Coffee Talk #238: Favre’s Streak vs. Ripken’s Streak

Brett Favre received a ton of attention going into yesterday’s game, simply because people were curious to see if his streak of consecutive games played would continue. The whole thing got me thinking about another streak: Cal Ripken, Jr.’s.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Zach Galifianakis lighting up a joint on Real Time with Bill Maher, the San Francisco Giants flushing away the Bonds era, or the worst Halloween candy ever (it’s Necco Wafers), Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Brett Favre — the NFL’s master of drama — received a ton of attention going into yesterday’s game, simply because people were curious to see if his streak of consecutive games played would continue. Dating back to September 1992, Favre hasn’t missed a game. Although he received a facebuster yesterday, he extended the streak to 292.

The whole thing got me thinking about another streak: Cal Ripken, Jr.’s streak of 2,632 games of baseball. From May 1982 to September 1998, Ripken didn’t miss a game.

Which streak is more impressive to you? Football is a contact sport and it’s easier for players to get injured. That said, baseball players play way more games and have a longer season. Certainly both streaks are a bit manufactured and went on longer than they ought to, but they’re both impressive. Anyway, kindly vote in today’s poll and discuss!

  1. im biased, im an orioles fan

i just think that ripken's streak will NEVER be broken, but i believe peyton manning will beat favres streak…manning NEVER gets sacked. I believe manning will break in it 2016…if he chooses to play that long

  2. did anyone buy the zombie apocalypse add on for RDR?

its actually pretty badass for 10 bucks

@n8r (when you get here, sporting your saints logo)

what are your impressions of Fallout new vegas? Ive heard its unexcusably glitchy…is the glitching enough for you not to reccomend the game? Have you enjoyed the game so far?

  3. I voted both because the games that they play(ed) are completely beastly in different aspects and I could not do either.

  4. I voted for both because they are each very impressive. Football is very much a contact sport. Then when you take into consideration how much more Favre gets hit compared to say Peyton Manning who Thundercracker and I both think has the potential to break his record, he is injured all of the time and still goes out to start the game. That takes a lot of mental toughness, even if he only stays in for a few plays. Playing hurt like that, especially repeatedly, takes balls. I ran cross country in high school with a broken foot for a short period of time, I can't imagine doing that over and over again throughout a period of 18 years just to keep a streak alive.

And Ripken playing that many games, although I think there is a much lower chance of injury and contact, is just incredible. There are tons of games each year it is amazing he stuck with it for that long. I would think it could get boring at some point because of how repetitive I would think it could get. But I agree, no one will probably break that record.

  5. @ Thundercracker

I don't know about the PS3 version, but the 360 version hasn't been all that glitchy. There were a few parts in mountains where the texture would blink in and out, but that was all I noticed.

I also got the Undead Nightmare pack. I started to play it, but I was pretty out of touch with the gameplay of RDR because it had been a while since I played it. I figured I'd get back to it.

    @ Smartguy

(Sigh) hell of a game last night. Defense on both side were outstanding.

    Where is my avatar link?

  6. My videos have a mobile site with pretty excellent quality. If you're rocking Android or iOS then http://rpadtv.blip.tv should automatically redirect you to the mobile version. Please let me know if it doesn't. I don't know if it works on BlackBerry, but if someone wants to test that out I'd appreciate it.

      1. Necco Wafers are little pieces of chalk that old people try to pass off as candy to little kids. Necco wafers are almost the equivalent of eating mustard covered candy corn.

      2. i like those NILA wafer cookies, those are delicious….necco wafers taste almost as bad as peeps

    1. Nah dude I hate them as well, the Necco factory is located in Saugus or Revere MA, which is about a 20 min ride outside of Boston. New England Confectionery Company makes shitty wafers.

      1. all this talk about how these wafers suck make me want to go find some and try them out, so i can complain too.

    1. lol that's funny.

I have Dish network so I can watch Hornets games. They are locked into Cox Sports TV. I'm amazed that they don't show the games in HD ever. 3 games so far, none in HD. WTF?

    2. Here's DirecTV's official statement: "At this time we are no longer negotiating and we have no plans to put G4 back up. We are constantly evaluating our lineup in a new world where programming costs continue to rise at significant rates. Since G4 is among the lowest rated networks based on the latest Nielsen data, we decided that it made sense to focus on preserving programming that is more relevant to our larger customer base."

I was thinking of writing an article about the whole thing, but it would look funny considering what those people did to me. Between that and Billy getting fired from EGM, a lot of people have been asking for my thoughts on those situations. Instead, I give them my thoughts on The Situation.

      1. I think it speaks volumes about our society when The Situation can make $5 million this year for absolutely nothing. Welcome to America, where vapid entertainment rules all.

I'm assuming that was the situation you were talking about.
