Okay, you’ve read the information from Apple’s iPad press conference. The question is, “Do you feel lucky?” Oh wait, wrong question. What I meant was:

  1. Don't really care for it. I just recently got a MotionComputing tablet and at first I wanted it to be all touch screen but then I realized my hands were all over it and i'd be mashing everything.

  2. I think I might want one… I think it would be great to have around the house. it could replace my laptop for most internet surfing at the house.

I don't think I'd need an iPhone anymore

  3. I need to go see it in action myself. I wonder when they will have it at apple stores for demo purposes

  4. @Tokz_21Demo units are at the event now. I imagine the SF Apple Store will have them shortly, it they're not there already. I'd be shocked if they weren't in all stores within a month.

  5. @rpad

thanks I'll check the one at Michigan avenue maybe this weekend and hopefully have an ipad sighting. You know it just hit me that maybe sometime next year or whenever apple gets around to it. If they add a camera and let you make phone calls, you'll have one handy dandy video phone like verizon has shown in those commercials. Where you can talk, see the person and surf the web.

Patent pending apple! Don't steal my idea!

  6. @sandrock – ya, not sure why flash was missing. I bet we'll see flash for ipad, iphone, and itouch this summer with 4.0

  7. I can't explain why, but I want it. I've got my iPhone and my MacBook Pro, and there is absolutely zero reason for me to need one (most of what I do professionally is advanced enough that I need a true computer). Also, like I said before, I'm not that cultist Apple fanboy, but it just looks cool enough that I want one, just for kicks.

I can make entries in my Captain's Log as I sit in my ready room and adjust a fitted uniform top. haha

  8. @Shockwave562 As Smartguy mentioned yesterday, allowing Flash would kill a lot of iPhone apps. It sucks, but I understand why it's blocked.

@lookatthisguy It's interesting for sure. I have a sim-less iPhone 3GS and a free Kindle coming this week, but I'm still interested in the iPad. I probably won't end up getting one if I'm being smart with my money.

  9. @Shockwave562

Last I checked it was a hardware limitation that was preventing them from adding flash support. (back before the 3GS was even announced) they may hold out until less people have older models before adding support to the models that can handle it. Or they can just release a new product and never add support to older models thus forcing you to upgrade.

  10. @ Shockwave562 I also seem to remember that Apple was a big supporter of HTML5, and that they have been working on it with other companies, hoping it will revolutionize the net, and would be able to render Flash unnecessary. It's also possible they're hoping it'll take shape so that they're ready to go for it.

@ rpad Incidentally, Brent Spiner made a quip on Twitter about Captain Picard using an iPad. Then he mentioned rumors of an iTransporter? We can only hope (and only imagine the keynote for that reveal)…

  11. @Sandrock

Perhaps the first gen Iphone wasn't capable of Flash, but all subsequent entries hardware wise are. They don't use flash because the $1 games in the App store would never be bought.

    TOPIC

I'm not buying this. I don't like having something that is really a computer but can only install software from a paid app store. That really is the deal killer. Second, I'm nervous about taking that with me to do things, it really needs a lid or something for protection. The whole device is underwhelming. It has a 1GHZ chip? Ok, so does the Nexus one…so Apple has a device that is 4 times the size, but is just as fast. Gotcha.

    I have an iphone…I don't need this.

This whole device gave me an interesting idea though about the future…perhaps Apple isn't going to dump ATT. This is their way to sell the device to people without them having contracts with ATT or better yet, selling a device that appeals to the crowd who do not find the Itouch plausible. My only fear is that this device will hinder the advances in Iphone specs.

    1. @Smartguy I agree with some of what you're saying, but I can't agree the your CPU comparison. You can't compare two different chips solely based on clock speed — it doesn't mean anything. Pentium IV chips had higher clock speeds than Core 2 Duos.

  12. @Ray

Yeah, it is a loose comparison but I see the Ipad running a lot of web based apps, so I don't think the performance it offers will be much different than something like the Nexus one.

That said…the bezel on that machine is pretty significant…would make holding it to play games more of a challenge. Just another observation.

  13. I still just don't feel tge need for this. If I can (and even if I can't) get the iPhone on verizons network there is no reason for me to have this. I will say the only thing that caught my eye was the battery life, which i'm sure means a bigger battery life for the next gen iPhone.

  14. I feel like I've missed everythig today, but I just finished playing ultimate alliance with a couple Frieda for the past 10 hours and now it is time for some GTA4 for another few hours. Had to check on te ipad though in between.

