Although Nintendo is in no rush to release a true successor to the Nintendo DS, CEO Satoru Iwata hinted at what the future handheld gaming system will be like. Andrisang translated a recent article from the Asahi Shibun and reported:
Iwata told the paper that high resolution image output and a sensor that can capture player’s movements would be requirements for the followup system. However, he refused to comment on a release time frame, noting only, “DS saw its highest sales in North America in 2009.”
The unnamed portable is rumored to be packing an Nvidia Tegra processor, so a significant bump in graphics is expected. Going with motion controls for a handheld seems curious though. Nintendo is already experimenting with these kinds of features on the DSi, but it would seem silly to try to make what is essentially the Wii of handheld gaming. Then again, doubting Nintendo has been unwise for the last several years.
What do you think? Are motion controls on a portable gaming system silly? Or will people go nuts for it, similar to the Wii?

Bricks will be shat once they hear about motion control on a DS. I just look forward to improved graphics. But I still will always love my Lite.
"high resolution image output"
Tegra is supposed to be able to display images at 1080p, but what would be the point on a handheld? Makes me wonder about what features they aren't talking about.
I foresee a lot of broken handhelds.
Nintendo just lost a sale from me regardless. I'm nit buying a handheld that relies on motion control. My iPhone is pitiful enough. I can't stand rotating or moving my screen while I'm playing.
I think six-axis and accelerometer support (iphone) are 2 of the worst things we've seen in gaming thus far. I hope he's talking about something a little better than that.

yeah seriously. Have you played Katamari on iPhone? You can't even see the screen if you want to go forward or backwards.
@smartguy – to be quite honest I tend to avoid most iphone games. the few I have are fortress defense and games with virtual buttons, truth be told I prefer the virtual buttons to anything
@shockwave
Yeah…i prefer puzzle games. The Phoenix Wright series would be right up my alley if I hadn't already bought and beat every entry for the DS.
