Today’s Poll: Do You Like Sony Qriocity?

Not that you can currently use it on your PlayStation 3 at the moment (thanks to external intrusions), but I wanted to get your opinions on Sony’s Qriocity service. A unified approach to streaming music, movies, and television sounds great on paper, but there are separate services that do each of these things so well. I know that a lot of you are big on Netflix and some of you use Hulu. Some of you dig Pandora, while a few of you are Slacker or Last FM peeps. Do you think Qriocity can take the place of those services? Or is it just not good enough?

      1. Well, then I'm definitely not interested. I'm pretty sure my year old Sony XBR can't use this service and I'm not buying another Sony TV. Panasonic and Samsung just make too high of quality really.

A sub service is great, but not if it is limited to a particular set of devices. I used to have that problem with iTunes, but AppleTV solved that problem since it can be hooked to any TV with an hdmi port. iTunes also works on Windows and OSX. I'm not sure if such a closed system like that is at all appealing to most people.

  1. i dont understand why anyone would need this. If, for some reason, you needed to listen to music on your ps3, why not just buy a song on amazon or itunes and stream the thing over using tversity, Windows media player, or memory card?

I suppose slacker, or pandora or whatever is decent if you are trying to discover new music, but you can stream those services from your computer as well…I feel like the ps3 should only be used as a gaming console, DVR or a way to browse netflix. Does anyone here regularly use the "picture slideshow" function on your ps3?

Then again, i am also somewhat stubborn and old fashioned. Im the guy who goes into starbucks and asks for a "large coffee'

      1. zing…all we have here in va is starbucks, dunkin donuts and coffee beanery

i usually go with dunkin donuts….they are the least condescending and pretentious

    1. or better yet, step boldly into the 2000s and pick yourself up an ipod or portable HD, and plug that bastard in via usb and hit shuffle

    2. I can't stream anything to the PS3 via my Mac. All the media servers available don't work.

Sony's unofficial answer to this is "it's because you run a Mac".

Meanwhile, I have no problem streaming to a MICROSOFT Xbox 360. Isn't that curious?

So, aside from Sony trying to make my decision in what PC to own and inadvertently trying to stifle my artistic career… Mac owners would have a use for Qriocity. However… I just use a different device to stream to.

      1. Yeah I own it. It costs $20 and you get a key that keeps it activated. I'll send you my key via IM or email later if ya want. I never use it anymore.

        If it's important to you

      2. Ahh… I don't know how important it is to me.

With the 360, it's more important because you can stream music into your games. For example, I have a saved playlist called "cowboys" that I only play while playing RDR. It's comprised of like "Blaze of Glory", "Cowboys from Hell", a bunch of old Gene Autry, and the soundtrack to "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" among other things.

However, with the PS3, the only times I ever wanted to was when I was done playing something and wanted to watch a movie on my computer without switching consoles or channels. It's not that much of a pain in the ass though. It's not like it's 1990 anymore and I have to actually get up from my chair to do it.

By the way, do you like blues? If so, I got a record for you.

      3. Yeah I'm interested in blues. I actually just bought a blues album off of iTunes. You can see with Ping I believe. Dax Riggs' latest album. I liked his metal stuff, so this is quite the departure but not bad.

Yeah if you can already stream to the 360 that is sufficient. I used to stream to my ps3 so I could listen to music on my surround system…but my AppleTV handles that now.

      4. Nullriver is the same people that made the app I use to stream to my 360… so it has potential.
