Coffee Talk #145: What Will You Play Games on in the Future?

At a recent financial results briefing, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, “We do not think that the combination of a game system and dedicated software will last forever.” As we all know, nothing lasts forever…even cold November rain. Seriously though, I found it terribly interesting that Iwata was completely candid about consoles eventually going the way of the dodo. If Nintendo — which sells tens of millions of systems every year — can admit this then shouldn’t we be wondering what’s next?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, tomorrow’s excellent boxing card on HBO, Google I/O, or Captain Carrot, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

What do you think you’ll be playing games on ten years from now? Surely you don’t think the disc-and-box combination will still be around, do you? Perhaps systems like OnLive and Gaikai are glimpse of what the future holds. Maybe you’ll be plugging controllers directly into your television, which will stream games to you in the blink of an eye. Will game pads have even more buttons? Or will motion controls be so advanced that even intricate games will be easily controllable through hand gestures?

Put on your thinking caps (fact: I never owned a thinking cap) and share your vision of gaming’s future (please)!

  1. Cybernetic implants that help you play thought controlled games.

Speaking of boxing… how about Ricardo Mayorga making his MMA debut this weekend?

I've always been a mark for Mayorga. That dude had no idea what a jab was. All of his punches had some serious power behind them.

  2. I could see the Steam model (ie, PC model) being the end game solution. An account in which you pay for the game, and you can play it on any device the game will run on. No dedicated hardware from a specific manufacturer. Steam is the best digi service out there. That includes ITunes. Steam puts products on sale, and discounts older titles. It's the way it should be. Imagine that? Someone throwing a bone to the consumers even when there is no serious competition on their platform!

What I don't think will work is a monthly fee simply to access what you have already purchased. HDDs are becoming so large, I don't have to worry about filling them up with games. Maybe I will still buy a disc in order to load it on my machine quicker as opposed to a 5-10 hour download of an HD title.

All this doesn't matter though. Cataclysm will probably drop in November….and I won't care about what is released on consoles then. Then next year Diablo 3 comes out and I will buy a new iMac just for that game.

  3. I have a feeling that the games will come direct through your cable box, much like on demand movies. I'm already filled w/ contempt just thinking about this because I hate the idea of not actually owning the things I buy and being at the mercy of the internet to play something.

  4. N8R beat me to what I was going to suggest…*shakes fist in general direction*…but something like what he said. Something where everything is thought based and is played within the confines of your own mind. Same with all computer activity, meaning you really don't want your computer hacked then, haha.

I have seen that all as part of the future ever since I read a bunch of those Tom Clancy's Net Force books for kids a long time ago and that is kind of how it worked in the books. They still had a machine that they hooked in to, but it was all visual and thought based.

    @Nightshade

Will the games come through your cable box? Or your tv through your game box? With some of the rumors about Microsoft talking to television networks to bring tv to a premium gold membership it seems like it would be the latter not the former. I also completely agree with the contempt for not owning the things that I buy, as much as I love netflix right now I still would rather just be able to afford everything that I watch to own instead of just rent and have to pay for on a monthly basis (or switch emails for every month to use a free month trial for each email I have…).

  5. Love the Guns N Roses reference.

as far as the future of gaming, ever since I was a kid I fantasized about video games that worked like the Holo Deck on Star Trek… ya I'm a nerd, but you have to admit it would be cool.

or something like the matrix where you jack in… feels real and yet none of the consequences… imagine a grand theft auto like that….

  6. I also see a ridiculous sub model for individual titles. I will say it now, I refuse to sub a game on a p2p connection (xbox live) . MMOs are worth the sub in my opinion but I use my own computer and play on their server. I'm talking about subs of MW and Madden.

  7. @shockwave

Be honest, I'd you had a holodeck how often would you play the playboy mansion party game? Or DOA beach volleyball?

  8. I agree with most comments already posted. The games will either be able to be streamed via a set top box from the companies or you'll get it straight to your tv. I don't think cable or satellite will get involved with this too many service interruptions or lack of quality service from certain providers is the down fall.

    @hbo boxing card

It looks to have potential but i'm not a fan of either. If i had to choose i'd go with Khan via KO maybe the 8 or 9th. I can't stand Paulie.

    Who is Capt. Carrot???

  9. there was an episode of star trek the next generation where data decides he wants to be sherlock holmes, thought that was pretty awesome. Ive always enjoyed the Brent Spiner

    anywho….

as ray has always said, in order for cloud gaming to really take off, internet speeds will have to increase dramatically, and hard drives will have to approach 5-10 tb levels in order for me to feel comfortable with going disc free

  10. @N8R In general I'm a fan of smoking athletes. Mayorga, Yannick Noah, Rod Beck, etc.

@tokz_21 I also hate Malginaggi. I should like him. He's a New Yorker and starred in the Punch-Out!! commercials…but he's such a tool.

@thundercracker I actual met Brent Spiner and Levar Burton at Smith & Wollensky's steak house in Las Vegas. It was cool seeing them eat together and fun chatting with them after they were done.

