Did You Play the Heavy Rain Demo? What Did You Think?!?

Sony dropped a short Heavy Rain demo on PlayStation Network yesterday. You’ve had sufficient time to download it and play it. Now I want to know what you think! This is one of the most divisive games I’ve come across in a while. Some people are totally into Quantic Dream’s style of storytelling. Some are dismissing it as a non-game or barely a game. Now that you’ve had a taste of it, kindly share your thoughts.

On a related note, the game was listed as #1 on Amazon when I went to grab the link. That surprised me.

  1. Played it like it but I will probably wait till the summer to get it GOW3 and stories from liberty city are higher on my list of wanted games

  2. @Raymond Padilla

I would say that QTEs are a part of the game but that is not all there is to it. Most people are misinformed about this game. There is so much more to it. I would also say give the game a try. I was so sucked in that the QTEs were not a problem. I'm not sure Quantic Dream could accomplish what they were going for with traditional controls. This is story telling and emotional attachment at it's finest. Other games try to evoke the emotion of fear by outnumbering us with a seemingly insurmountable wave of bad guys but we are never fear because we reload our gun and mow them all down without any emotion.

  3. The more I hear about this game, the more it sounds like those interactive movies from years back. That didn't go so well. I'm pulling down the demo now to see what it's all about…but being that it is PSN and I am only at 50%, it will be another 2 hours before it is done.

  4. also, did anyone else think that this game looks AMAZING graphically as well?

i really dont think ive seen better graphics in a game….maybe its just the awesome sony tv i have?

  5. @Smartguy

I started the download for the Heavy Rain demo yesterday and set my PS3 to shut off when it was done while I went to the gym. The PS3 downloads do take too long.

  6. @Thunder – from what little I've read I heard there is a large disparity graphically between cut scenes and in game action. your thoughts?

  7. people with QTEs should do well to remember that in many ways this is an RPG where the choices are yours to be made. X, O, Square, are all optional choices during most of the game, it's during the action sequences that they turn in to QTEs but as Thunder said they are optional but will change the story if not done 'correctly'

  8. @Shockwave

The character and facial animations are the best in the business but the backgrounds are top notch but not as good as the character and facial animations.

  9. @RROD, got ya, thanks, Well Quantic Dream deals in MoCap technology so that doesn't surprise me, all of the videos indicate how well they worked on facial expressions. in such an emotional game I think that's one of the most important things they could have worked on

  10. I always thought Valve had a good thing going as far as facial expressions and animation are concerned.

  11. i agree completely with rrod there

i shouldnt say the game is the most realistic ive ever seen, but the people without question are..before this i would have given it to heavenly sword, but i think heavy rain tops it

  12. @RROD – agreed, cutscene QTEs I call em… haha they're always at that point where you're about to set the controller down

  13. @Smartguy

If you think Valve did a good job on facial animation before then just wait until you see Heavy Rain.

  14. @thundercracker

No way dude??? They don't have that kind of bandwidth. I have a 20meg connection and it still takes me over 2 hours.

  15. @thunder/smartguy – I guess the time of day makes a huge difference too. I've never had a PS3 demo take less than a couple of hours. but most of the ones I've downloaded were p2p

  16. @Smartguy

Whoa, 2 hours?! I'm with Thundercracker, demo downloads take me 30 minutes at the longest. Something is seriously wrong if it's taking you 2 hours.

  17. @RROD

What is wrong is the bandwidth of PSN. EVERYTHING takes that long on PSN. Everything else I do on my Mac, xbox, iphone, etc, is speedy.

  18. I've got to agree with Smartguy here – I spent more time downloading the MGS4 beta than I did playing it.. by a long shot.

I still haven't figured out why game or system updates can take 30 minutes on PSN when they are 30 second on XBL.

Not hating on Sony it just bugs me

  19. @Smartguy

I'm not blaming anything in particular but if everything else downloads in a reasonable amount of time then PSN is your problem. The PS3 is my only console and I download a lot off of PSN and it never took me 2 hours to download anything, honestly.

  20. @Shockwave

The download times is definitely something that the Xbox has over the PS3, but we are talking about a paid service.

  21. @RROD

Even if you are a silver member of Live the updates and all other downloads are quite speedy.

    @shockwave

Yeah, I hate when I have to download an update for a game before I play it on my PS3. It really turns me off of buying titles for it. It takes about a half hour at the minimum to get the update and another 15 minutes for it to install it seems. Very frustrating.

  22. #nightshade – funny I was just thinking I'll play Bioshock 2 on 360 while Heavy Rain downloads

  23. @RROD

It's 50/50 on doing that. Some games don't cache data correctly when you install it. Orange Box comes to mind..as do the Halo titles.

I found that MW2 def played better installed.

