Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Mosley/Mayweather 24/7, your batting average being higher than Mark Teixeira’s, or losing iPhone prototypes at a bar, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
To be completely honest, this edition of Coffee Talk is 30% self serving. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Amazon currently has some great deals on magazines — including some “buy-one-year-get-two-years deals. If there’s anything there that interests you, a subscription would really help out the site. That said, I’m also genuinely curious to learn what kind of magazines you ladies and gents read.
I subscribe to a bunch of magazines…but don’t read most of them since the Internet keeps me filled with info. I have ESPN: The Magazine, mainly for “Insider” access. I read Entertainment Weekly to keep up with pop culture. The books I receive, but usually don’t get to include Tennis, Interview, GQ, and The Atlantic. All of those subs are Internet specials that cost a few dollars. The sole gaming magazine I receive is Game Informer; EIC Andy was nice enough to put me on the comp list and I’m friends with a bunch of those guys, so it’s nice to read their work.
Now it’s your turn! What magazines do you read regularly?
Game Informer is the only one I receive in the mail. I do read a bit of Popular Science, Maximum PC, and a verity of gun magazines while I wait for people to get done grocery shopping. Even then, most of those I don't even read a 25% of what is in them. GI is the only exception because I read most of it. I have been known to buy other Video game magazines if they have interviews, or exclusive info on games I'm interested in.
I don't read any magazines. i just go around the internet and read whatever interests me. It's better for me, before when i bought magazines i would just read a couple of articles and that was it. Since then i just go to their websites and read whatever is available on their site.
Mad magazine, game informer, intouch and good house keeping (the last two are jokes). But you hit it on the button I gets mosts ofs my infos offs the internets!
None. I carry a laptop and an Iphone. No need to clutter my day by flipping through a magazine.
This has to be the biggest waste of time and money ever. Why in the hell does the gov't feel the need to do this??
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,591285,00.htm…
I guess being a responsible adult is too old school for the new America? (this includes the America of the last 2 decades). I used to smoke, but I quit. Nobody told me to, I did it for better health. I love fried seafood, but will only eat it once every 2 months or so. WTF??
@smartguy
This is what America is becoming now. Everything has be spoon fed to them because no one bothers to take responsibility for their own actions.
@smartguy
There is no point. Even if they passed it, it would change anything. Most restaurants have cut the amount of salt in their foods already and when was the last time you bought a frozen diner that had any salt in it. So glad they have nothing better to do than come up with pointless laws with no need or effect.
@smartguy Aren't there some European nations that have outlawed trans fat?
@Ray
Denmark did I know. I remember hearing about that. I just think it is ridiculous. How stupid can you be if you need Uncle Sam ( or Euro equivalent) telling you what to eat and how much to eat? There is so much info available that this stuff is so ridiculous.
@smartguy Isn't that a broader societal problem? There's tons of information out there on a broad variety of topics, my a lot of people don't use it to form knowledge.
@ Smartguy
They passed a law like that in CA some time ago. I thought it was ridiculous then and fries in PA tasted way better.
If high blood pressure rates went down here in CA, then that shows precedent. Also, there's always salt on the table that you can add to whatever you're eating at the same time.
And… I doubt it's true… only because it came from the entertainment source that is Fox News.
@Ray
So because some users can't disseminate easy information, choose to ignore it, or are just plain obtuse to the info we need a law or mandate that spreads to everyone? I know transfat is bad, I read about it from many different sources. Unlike broadband or other services and goods…there are MANY options when it comes to your diet. Being an adult means being responsible. Before it is said, I don't think they should hide behind the notion that this is for the kids….that is what a responsible parent is for.
I know I will sound like a nut job with this, but I said it months ago…if they passed healthcare, they would then start measures to eliminate certain things. Salt today, I guess soft drinks are next. Cigarettes after that.
@ Smartguy
I take you're against the socialist institutions known as the FDA and the USDA as well.
@smartguy I see both sides of the matter, honestly. People should be able to choose for themselves. There are also people that are so stupid that someone needs to choose for them.

