The buzz on Android 2.2 (aka FroYo) is that most of its improvements are under-the-hood performance gains and not flashy new features. If the tests conducted by Android Police are accurate then the performance increase will be extraordinary, largely due to an improvemend JIT (just-in-time) compiler. Using the Linpack tool, the site reported a 450 percent increase over Android 2.1 on a Google Nexus One:
Think about this for a second. 37.6, compared to 6.5-7 — that’s about a 450% speed improvement.
These results are so impressive, most likely due to the introduction of the long awaited JIT compilation into the kernel, that we felt they deserved immediate attention.
That’s pretty sick, hey? Hopefully I’ll be seeing Android FroYo in action next week at Google I/O.
I was considering getting a Nexus One for AT&T, but I thought it might already be showing its age. So I didn't know if I should wait for something new or get it.
@SlickyFats I don't think it's showing its age at all. Its 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is totally current, as are the screen tech and resolution. It's a very good phone and probably the best Android choice on AT&T. The things I don't like about it are the stupid trackball and average camera quality.
@Ray
Maybe this is what I have been looking for. The camera has to be better than my Bold's 1.2 Mp camera and I use a trackball everyday. I am just looking for something newer. Can you tether with the Nexus One? That is my main criteria after that I'd like a real keyboard and then a touch screen is last. BB has made me realize how little you need a touch screen.
@SlickyFats Yes, you can tether with the Nexus One. I tried an app called Easy Tether and it worked brilliantly. Some people prefer PDAnet.
Sweet then I am all over it.
So how does the T-Mobile deal work. Could I get the phone for the $179 and sign a contract and then pay the early termination fee of $175 and take the phone to AT&T? I am sure my plan has a fatal flaw in somewhere.
@SlickyFats I'm not sure why you'd do that. T-Mobile uses different 3G bands than AT&T. The Nexus One is available with AT&T's bands.
I was looking to save a few hundred on it. But I guess that means it wouldn't work out to well for me. I figured $179 + $200 cancellation fee (i just looked theirs up) = $379 as opposed to the $579 from Google.
oops $529 from google
@slicky
My gf and i are thinking about heading to Dallas for maybe Labor day weekend. How far is that from Denison. I google map'd it but looks can be deceiving especially in Texas. Maybe we can rent a car and go eat at your Pop's diner.
@Tokz
We are about an hour north of Dallas (73ish miles). And that would be fantastic.
@slicky
oh ok that's not bad. I drive like 50 miles a day to and from work. I'll start looking into things to see and deals for Dallas. I'll let you know. Thanks.
cant wait to get 2.2 on my hero!!….in 2013
