Project Cafe would be most welcome as well.

      1. Do we have any hope of a Castlevania game at all? I'd like to see that.

PS: I could definitely see a 3D Paper Mario game. What do you think?

      2. @Lunias

3D paper Mario won't happen this year. Maybe late next. If they have a surprise 3DS title I think it will be something like Pikmin.

      3. That'll be nice and popular. It's one of those games that would just be much better in 3D. Imagine the characters and enemies "popping out" at you. Maybe even onomatopoeia (bam, pow, occasionally a SHA-ZAM!).

    1. A 3D Punch-Out would be awesome.

I want Bald Bull to charge into my face (no homo).
