Legendary Pictures Acquires Rights to Mass Effect Movie

Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to make a Mass Effect movie and is negotiating with Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) to write the film’s script. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Legendary Pictures has picked up rights to Mass Effect, the Electronic Arts-BioWare video game. Mark Protosevich, the scribe who wrote I Am Legend and worked on Thor, is in talks to pen the movie, which will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad as well as Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni.

I’m thrilled that a BioWare game is going to become a movie. Considering how broad the game is, there are so many ways Protosevich can go with the movie. What would you want the Mass Effect movie to focus on? Any casting ideas?

  1. I have concerns about how you fit a 40 hour game into a 2 hour movie. I'm hopeful that it turns out well though.

  2. @Nightshade

If they can put 40 years of comics into a 2 hour movie then I'm sure a 40 game would be no trouble. Just leave out the farming.

  3. @Ray: The main plot w/ Saren make the most sense. You'd have to seriously streamline Feros, Noveria and a lot of the stuff on the Citadel.

@RROD: I don't recall ever seeing a comic book movie that focused on more than one or two comic books worth of content. And considering you can bust through your average comic book in 15 minutes, that's not a very valid comparison.

  4. @Nightshade386 No way dude! I spend at least an hour reading a single issue. :P I flip back a lot, examine panels closely to see what's going on in the background, etc.

  5. @Ray: ::shrug:: I have a pretty absurd collection myself, and it takes me 15-20 minutes to read each one.

  6. @RROD: Ok, so you're going to use the example of the worst comic book movie this decade (which pretty much killed the franchise) to prove your point? I know we could argue Spiderman 3 here as well, which falls victim to the same problem. When you cram too much stuff into one movie, it doesn't work. When you streamline the storyline and stick to one villain, it does.

  7. Gotta add Ghostrider and Daredevil to that decade list. Elektra was bad but better.

  8. Oh, god, X3 had to be one of the worst pieces of garbage that I have ever have the displeasure of paying to see. I actually TRIED to keep track of all of the story lines they Frankensteined together in that mess, but I lost count because numbers don't go that high.

I'm a HUGE X-men fan and I couldn't make heads or tails of that trash.

(*urghk*) I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

  9. @ Smartguy;

I'll take Ghostrider over Daredevil any day and I'll gladly watch BOTH movies back-to-back over X3 and Spiderman 3.

The trick to making Ghostrider and Daredevil more pleasant to watch is to close your eyes and pretend you're watching "The Notebook". It lessens the pain. Also, tazing yourself helps as well.

  10. I think though, if you look at the BETTER comic book movies you'll see the way to handle a video game movie. Streamline, don't oversaturate. If you don't give all the storylines the proper room to breathe, they'll all fail together.

  11. How about a new character that plays a role in the background of the games story arch. uwuw, they could do a movie on Garrus before the first game while he was at C-Sec, or after the first movie when he has gone rouge. You are Shepperd, so they can have a movie about him. It just won't work.