@Ray
This will sound harsh, but stupid people will continue to make dumb decisions even with crap like this. I don't care about stupid people. We have more and more stupid people because we take care of them.
@N8R
Benchmarks for cleanliness are one thing, the USDA should only stick to that. The FDA is a crock.
Also the state of CA should not be used as an example of what to follow. The state is in the hole more than any other state in this country. Following that lead will indeed bankrupt the whole country.
@smartguy You do have a point. Darwinism and all that (or the teachings of Apocalypse if you're an X-Men fan). It reminds me of this married couple that I'm friends with. They're both smart and excellent people…but they don't want to have kids. I've been trying — for years — to convince them that it's their duty to the human race to produce smart offspring that will counteract the idiots.
@Ray
Makes me think of the opening of "Idiocracy" and what the dumb son tells all the cheerleaders. If you haven't seen that movie, please do.
@ Smartguy
The state of CA is not in the hole because of a lower salt count in the food. Nor is it in the hole because of emissions standards.
If you want to generalize like that though, I guess the entire state of Louisiana is full of swamp dwelling drunks that throw beads at women because they can't see breasts any other time.
Dude, straight up… if you got so much of a problem… run for office. See how far you get. Dude, you might just win.
@N8R
Don't state that law working in Cali is a precedent. That state is so different than the rest, data from there can't be applied to the rest. No, that state isn't in the hole over salt intake…but environmental laws and state and teachers unions seem to really be putting the hurt on state coffers.
A good bit of the state is full of swamp dwelling drunks in some areas. South of the Atchafalaya basin and stretching in to Lake Charles.
@ N8;
I'm one step ahead of you. I've already printed out the "Smartguy 4 Senate" shirts and buttons that hasve a cartoon woman eagerly flashing her boobs while beads get thrown her way.
… because sex sells.
@ Smartguy;
Look no further for your campaign manager. Just look what I did for Marco Rubio!

@ Fox News Link & All
Im going to take the other side on this one. I think that would be great! Not all people have many options as to what they eat. I babysat my cousins a few months ago and their parents are really poor and it hit me like a ton of bricks. All these kids wanted to eat was nuggets, noodles, ice cream, and koolaid. These kids have no concept of healthy food and drinks. Yes it is the fault of the parent but it is also the cheaply made mass produced low cost poison that is pumped and pushed in poorer communities. So the government regulating the amounts of poison is a good thing to me. Why is OK for a company to put an absurd amount of unhealthy chemicals in their products? It isn't. I hate the feds just as much as the next guy but they are truly doing it for the people, finally.
Side note
A couple of years ago the USDA also approved cloned meat for the American public!
@iceman
Thankyou.
@Iceman
You do realize that my backwards state is probably going to have an ex porn star running for US Senate? Stormy Daniels.
I might have to move to Cali and chill with N8R. At least they got Arnold.
@ Smartguy
First off, there's a huge difference between So Cal and Nor Cal. CA (as a whole) is a huge state with a dense population. It's different than the rest because of the "experimental" laws that are passed. Look at the history of national laws and see the ones that passed in CA first. Whether or not it should be like that… I'm not the one you should argue with about that. Don't shoot the messenger, dude.
Second, I really didn't mean that about LA. I don't generalize like that. I find it wrong.
@ Smartguy
Wait a minute…. Stormy DOESN'T do porn anymore???
@N8R
I was serious about what I said about the drunks. I am not acting as if my state is holier than thou….only aholes from Georgia do that.
I get Game Informer in the mail. Otherwise I just pick up stuff randomly that interests me.
@N8R
No, I don't believe she does. To be honest I'd never heard of her before she started generating buzz about running for a US Senate seat. When I did hear of it…well you know…I had to research her background. Good stuff….
So far in this thread…nobody mentioned Playboy magazine. I'm surprised.
@Smartguy: Nobody "reads" Playboy.
@Nightshade
Damn…the topic does say "read" in it. haha.
This is funny:

@ Smartguy
I know she was a Vivid contract girl… and I'm pretty sure she was at the AVN's this year.
@N8R
No clue. Though to be quite honest, I don't remember the word retired being attached to her in any form. pun intended.
@ Smartguy
My bad… she's contracted by Wicked… not Vivid.
According to Wiki, she dropped out on April 15 because she couldn't afford to run for Senate….
You should run instead.
@N8R
I appreciate the endorsement. Sadly I have to decline. No interest at this time in life and I'm not a who's who family.
INTERNET KILLED THE MAGAZINE STAR!!!!
You have to be over 30 to get that one^^^
@N8R
Nothingville is great. Thanks.
@ RROD
Im 24 and video killed the radio star!
@ All

@Big Blak

@ Smartguy
Hell yeah it is… and no problem.
@ RROD
I'm old enough to know that that song was performed by the Buggles.

@topic
I get rolling stone and I sometimes get Game Informer…I got a subscription, but I only seem to get every other issue or so. sometimes there are gaps of three or four magazines that just don't come in the mail. I need to send something in about that, but I just keep putting it off. Ok now I feel a little motivated to that. lol
Oh, I sometimes read Nintendo Power , OXM, and PSM for very specific articles. The over all quality of these magazines aren't worth buy often, but I do read the ones opened on the magazine rack.
Also, the magazine racks seem to have like no gaming magazines these days. I'm lucky if there is a Nintendo Power at the store and they always put them in the teen section. PC magazines are just as rare too. That's the main reason why I read gun magazines. They're the only magazines left that I can read with mild interest as 90% of their magazines are gossip and beauty magazines. Seriously, who is buying 12 different body building magazines each time they go to the store? There is no way they could be that successful in THIS country.
