Coffee Talk #156: What Would Make You Enjoy Motion Controls?

Perhaps this is a lost cause, but I’m going to go ahead and do it anyway. I mean, I know most of you guys hate motion controls. A lot of you dismiss them as gimmicky and limited. I maintain that they can be lots of fun in the rights hands (I’m talking about developer’s hands, not your hands or Reona Rewis’ hands).

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Ray Allen lighting up the Lakers last night, tonight’s three-hour episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, or what the hell happened to Mark Teixeira, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Do you see a way for you to enjoy motion-control games? Perhaps a particular developer or genre would work better for you? Maybe you have a great motion-control experience in your head and haven’t seen a game that executes it properly. Share your thoughts on motion (please)! Do you see a way that Wii, Natal, or Wave can be fun for you personally?

  1. Yeah if they were anything like out of Minority Report and how the computers worked there. But more importantly if motion controls weren't the only thing used to control a game. If motion controls are used in addition to a standard controller in a way that created an efficient gaming experience. Mostly I think they are just a gimmick though because they don't add anything new to how game controls work. If they really added something new and useful then I would probably be on board. I hope one day that they can be useful though.

  2. PS3 – okay

Sure. I am digging what the Move has to offer. I like their demos so far. Sports games should be very cool with it. I like the sword-n-shield gimmick (up until I try it though I am sure). I know I'll enjoy bowling. At least they incorporated a little or what the Wii is and what Natal promises to be.

    Wii – done

I haven't used a Wii since the motion plus came out so I don't know what it is capable of now, but before it sucked before with action games where you didn't actually have to imitate anything but rather just "shake it like a Polaroid picture". Games like Boom Blox were fun but sometimes the IR would glitch and screw things up. I think the Wii has hit its limit.

    Natal/Wave – gimmicky

I don't know what to think here. Driving games are going to suck. Seriously hold your arms out for 30 minutes and pretend you are driving a car. They keep showing people doing this for less than 2-3 each. I like the voice recognition, which makes me stoked for so trivia. I just can't get past this being anything more than another PSEye. I want to wowed by this but so far it has been a let down. Also where is Milo now days?

  3. I think something like the Vitality Sensor except a little bigger, warmer, and squishy would help.

  4. @ N8R

YES!!! If that is the case I'm all over it, and it would be a one time expense!

  5. not really sure, I enjoy motion controls in some senses but not always. Honestly Super Mario Galaxy is one of the best games I've played this year, I've really enjoyed it.

On the other hand most motion games are shovelware. Once Nintendo is not the sole company in charge of motion we could see improvements.

  6. @slicky

i havent even thought of trivia as a possibility for natal…i guess that would be kinda cool

  7. I've play Twilight Princess and it was good, but nothing I couldn't have used a controller for. That is my problem with motion consuls, they offer new ways to play games and not new game mechanics you can't do with a normal controllers. So far Natal has me as far as best motion controls go. It is more interactive than others and actually offers new ways to play new game concepts. I see Fable leading this and it not going anywhere out side of that though. The bigger plus is that you can still use your controller with Natal, so Natal can be used to enhance your gaming experience and not just rebrand it with new controls.
