Do You Care About Sitting Down and Using Xbox Kinect?

The Internets (there are several of them) have been buzzing about reports that Xbox Kinect doesn’t work while you’re sitting down. Some developers have said that it’s difficult for Kinect to track your skeleton while you’re sitting down. Microsoft has refuted this claim, saying that Kinect can work while you’re sitting down or standing up — it’s on a game-by-game basis.

Some writers are going nuts over the matter. Some have said that not being able to do simple things — navigating menus, for instance — while sitting down is a major flaw with Kinect. Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is and see it more as a minor nuisance than a major flaw. What do you guys and dolls think? Is it a deal breaker? Or are some people overreacting?

  1. well you can still use your controller right? If you can use your controller than i don't see what the big deal is.

  2. At the price point of $150 it is not worth it to simply use it as a dashboard controller whether you are sitting down or standing up. I really am not that excited about any games so far that use kinect, so all I would use it for is a controller-less controller. If you were using kinect to accompany a full retail game, then I would hope you could sit down and use everything properly otherwise that will be one very long game to play with a controller and kinect all while standing up.

  3. Ok, so it's got voice recognition, and people are worried about waving their hands at the menu screen?

    I mean, there aren't any early games for Kinect that I particularly want anyway…at least not until the Star Wars game comes out. But anyone who thinks you should sit down while being a Jedi is missing the point. Or is that supposed to be for those thrilling meditation scenes?

  4. So what you are telling me is that Microsoft hates people in wheelchairs?? What jerks…

  5. I just had visions of some moron trying to figure out how to play that Kinect dancing game while sitting down, getting pissed off about it and writing an article that says "Kinect is broken cause you can't sit and play."

  6. @nighshade

    Good point i forgot it has voice recognition. This makes their comments more whiny to me.

    No I don't care, its just a minor issue. And if you are actually going to by a Kinect I think you should already know that you won't be doing much sitting, and what Nightshade posted and what Tokz agreed to.

  8. Considering that playing games is something I do to relax… it makes a difference to me. Hell, I usually play games lying down.

  9. @n8r

    really?? you can play laying down? I tend to play worse when i'm laying down.

  10. @ tokz

    Hell yeah. I'm old. After years and years of aching leg muscles from jumping up and down and acting like a fool on stage the night before, I've grown accustomed.

    Sometimes I prop up my pillows, but I gotta stretch my legs out.

    I hear ya. I can't sit indian style (sorry if this offends anyone but i can't think of the actual name) or have my leg bent underneath the other one while i play anymore. Once i try to get up my knee gives out or cracks a lot. Getting old is lame. :(

  12. I sit about 5 feet from my TV in an office chair and if I am not thinking about it I will tuck one leg under me and sit, which I always regret when my knees feels like its going to fall off in a few hours. Occasionally after/during long gaming session I will stand up and sidle back and forth for a few minutes. Also if I am just getting downloads started I'll stand up the whole time.

    @Tokz

    Lol Indian Style. I think the PC term is cross-legged. I call it Indian style too. Also I was totally with Jessica Simpson on "Indian Giving" its just a word.

    @Topic

    I don't think it is that big of a deal. To the writers that are bitching: Do the motion controls that you designed and implemented work when sitting down? No. Case closed.

    Kinect does seem to be very buggy (bad character animation glitches) though and I hope they get it all worked out soon.

  13. I play laying down as well, not because I'm getting old (well I guess I am) but its super comfy. Most of the time I try to sit in an advantageous position for the future, the future of my flexibility. Cross legged, half tree, downward dog, all of it lol.

  14. @ Tokz

    No, lol, most of them are standing yoga positions but I modify them into my gaming time because who wants to stretch and not have fun?

  15. I'm not interested in standing and gaming "." I have every intent to try Child of Eden with Kinect, but there are no promises it will go farther than that.
