Today’s Poll: Final Fantasy XIII vs. Heavy Rain

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII and Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain are two of the most polarizing games released in years. FFXIII is a drastic departure from the traditional JRPG style of the series and fans are torn over the gameplay style. It’s definitely different, but the production values are insanely good (minus Reona Rewis). Heavy Rain also has gamers split. Some can’t stand its gameplay style, while others view it as a landmark in interactive storytelling.

Today I wanted to see which game is more polarizing to you. Make your choice in the poll and explain your answer in the comments section if you have time.

  1. I actually liked FFXIII, despite it being quite different from your standard FF game. I think it helps that the game keeps a high energy pace throughout. I only played the demo for Heavy Rain, but the pace was really slow for the most part and I a lot of the "gameplay" was totally mundane.

I do understand why you feel it's fair to compare the two games as they both have very minimal actual gameplay. I just felt like what was there in FFXIII was executed in a better way for my tastes.

  2. Heavy Rain engaged me more and I felt connected to the characters. I could give a rat's ass about Lightening, Hope or the rest of that group.

  3. I haven't played either of them, but I can't bring myself to vote for an FF game no matter what.

  4. I have played both and FFXIII to me is a stinker. I could not get into it. One of the main characters met a woman that he acts like he knows then he drops her ass. I didn’t really care. The main characters didn’t seem to care that everyone that just talked into fighting died also. And who goes around punching people who have guns.

In Heavy Rain I feel concerned for the characters lives. In the initial mall scene I felt panic also being able to barely see a red balloon pop up in the crowd but unable to reach it. Then during the fight scenes my heart is racing and it frantic because it seems very real and plausible. The pace in between can be a bit slow, which is why I am not far into it but as of yet I like it.

It took me forever to figure out in FFXII that Lightening was someone’s name.

  5. I find that the whole FF series is a more polarizing one. Never have I seen hardcore gamers so split as they are on FF. Even one of the best like FF7 is polarizing if you ask me.