FYI, I have no problem with HDD installs necessarily, but I do not like it to be mandatory. That gets annoying if you have to remove the install to make space or whatever. (strictly speaking of what comes stock as far as space is concerned)

  24. I will have to let you guys know how long mine takes.

@RROD – I don't usualy bother with HDD installs for my 360. Load times never really bothered me, not even on a game like Mass Effect. The last time load screens were an issue was after one of the updates on Oblivion. the loads felt forever every time I touched a door. I installed one game and barely noticed a difference. meh

  25. But doesn't the Xbox install cut down on that jet engine noise. If you're audio is coming from just the tv then that's a problem in my opinion. A home theater system can drown it out though.

  26. @RROD

That is why I don't use my PS3 that much. Like the machine, but hate the crap speeds on DL.

it's not being bottlenecked by a closed port either. No clue what the deal is. It has always been like that, on multiple ISPs.

  27. @Smartguy

I don't know what your problem is but that's not typical. As Thundercracker, Raymond, and myself have stated, it don't take us over 30 minutes. If yours is taking 3 hours for whatever reason then I understand your frustration.

  28. Got the demo. First off the visuals are nice. I dislike the amount of button presses it took to sidle between a dumpster. Hold down square, x and L1?? Really? Weird. Can overlook it, but it seemed not necessary. I also don't like having to hold down R2 just to walk and the lack of being able to move the camera is frustrating at times. I understand they do that to preserve the scene though.

Verdict: It's not for me. The story might be good, but I'll read it or maybe get this game gifted to me.

  29. Between the HD install and title updates it took me almost a hour before I could actually play Uncharted 2.

I also had to delete stuff off of my mostly empty HD in order to install Ratchet & Clank:ToD because it thought my mostly empty HD was full. That one really irritated me.

  30. Honestly, the 360 is not that loud. I have a harder time hearing the game over the dishwasher, my wife and my child than I do over my gaming console. And if I've gotta choose between turning the volume up a little or waiting an hour to play a game, I'll just tick the volume up.

  31. @RROD: Don't call me a liar, I really don't appreciate it. I sat there for damn near an hour waiting for it to do some damn thing. And that's really absurd.

  32. @Nightshade

Sorry dude, didn't mean to offend but Uncharted 2 has no install so what do you call someone who says it does?

  33. I sat there for an hour waiting for it to do something. If that was all title updates and no install then that's even more absurd because title updates on my 360 would have taken 5 minutes tops.

  34. Hey, forgive me if I forget all the details of my boredom from almot 2 months ago. I assumed with a wait that long there must have been an install as well. But my point was irrelevant of whether it was an install or a title update, I still sat there for an hour waiting to play something. All that does is encourage me to turn on my other system. And once I'm engrossed in something else, good luck getting my attention back.

  35. @Nightshade

Like I said to Smartguy, something is wrong. I don't know what but something is not right if a demo takes 3 hours and title updates take an hour. Demos take me no more than 30 minutes and updates no more than 10 minutes. I know that still longer than the Xbox but much better than your experience.

  36. @Nightshade

Sorry again for calling you a liar but Uncharted 2 is my baby like Mass Effect 2 is yours. I'm sure if I said something false about ME2 you would jump in and challenge me on it.

  37. @RROD: I would correct you on it, but I wouldn't call you a liar. It's generally better form to assume someone is making a mistake that assume they're spreading a falsehood.

Title updates on the 360 take 30 seconds to a minute. 2 minutes if my internet is acting slow. So than either there's something interfering with my connection to my PS3, or PSN just takes too damn long.

  38. The demo sucked me in more than most full games. A great experience. I wanted more and I wanted to find the origami killer. I so can’t wait to play the full game. I was extremely impressed.

  39. i loved the first chapter, the second chapter wasnt quite as good, but i highly enjoyed it

  40. i liked that during the fight, in chapter one…your injuries reflected where you got hit..if you were punched in the face, your nose was messed up, if you got cracked in the head, your head would bleed, if you took no damage, youd look fine…little things like that make all the difference to me

    @qtes

these arent traditional qtes, if you miss one, you dont die, you can choose whether or not to hit them or not….its not sega cd people…lol@sewersharks….night trap

  41. @Shockwave

That’s the best description I’ve heard about the QTEs. The only QTEs I hate are the ones that catch you off guard and you die a cheap death the first time, like in Bayonetta.

  42. for sure RROD. I guess I don’t know how the PSN or XBL infrastructures work but the difference is striking.

  43. I didn’t get a chance to try out the demo, but I ant to do so tonight.

As for the updates and HD installs, I hate how long it takes. It makes me want to do something else while I’m waiting…..like turn on my 360.

  44. Don’t you guys install games on your Xbox IF you have a HDD with enough space? There are benefits. The games run better and have less load times and you’ll be able to hear the game your playing through the tv if the Xbox isn’t spinning.

  45. Had to download it twice because apparently the 1st 150 minute download was corrupted. So all told it was a 5 hour download in order to get a playable demo. Something's clearly not right.
