Sony Details PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.40 Update

Sony Computer Entertainment America just sent out a press release with details on PS3 firmware update 3.40. The update includes the following:

  • PlayStation Plus: A new subscription service package on PlayStation Network, PlayStation Plus offers gamers exclusive services and content on June 29, 2010, worldwide. PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership* to PlayStation Plus, providing members with new options to enhance their gaming experience and enable them to gain a special set of features and content. All PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to its unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive content, services and community focused tools – including online game play – while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of evolving features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows PS3 users to upload, browse and comment on photos on sites such as Facebook and Picasa Web Album. PS3 users can also opt to share their photos between their PlayStation Network friends.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables users to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at two hours, providing users with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

The company is also updating its Facebook application. Here’s the skinny on that:

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application will be made available on Facebook Platform. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to share purchases from the PlayStation Store. Users can further integrate their PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows them to display their PlayStation Network profile on Facebook, find out which of their Facebook friends have a PlayStation Network account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view the PlayStation Network friends’ online status, and add the PlayStation Network application tab on their Facebook Profile.

As always, I’d love to hear what you think of these new features. Any of ’em have you excited?

  1. Wow a rating system for the store. I had never considered that but its a great idea.

I kinda like the FB integration, but I'd like to see what it really does first.

  2. alot of these pay features are features that RROD was bemoaning about paying for with XBL. Uploading to facebook? Trading pics? No thanks.

If I were a heavy gamer on my ps3, I'd consider the service if they could guarantee me better bandwidth. As it is it's going to take an hour or so to get this new firmware.

  3. @Smartguy

I agree with you there. PSN's bandwidth needs to be better for sure.

  4. give me some of your bandwidth! PSN is a dialup service as far as i'm concerned lol.

  5. It took me two hours to download and install a PSP game on Saturday. Thankfully it was worth the wait, but it was still ridiculous to wait that long for around 1GB of data.

  6. I have no problems with the PSN bandwidth. I spent Saturday loading up my new PS3 with all my downloads. I went through all 410 of my down loads and of those 177 were purchases that needed to be re download. Took about 12 hours to downloaded nearly 60Gb. Then I had to install all of it. Pain in the ass and now this 120gb hdd is half full.

  7. yeah really i know ive talked with rrod about this, hes in georgia, im in virginia

our bandwidth is fine here, and im not saying that because we were both in the sdf

  8. @smartguy

Actually that kinda true (also funny). Since I am on cable internet there are far fewer people to pull away from my bandwidth.

  9. I got firmware 3.40 last night around 10. I love Playstation Plus already.

Fat Roles cost $1 less for subscribers, as a matter of fact it shows you to price difference between the 2 on just about everything now. Lots of free games already and the star rating system is up.

I wish XBL would show the price difference between Gold and Silver. I didn't know until yesterday they even offered discounts to Gold subs. I honestly thought they just charged you $50 to play on the online

  10. I didn't get the update yet. I thought when rpad posted the article that it was up but when i got home around 530 it wasn't. I never turned on my ps3 for the rest of the night. I'll try it out later.