  11. @slicky

hey man, its coffee talk, there is no topic homeslice

but sadly, no i do not know anything of this k2 license you speak of

  12. @Thunder

Yeah I know, but I just felt awkward about throwing it out there. It is "legal" pot. Legal for know anyways. I read some stuff about it online, but was wondering if anyone had tried it. Reason is I just bought some at a tobacco shop.

  13. @ Ray

If I were in your shoes that day… I probably wouldn't have been able to not call Lavar Burton "Toby".

"Read a book Toby, I'm talking to Data."

  14. @Rpad – that's a pretty cool story.

@thunder – that's a good episode, I too would get a kick out of playing the famous detective if I had a holodeck.

  15. i see what he did there…..i would have just said….

"settle down there, reading rainbow, im talking to data"

yours is still better, it always is

  16. @ Mr. Padilla;

If that was me, I would have had a total nerdgasam. I'm a huge ST:TNG fan. I swear, I never have any luck when I go to Vegas. I go there rich and healthy and I leave poor and with the clap.

    @ topic;

I know it's a pipe dream, but I would LOVE to play games with the kinds of computer interfaces used by Tony Stark in Ironman 2 and Tom Cruise in Minority Report. That's what Nintendo should be working on.

  17. @N8R Kunta…his name is Kunta Kinte!

@Iceman I've been totally okay meeting people from movies, TV, and music. The one time I really spazzed out was when I interviewed Stan Lee. That was almost too much to handle, but I got it together at the last second.

I would also love to have a PDA/phone with a Stark Solutions interface. That would be awesome.

  18. @iceman

Stop being cheap and go to the good places…..might avoid that clap. Lol.

  19. @iceman

I almost forgot about Minority Report! I really liked that movie, and those computers would be awesome to play with.

  20. @ Ray

    Well I call him Toby.

Stan Lee would have geeked me out too. Those are the kind of people that get to me as well. The people who create huge things… innovators. I've met several famous musicians including my personal idols and out of everyone music related that I met, the person who geeked me out the most was Jim Marshall (inventor and proprietor of Marshall Amplification). THAT… is a great man.

  21. @Ray

I am fixing to pull the trigger on a 27inch iMac with the i7 processor. I can't resist and I am wanting a larger screen than my 13inch MB. Perhaps new pics to come!

  22. @smartguy They're pretty awesome. I'd get one if I could afford it. I'm also interested in the MacBook Air refresh that's supposedly coming this summer.

  23. @Ray and N8R

Apple would not sell the machine to me at their store. My Amex wouldn't work (though I used it for dinner and paid summer tuition with it not an hour earlier) and since the check was going to be for 2200, their POS wouldn't take it. Guess I will have to order from the site and play cat and mouse with FedEx.

I went to Bestbuy to see if their kiosk would have one….the damn salesman (an official apple one) tried to convince me to buy the core 2 duo since it was the same thing as the i5. To be honest, I'd settle for an i5. However this guy had no clue what he was talking about. He didn't understand that on top of the new chip tech that I also wanted a larger GPU.

Maybe I'll go back by the Apple store tomorrow and try again. Right now I'm kinda pissed though.

  24. damn it padilla

i totally didnt see that…beat me to it

    *shakes fists angrily*

  25. @ray

i noticed that that computer i just posted a link for has a 1 tb sata hard drive…will this fit in a ps3?

do they make 1tb hds for a ps3 yet?

  26. @thundercracker Most 2.5-inch drives will work with a PS3. There are some 1TB drives, but the ones released last summer were a little big for the PS3. I'm not sure if the latest models are the more standard size, but I'd guess so.

  27. Yes, that actually reminds me of that delectable Asian dish I had yesterday called "Padilla's special ass whooping". I must say I did not care for the taste at all. Between N8, my wife, a dictionary and thesaurus, you still beat us by more than 100 points.

Oh, enjoy it while you can, because I shall arrange for my friend John (who graduated Magna Cum) from Harvard (and local literary genius) to play in my stead in a future Scrabble match. Until then, consider my resolve to take down the Scrabble Shark as solidified.

P.S.- On the bright side, I did manage to learn that “dildoe” and “oi” are actually words, so the educational experience is well worth it.

  28. @rpad.tv

Do you think desktops are irrelevant? I'm starting to wonder if instead of a 27inch imac if I should just get an equivalent laptop. Id like to get as many opinions as possible.

    Possible poll Ray?

  29. @Smartguy

I love having my laptop to be able to take with me, but I still want a desktop to have as a base to set up a home network later in my life whenever I can get around to building my own. But that is the thing, I want to build it, and it doesn't have to be amazingly fast (I would rather have that for my laptop) but I don't know anything about building a mac desktop.

  30. @bsu

I already have a 13inch machine. That sways me to the desktop. It's a tougher decision than I thought. I love taking the machine with me but I need some screen real estate. I guess what it boils down to is 17 vs 27

  31. @rpad

maybe all those cards are taking up space in their warehouse and they really need the space.
