Today’s Poll: Will You Buy an Xbox 360 “Slim”?

Microsoft unveiled a new version of the Xbox 360 with a 250GB hard drive and WiFi. The design is smaller, uses less power, and is allegedly quieter than its forerunners. The design is angular and totally reminds me of Alienware desktop computers. It looks like a pretty sweet machine, but will you buy one this year? Take the poll and let me know (please)!

  1. I'll buy one but I doubt I get it this year. I want to wait until they get the bugs worked out. I have no faith in Microsoft build quality anymore, especially when they just fixed their last mistake.

  2. They just fixed their last mistake?

    I didn't know they scrapped Kinect so soon.

  3. Built-in WiFi sounds like one of those "FINALLY!" type winners to me…

    Thing is, I've been wanting a PS3 for a while now. It would be easier if I didn't have to trade off on the 360 with my siblings, though, so I think I'll hold out to see what Sony has to say at their event and then start thinking about my options all over again.

  4. @Iceman

    HAHAHA! I thought you were about to go on the MS defense team, but nope. haha

  5. Once I get the money for it (i.e. sell my old car) then I will be ordering one through the Amazon links off this site. Hoping the car sells soon so I can get the new 360.

  6. @ Slicky;

    I'll only defend a gaming company's console if it's perfect. And since it is impossible to create a perfect console, I will always (as a consumer) have my thoughts about how a gaming console could be better. Every company should always thrive to make a better console than the previous generation and its up to us to let them know how to do that.

    @ Bsukenyan;

    What car? (Make/Model)

    @ Topic;

    It really depends on the price and what I can get from the sale of my current consoles.

  7. @Iceman

    My old car is a 1993 Honda Del Sol Si 5 speed. I love driving that car, but the body is a little beat up. It is a two seater and because it is a little beat up so I need to upgrade to something I could (someday) actually show up to work in. I already got a great deal on my aunts old 2004 Saturn, now I just need to sell my Honda.

    @Shockwave

    For the most part I would feel the same about slim versions of consoles. But I really like the addition of the built in wi-fi and that it will come with a 250gb hdd. To me those are good enough additives, while staying at the same price, for me to want one.

  8. I need to know more about this HDD. I see none attached and will not by a built in console. I need to know I can change it. Going to go digging to find my answer now.

  9. @sandrock, I am thinking it has one, but they are showing it off without it to maintain the small profile. That or this machine will only use 16gb of flash memory. Crippled!

  10. Amazon failed me, but Gamestop has this to say,

    "The internal, removable 250GB hard drive offers plenty of space to save games, HD TV and movies, music, pictures, game add-ons, demos and more."

    Now I just need to find out if it is the PS3 removable hard drive kind. If so, I'm sold.

  11. Some interesting details,

    Kinect Ready: Kinect brings games and entertainment to life in extraordinary new ways – no controller required. Easy to use and instantly fun, Kinect gets everyone off the couch moving, laughing and cheering. See a ball? Kick it. Want to join a friend in the fun? Simply jump in. Even control an HD movie with a wave of the hand. Featuring a dedicated, specialized port, the Xbox 360 250GB is built to connect seamlessly with the Kinect Sensor.*

    More ports: Connect more accessories and storage solutions with added USB ports. Now with a total of 5, (3 back/2 front) you’ll find more places to plug and play. Plus, in addition to the standard Ethernet port and HDMI output, we’ve added an integrated optical audio out port for an easier connection to the booming sound of your A/V receiver.

  12. The "specialized port" and "connect seamlessly with the Kinect Sensor" may indicate that the current 360 will need something to bridge between the Kinect cord and the 360.

  13. hehe, i wonder if it will be included with the Kinect or an extra part you have to buy?

  14. @iceman

    So if you buy a new slim machine your old HDD doesn't fit…are they going to give you a xfer cable? I bet it isn't easy to switch to a new machine.

