Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the Miami Heat’s inability to beat elite teams, Charlie Sheen’s insane interviews, or when Miley Cyrus will go all Britney Spears, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
The iPad 2 is set to be announced on March 2, 2011. The original was a crazy success, selling 15-million units in less than a year. Some analysts have pegged the sequel to sell twice as much. Today I wanted to see if any of you are interested in an iPad 2 and what features you’d like it to have. While I’m sure it’ll have a front-facing camera, more RAM, and a faster CPU, it looks like it won’t have the feature I really want — double the resolution.
On a side note, what’s up with Apple taking all the heat away from gaming conferences? The iPad 2 announcement will be during Game Developers Conference 2011 and the rumor is that Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (think iPhone 5 announcement) will take place during one of the same days as E3 2011.
So have at it (please)! What features do you want to see in the iPad 2?
Faster performance and UI enhancements changes to iOS for iPad. Retina display would be nice, but it's not necessary for me. I think the res might be bumped up a bit in the new one but I have never once felt that my iPad needed to have better resolution.
I'd really like the App Store to be refined to mimic the iPhone App store. I honestly haven't bought an app for my iPad in 6-8 months because I hate using the store on it.
I'm not certain that there will be a resolution bump. Doubling the resolution would require no effort on the development side since four pixels could be used where one is under the current resolution. Anything in between would require more work.
You've said that you never felt that your iPad needed to have a better resolution, but did you feel similarly about your iPhone? "Retina Display" is pretty awesome.
Retina display is great but putting an IPS panel on an iPad would make it a bit too expensive.
I wouldn't say no to it, but it's low on my list of wants for number 2
It'll be interesting to see what Apple does. As I noted in an earlier article, I agree that it's too expensive for 2011. However, Apple's competitors will be releasing screens with higher resolution than the iPad. Considering that the company has a stranglehold on LCD manufacturers, I wonder if it can pull off a surprise that would dazzle consumers and make things even more expensive for competitors.
@Ray
Yeah their strats are interesting to say the least.
Also a front facing camera is lower on my list than the IPS panel. I just don't care to video chat. I have a friend on Skype who only wants to video chat. Maybe because she has kids? Idk. I tend to either play a game or do more than one thing at a time and video cramps my style. I feel kinda rude not paying complete attention as opposed to an IM or email
Apple could get away with keeping the resolution low for one more generation because it has a huge software lead, but it would risk losing some sales to gear heads that want higher specs. I'm anxious too see how it will play out.
I'm actually curious as to how they are going to go with processors. Would they still use inhouse ARM or branch out to a Tegra2?
nvm. Not sure if Tegra 2 does binary natively as opposed to JiT.
The rumor is that the A5 is a multi-core version of the ARM/PowerVR combo of the A4.
Just sent off a review to Machinima. I wanted the game to be good because it has unique art, music, and gameplay mechanics…but it really needed a bit more money and development time. It's sad because its flaws prevent it from being great and it could have been.
what game did you wanted to the be good? :P
I'll post a link to the review when it goes live.
maybe im not following the subject, but i really dont know what game you reviewed…
Yes and I'm not going to tell you until the review is up. Machinima has the right to run it before I start talking about it too much.
