Tnkgrl Mobile’s Exclusive Hands-On of the Google Nexus One

Google Nexus One 2

New details on the Google Nexus One have been revealed by tnkgrl Mobile in an exclusive hands-on preview. Here are some of the site’s observations on this potentially market-changing phone:

  • It’s extremely thin
  • It’s much nicer looking in person than in pictures
  • The screen appears to be OLED (same size/resolution as the Motorola Droid)
  • 3G works on T-Mobile USA :)
  • I can confirm that there’s no 3G on AT&T (EGDE only)
  • It’s definitely unlocked
  • It’s super snappy! Faster than the Droid…
  • There’s no multitouch support in the browser or in Google Maps
  • Low-light performance is decent, but the flash is weak
  • Calls are routed the normal way, not using data (VoIP), and sound fine

Head on over to the exclusive hands-on preview for more opinions and observations on the Google Nexus One. Right now I don’t know what I want more — the Nexus One of the limited edition FFXIII Lightning PS3. Ha!

  1. This phone will fail now. If it only works on 1 carrier's 3G then it might as well be an exclusive. Data drives the market for these devices that are used for more than making phone calls.

What's the point of it being unlocked?? Fail.

  2. Wow I am thoroughly disappointed now. I was looking forward to this phone. I hope AT&T gets and android phone soon.

Okay why would the phone only support the EDGE network? If it had come out 3 years ago that would have been fine but it will be 2010. (BTW do we say Twenty-10, or just Ten or like I have been messing up and saying 0Ten?)

But the new LG eXpo has the Snapdragon processor also. Only drawback is its Windows 6.5.

  3. Exactly Slicky. Why market an unlocked device if it can only utilize one data service? I don't consider EDGE a viable option in this day and age. Ridiculous.

  4. @Smartguy

Yeah the differences in EDGE and 3G are astounding. When I am using my phone to download from something like Bittorrent I can get and average download of speed of 85 but if 3G drops out and pops over to EDGE my download goes to something like 1.5 – 5 kb/s

  5. @slicky

also, att doesn't have an edge access plan. so you'd have to pay $30 for non 3G data. Horrible.

  6. @shockwave

that was then, this is now. I can't find an edge only option on their site.

If I had to guess…the Iphone 3G eliminated the edge only plan.

  7. I don't understand why the ATT version isn't 3G capable. not that there's any reason to buy this on AT&T with the iPhone on that network. no multitouch? yikes

  8. @Shockwave

I refuse to buy another iPhone. I wanted this so I could have android on AT&T. If windows mobile 6.5 was batter I'd settle for the LG eXpo (may anyways just for the pico projector)

  9. @shockwave and sandrock

No 3G because the radio frequencies for the 3G are different for both carriers. It would make the handset more expensive to include receivers/decoders for both.

Also you can download the dolphin browser for android which gives you multi-touch functionality on Android.

As far as ATT not allowing Google, I'm sure that will change once Iphone exclusivity ceases.

  10. @Slicky – I understand, it would be nice to have another legitimate choice on AT&T but unless you're a blackberry guy I don't think there's a better option on ATT.

I'm on my 5th iPhone in the 3 generations and I'm starting to wonder if I'll ever own a phone that isn't made by Apple.

  11. @Smartguy

I meant that ATT might be forcing Google to sell an ATT 3G enabled phone through ATT. Or it could simply be that Google has more than one version of the phone and the T-Mobile version just happened to be the one he previewed. All that is speculation of course since Google hasn't actually announced the phone yet.

I currently own a Blackberry. I just never found the iPhone to be a good PHONE. It did everything else okay, buy as an actual phone it was horrible. I had the iPhone 3G and the battery was horrid. The fact that I couldn't get MMS was crap also. My phone wouldn't even send me a notification that I had a picture and after several hours on the phone with AT&T and then being transferred to Apple tech support they told me not all of the iPhone can even get the message that you got a picture.

So the I cracked my iPhone and didn't really care for any of the application it had, sure it was fun but never was it very functional.

Windows Mobile has better functionality even though Apple's UI is better.

My iPhone has been the only phone that was unable to keep up with my texting also. The delay it had just made typing a bear. Back when I had mine portrait mode was the only keyboard available too.

I returned my iPhone after 20 days with it. I have considered getting another but then I realize I only like them for a second. I feel the same way about the Wii as I do the iPhone its fun as long as its someone else's.

  13. Oh wait I also loathe iTunes.

Why should I have to plop down my credit card just to sign up for an account. I just want to download free stuff but still need my credit card info???

  14. @Slicky – I have heard that credit card argument alot. Is it just a security thing that bothers you, or the inconvienence of having to enter it?

  15. @iPhone – I love my iPhone. Before I bought it, I had never owned a phone that was current with the times and did absolutely zero with it unless it was making calls. Now I text more then call, which is excellent since I don't really call anyone anyway, and I get to download cool stuff for it, most of which is free. It also functions as my music player, which is also great cause that's one less thing to carry around. My area is not an "AT&T loser" zone, so that works too. All in all, very happy.

  16. @ R Pad

Yeah, I know. I've just never really had as much trouble with the network as you and others apparently have. Everywhere I've gone… I get awesome signal. I used to have trouble inside my old office, but that was because it was non-receptive structure literally in the middle of the desert.

I had WAY more trouble with T-Mobile than I ever did AT&T. My in-laws have Verizon, and they always have trouble. Granted, this is just my experience.

I had no troubles when I went to Pittsburgh either. Layovers in Phoenix… no loss of signal at all.

The thing that other networks/phones will really have to compete with is the App Store. The App Store is totally awesome. I don't see anyone coming close to it anytime soon. iTunes is also the #1 retailer for music so… that's gonna be hard to trump as well.

Not to mention, we all know Apple is considering moving carriers. All it would take is a firmware update and you could move your phone to whatever carrier they end up going to… right?

  17. @N8R Incorrect on the firmware update. Although AT&T and T-Mobile are both GSM carriers, they use different 3G frequencies that require different radios. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA, which is totally incompatible with current iPhones.

  18. @Larcenous

The credit card thing bothers me because I paid off all of my credit cards before I looked into buying a house then I just never bothered to get another one. I also had the bank remove my debit card. Its far too easy to spend money that is made of plastic. So I can't use the iPhone because I refuse to use credit cards. (this has been a problem while renting a car also though)

  19. @N8R

No, a firmware update will not solve issues related to porting the device over to another carrier. Tmobile and ATT use different radio frequencies for 3G, a firmware update can’t resolve that. Verizon is CDMA as is Sprint.

I do agree that the App Store in conjunction with ITunes content that has been purchased hooks and keeps people on Apple’s device.
