According to Famitsu, developer Tose claims that PlayStation 3 is ahead of Xbox 360 by a cool one-million units in terms of global installed base. At a recent presentation, Tose reported that the current worldwide numbers for the three major consoles are approximately:
- Wii: 74,000,000
- PlayStation 3: 42,000,000
- Xbox 360: 41,000,000
I’m sure this will shock some American gamers. Xbox 360 is way ahead of PS3 in North America, but globally it has been close for the last year. Tose believes that Sony has pulled ahead of Microsoft. What do you think of these numbers?
I wouldn't be surprised if it was even more of a difference than that. Xbox is definitely the bigger console of the two in America, and we tend to think that we are a bigger nation than we really are sometimes, so I agree it might shock plenty of people.
Although the data would be nearly impossible to collect, I think it would be interesting to see which of the three is the most PLAYED console in America. With as many Wii consoles that people talk about which go unused on a consistent basis it could even be the Xbox.
Im not surprised at all. The reason M$ launched the 360 when they did was to make sure they had a huge install base before $ony. The PlayStation brand is always going to sell like hot cakes.
I'm glad that MS is so big here, it makes Sony try harder here. That said I haven't really enjoyed an exclusive on PS3 since MGS4. God of War 3 didn't do it for me. The story was lacking to me. LBP wasnt for me either.
What Sony exclusive is there on the horizon if I have no interest in KZ3? Serious question. Not playing fanboy, I play WoW more than any console.
The Fight. *joke*
I had hopes for that game honestly! It was supposed to be the mature game that made me go buy a Move. Well suffice it to say I am still $150 richer.
Fore.

my plans for world domination are complete!!!

It's funny. I was chatting with an uber powerful marketing woman. I should have mentioned in the article that the numbers — if they're true — don't surprise me at all. As popular as Xbox 360 is in America, the PlayStation brand is much stronger globally. Despite the one-year head-start, I always thought that Sony would close the gap and surpass Microsoft this generation.
