Apple’s iPad 2 launches globally today. It will be available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Meanwhile in America, thousands of customers that placed online orders on the U.S. launch day (March 11) are still waiting for product.
I got my order in late on launch day and have an estimated (and probably exaggerated) ship date of April 1. Browsing through Apple’s forums, customers that placed their orders around the same time I did will be getting product next week. Hopefully mine ships soon as well. The good news is that Dragon Age II has kept me thoroughly entertained. Otherwise I’d be annoyed by one of the most poorly handled launches in recent Apple history. I’d be especially annoyed that some guy in Belgium will be enjoying his iPad 2 today while eating fries (which are Belgian, not French) and drinking Hoegaarden while I’m still waiting for my damn product to ship.
This launch would have been so much better if Apple did online pre-orders and waited a month to build up a healthy supply of units. Screw the Portuguese people. I want my frickin’ iPad 2 already.
I noticed on the Apple forums that people that ordered around the same time as me and AFTER have received shipping notifications. I have not. I called to inquire and an Apple CSR said the she'll credit back the cost of my Smart Cover. Let's see if that actually happens.

I held a new iPad the other day at BestBuy. The form factor is cool, but I don't think I'll upgrade with this refresh.

As expected, the iPad 2's global launch was a crazy success. My unit's status has changed to "prepared for shipping". Hopefully preparing for shipping doesn't take more than a day.
After Monday's status changed, my iPad 2 finally shipped on Wednesday, but didn't leave China until Thursday. I was really hoping to get it by tomorrow so I could play some games, but apparently it takes two days to prepare something for shipment. It looks like it won't get here until Tuesday, almost four weeks after I ordered it.
This is definitely one of the three worst purchasing experiences of my life. It's probably the worst, but I want to think it out a bit more.

That's one of the first things I'm going to buy. I played a bit on my friend's iPad 1 and loved it.

My iPad 2 finally landed in America…well, Alaska anyway. *sigh* It should get here Tuesday at the latest, but probably on Monday. That's still crap. Two days to "prepare for shipment"?!?