  15. @ smartguy

    Microsoft finally created a patch a while back that allows usage of flash drives to store data… maybe they'll just expect everyone to transfer data that way? That's probably what I would do instead of trying to deal with whatever method they would suggest.

  16. @ Smartguy;

    There have not been any official word about the "backwards compatibility" of the older HDDs, but I speculated that there would be a transfer cable to move your data from your older HDD to the newer one, just like you said on post #19.

    The new flash drive storage option would help out in this regard, however, if I'm not mistaken, the data is capped at 16 GB. That would be enough for me since I have the old 20 GB HDD that came with my console, but what about those who have the 60 or 120 GB HDDs? You know what a pain in the arse it would be to get all of that data from one console to the other. Worst case scenario is that you have to transfer data from your old machine to your new machine eight times. Not exactly efficient.

  17. @iceman

    I don't have the problem eventhough I have a 120gb HDD. I don't buy from their digital store, so a bulk of my data is installed games and demos I have never deleted.

  18. @Safari users

    Anyone having any problems using youtube or loading any kind of video on safari 5? I can't get anything to load. Damn you safari 5!

  19. @Storage

    XBLA games should be able to just be re-downloaded on to any new system, correct? For me at least that should take care of the bulk of what needs to be transfered from hdd to hdd. More space on my hdd is taken up by downloading games on to it so that they will play quieter and more smoothly, if this new 360 is as good as it claims then that probably won't be as much of a necessity. The point being that I don't care if those don't transfer or not because it shouldn't take too long to redo those on a new 360.

    The only thing that I can see being a hassle to transfer is any other downloaded content, which I avoided in general because I don't like how it is in a specific non-transferable format and how it can only be played on my 360. etc. If you can use a 16gb flash drive than that should not be too hard to transfer just downloaded media from one place to another.

  20. @Smartguy

    I am not surprised that people are having problems with it. My school sent out emails recently saying that if you want to be able to access some of the schools resources for classes and stuff that you had to keep safari 4 because safari 5 was not compatible with a bunch of the applications we use here at BSU.

  21. @bsukenyan I believe you have to manually reacquire the rights to all your downloads. That just takes a couple of seconds per download. I'm not sure if that process has changed, but that's what I had to do last year when my Elite red ringed.

  22. @Safari Users

    I got it figured out. I had to repair my disk in order for it to resolve itself. DiskUtility – first aid – repair.

  23. As far as it goes, I read earlier (I think on Game Informer's site) that data transfer can be done with flash drives or with the data transfer kit Microsoft will be selling for $20.

  24. @ BSU

    Once you buy the new Xbox, you can then call MS and they will send you a transfer kit for free.

    As for redownloading, I think since the console has a new console ID, it would be a negative. Because if that was the system, what would stop me from giving you the password to my gamertag, and then you could "redownload" all my games? A few cycles of doing that, and everyone has every Arcade game for free.

  25. The video they put on the dashboard has a close up of the new HDD, but it's still in the console… Still waiting on one of these people to actually open the console Microsoft gave them at the presser and give us real facts.

    Rights transfer is easy. All you do is go to xbox.com and use your once a year rights transfer. I think a 2gb flash drive will be plenty to transfer the important data. Even with my half full 120gb, I know 90% of that can just be redownloaded. All you really need is your save data and that takes up very little space.

  26. Also, the current transfer cable works just fine as you are transferring from the old HDD style. Engadget pulled out the HDD and it is enclosed in a case. Not sure what the means exactly, but probably proprietary.

  27. i remember when rays elite crapped out on him, he did a 10 part editorial documentary over at the feed…there were crazy yellow bars onscreen or something…those were great articles

  28. I am looking forward to the new PS3 unveil today now. Its supposed to also include wireless N.

    BTW does anyone here have a wireless N router yet? My Wireless G is doing just fine, no need to upgrade.

  29. @slicky

    i was about to ask the same thing…is wireless N really necessary on a ps3?