  15. @iceman. I was thinking he should file suit or something. The constant reference to r"pad" is all over the web site, as well as the site name. He clearly had the ip publicly used first, lol. Multimillion dollar case right there! Haha

  16. Conversely it could help him get hits. Someone somewhere will name an App "rPad" and then Ray will receive the money.

  17. @smartguy – I think the Bezel is a necessity, the iPhone can be held in the palm whereas you need a thumb on the bezel to grip the pad. with multitouch that would mess everything up. I'm going to watch the keynote this morning and make my own judgements. a lot of the media said they were underwhelmed during the keynote and blown away when they got a chance to play with it.

I'm considering dropping att and getting the iPad, especially if Verizon doesn't get the iPhone this year. by the way, there is a case for it to prevent damage, I'd probably put it in with my work bag.

  18. @Shockwave

If you go to Verizon and I assume you will get a Droid (Moto) then why would you get an Ipad? You would already have a 16gig Smartphone that is opensource. The iPad at home for me is useless as well as on the go. I have a 13inch MacBook unibody that is pretty small and does what I need it to do. Not picking on you, but I had the same thoughts about the Verizon switch and etc. Why would you still want an iPad if you have another smartphone?

  19. big questions for the iPad I have are the functionality over the iPhone. If I can edit photos, music, and movies I'll be happy. I can access all of my stuff on my iPhone but I can't change the name or location of a photo. I can't change the artist name for a song or get the album art work. if iPad actually acts more like a computer than iPhone then I'm probably sold on it. I don't know about iWork but I guarantee MS will start working on Office for iPad

haha, is anyone else curious if the keyboard accessory works on iPhone?

  20. @Smartguy – I don't want a Droid. I have no interest in that thing. I might just get a flip phone or something. I don't need 2 PDAs and I certainly won't get another smart phone if it's not an iPhone

  21. @smartguy – I have a 13" macbook at home too but the iPad has one month of standby time. the macbook boots up fast but I think my girlfriend and I would enjoy the fact that the iPad could be sitting on the coffee table for whenever we need it. the iPhone is good but is obviously much slower and smaller than the pad, I like the iphone on the go but it doesn't make a lot of sense to browse the web at home with it

  22. @Shockwave

Either way you will be paying for data on Verizon. I think they have 2 devices that don't require a data plan. In my mind, I'll pay the $30 for unlimited instead of $20 for not as advanced devices or however that is specifically worded. I don't know if the $20 is unlimited either. Verizon might have the most reliable network, but they charge a premium for voice ( i hardly use voice) and then tack on mandatory data, and expensive text plans. Too much for me. I was just curious though.

As far as the iPad having the functionality you spoke of, I'd think it won't. Not initially anyway. Either Apple will sell you the apps or they will rely on developers putting those apps in the store.

iWork is fine for office use. I bought it a year ago. I now use MS Office for Mac simply because Excel 2007 is the best spreadsheet on the market. The words, and presentation apps in iWork are fine though. It can open files from any office app.

  23. @Shockwave

When I'm at home, I use my MacBook. We also have 2 other laptops in the house, a desktop and a PS3 if need be lol. I don't use my iPhone at home for net browsing either, but using a iPad at home for convenience without Flash capability to surf the real internet is just not jiving with me.

  24. @smartguy – good things to think about. I mean, I do own the iPhone so I could still take it anywhere if I need something more portable than the iPad. Again, I hope the software is a lot more open than the iPhone software. I want it to be more like a notebook. I think developers have a lot more room to work with when it comes to iPad software which is nice

  25. @shockwave

Therein lies my biggest dilemma with it…you can only get executable software from the App store on it. If it is more akin to a notebook, then I want to be able to pull down stuff off of the internet that I choose to run, not what Apple has deemed worth some effort in an App store.

  26. @smartguy – I definitely agree with you on that, a lot of that depends on how well iPad is received from developers. for instance, why shouldn't uTorrent create an app for it? I hope they do, but it's up to them

  27. @Shockwave

I really don't think they would approve a Utorrent app for the app store. It would take sales away from Itunes.

  28. @smartguy – true, a lot of it is speculation at this point so like I said I do want to get my hands on it, I can see how it would be better than the phone, and i see how it can be better than my laptop for reading ebooks, browsing the web, and things like that. unfortunately my laptop has my emulators on it so I know iPad couldn't completely replace my laptop. I don't think Apple intends that I replace either my laptop or iPhone with it.
