Do You Care About Cloud Storage on Consoles?

Kotaku posted an interesting rumor that PlayStation Plus users will be able to store PS3 game saves on the cloud. Saves would be tied to a PSN account, allowing users to access saves from various consoles. Assuming there will be games that work across the PS3 and the upcoming NGP handheld, this would allow gamers to access save files from different platforms too.

Storing game saves on the cloud would be useful on several levels. Obviously it would help gamers save some hard drive space. It also ensures that save information will remain even if a hard drive dies. Gamers that play on multiple consoles (perhaps their own and a friend’s) would have an easy way to access their save information. Lastly, it encourages developers to work on games that are compatible with the PS3 and NGP. Being able to start a game on a PS3, save, and continue on an NGP (and vice versa) would be a powerful feature.

While I find this rumored feature fascinating, I wanted to get your thoughts on the matter. Do you ladies and gents care about cloud storage on consoles? Is this a feature you want in the immediate future? Or is it just a curiosity to you?

  1. I think the idea is cool, but I would really have to have some assurances that all of the information is safe no matter what.

      1. Probably unfounded, but I think there are others who would have the same concerns. I know of phone information servers that have crashed and lost people's information on some carriers. For example, everyone with a Sidekick had all of their phones information completely wiped because of a similar setup failing, so all phone settings, saved files, contacts, etc. I've heard of similar problems with other phones in the past also.

Like I said, I'm sure my concerns are probably unfounded and there are stark differences between those situations and this one, but it makes me leary of fully trusting a system that I as a consumer can see as similar. If it were just profile information that is one thing, still severe, but save files and such would be much more valuable to me and something I would not want to lose.

I'm not saying the cloud is a bad idea, I am in full support of cloud computing and storage, but I would want to know that everything is fully tested and functioning without the risk of a server crash or information loss before I stored everything in the cloud.

      2. The Sidekick fiasco was pure idiocy on Microsoft's part. I'm still amazed that the servers weren't backed up. I would like to believe that Sony wouldn't do anything that stupid.

My cloud experiences have been mostly positive. I love Google Docs, storing contacts on GMail, DropBox, etc. Hard drives fail. Cloud storage — if backed up properly — won't.

      3. I would hope that Sony wouldn't do anything like that either, but that doesn't mean that they won't/can't.

I would agree that I have had good experiences with cloud computing that Google is in charge of, I feel like they are the most trustworthy as far as keeping information safe and backed up. It simply takes time for some people to get used to a new company taking up cloud computing to store all of the consumers profile information, and they would need to prove that to me. I feel like Google has been trustworthy in that aspect, but they are really the only ones. Sony has some work to do, mostly being smart and backing up everything to gain consumer's trust.

My faith in Sony isn't as strong as my faith in MS to handle a software solution. Sony makes great hardware but so far their software has been less than par for my tastes.

Indeed it is but Sony is pretty poor at delivery. I feel the same way about Samsung. Great hardware…not so good software.
