Apple Announces October 20th 2010 “Back to the Mac” Presser

Apple has sent out invites to an October 20, 2010 press conference called “Back to the Mac”. The teaser image shows a lion behind the Apple logo, which indicates that the focus of the presser will be on the next version of Mac OS X. Tech writers expect that the new MacBook Air will be revealed as well. Some have speculated that the next version of Mac OS X will be the most radical yet, implementing all kinds of touch interface features.

Let’s do some speculating of our own! What do you think will be announced at the Apple presser? With the success of iOS and the recent introduction of the Magic Trackpad, do you think touch will become a large part of Mac OS X? Do you think the new MacBook Air — rumored to have an 11.6-inch screen — will be a convertible notebook that also works as a tablet?

  1. No I do not think the Air will be a convertible tablet. It wouldn't sell compared to the sub 1k iPad. I think the iPad really gobbled up the market for the Air. I look for it to be put out to pasture soon.

I know touch is coming to Mac OS but I do hope it isn't the dominant theme of the event. I like touch on portable devices but not on my computers necessarily. The trackpad on my MacBook is great, but I do not want to have my 27 inch screen become a touchscreen. That's too damn big. I have considered off and on about getting a magic trackpad for my iMac but in the end the mighty mouse is good enough. I don't know how the trackpad would make my interactions any better honestly.

I look forward to hearing about the new OS or maybe it will just be 10.7 however I fear that it will be at least another 6-12 months out after it is debuted.

I'd like to hear about updated video drivers since the newest WoW patch requires me to have 10.6.5 for some features. Telling no?

      1. The touch screen capabilities. It seems like the next logical step.

Granted, it would make upgrading rather difficult… but it could be cool as hell.

  2. A friend of mine pointed out that the invite is shaped like a Magic Trackpad, with two rounded corners and two squared ones.

Another friend was hoping that the new MacBook can dual-boot in Mac OS and iOS.