  30. i hate to sound like a hypocrite, because ive bashed natal–er i mean kinect…but im all over everything sony is going to unveil…if that psp2 with the quad core processor is really what they are saying its gonna be, its gonna be MINE…also, im going to buy move

    I promise i will buy both through amazon, as i have been lazy with my amazon purchases lately

  31. I doubt the new 360 just needed built in wireless, not really a need for the N there either. So I guess now I will have a $100 wireless adapter to sell. So anyone who bought the MS camera, its now obsolete, also if you bought the wireless adapter, and if you bought the HD drive. THANKS MICROSOFT FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!!!

  32. oops. I didn't mean to say DOUBT, I had changed my thought and forgot to take it out

  33. @Thunder

    it not being a hypocrite…..its being a fanboy. jk

    I actually feel the same after watching MSs conference yesterday. I guess now that MS has showed their HAND its now Playstation's MOVE.

  34. @Rpad – I just took my HDD over to a friends house and put it in an extra console without any issues. Booted up just like it was mine.

    Although the new (still proprietary) HDD in the 360 Slim (is that the real name?) isn't compatible with old HDDs. so you'd need to use the data transfer cables that are still compatible

  35. Via twitter

    "XboxSupport @Sandrock323 The 360 S comes with a 250gb hard drive, and that is currently the only hard drive that is compatible with it ^JG"

    and my question

    " Sandrock323 @XboxSupport Can we use any HDD with the new 360s or do we have to buy official ones? Try to decide whether to upgrade. "

  36. @shockwave

    I stopped taking my 360 over to my friends house because of that feature. I just pack my hdd now. That is one area where MS completely beats PS. I wish I could just drop my PS Fat's drive in my new Slim and then I would be super happy.

  37. @Shockwave

    The issue comes with some things. I bought a background once on a different console using my HDD and it wouldn't work on my console because it was tied to the other console.

  38. @slicky

    yeah as everyone knows, im a recovering fanboy..im workin on it

    but i dont play my xbox on live at ALL, im actually thinking about getting it flashed, because im not worryed about my console getting banned from a service that i never use

  39. @ray

    two questions…is the sony presser first? Also, what time is it? This is killing me here, i may have to stay up till like 3 pm…yikes!!

  40. That HDD thing can be a pain. A friend of mine brought his hdd over Sunday so he could install Alan Wake seeing as his xbox put a perfectly round scratch on his copy. He took it home and he couldn't play the game because the install was done on my machine eventhough the hdd was his.

    This install method has worked for me a few times. My L4D got ringed so I borrowed a friend's copy and installed using my xbox and hdd. Then I would simply put in my readable but non playable copy so the xbox would see there is a legit copy and voilà.

    I think how they lock crap down is ridiculous.

  41. so 3pm est?

    yeah screw that, i gotta be at work at 1030 pm

    thank you though

  42. @Ray

    Hopefully the process has not changed then and it is still easy. I think once my car sells there should be an order for one of these through the amazon links. I wish the car would sell today!!

    @N8R

    That does make sense what you said about re-downloading a game and getting it for free for many people. But I would think there would also be something that checks that it is my gamertag re-downloading a game that I had previously downloaded on a different machine.

  43. I'm thinking I need to get an achievement for 2G for a minute so I can be rockin' a 22,222 gamerscore. I would need to find one that ends in a 3 though soon after so that not having it end in a 5 or 0 wouldn't drive me crazy (for no good reason other than I know it would). haha.

  44. @thundercracker

    tell me about it i can't figure that crop tool to save my life! but you're avatar looks great!

  45. wow, i forgot that i had posted that link already

    i work nights, im tired

  46. @Thunder

    Yeah I was always tired too when I used to work nights…fun stuff. Got boring as hell for me.

  47. Xbox 360 S might have to be put on hold now, my car just quit working on me so I'm not sure when I can sell it or part it out or what I'm gonna do with it now…but right now it seems like no money will come out of it right away. Fingers are crossed!
