Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the effects of tryptophan, the awesome repackaged WWE Festus’ debut tonight on Smackdown, or your latest comic books, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.
First off, I actually just brewed a fresh pot of coffee, so I think the Coffee Talk name still applies. Ha! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday yesterday. Now it’s time for the down and dirty part — Black Friday.
Some of you are out shopping today. If that’s the case, I think you’re pretty nuts. I absolutely can’t stand Black Friday — too many people, too many inexperienced sales reps, too few parking spots, ridiculously long lines, etc. The only time I enjoyed it was when I was a poor college kid; I’d just go to the mall, grab an Icee, and watch all the miserable shoppers.
Having said that, there are a ton of great deals to be had, whether you’re at stores or wisely shopping online. Today I want to hear about your Black Friday success stories. What did you pick up? Anything surprise you? If you found any great online deals, please share them with your fellow RPadholics.
I bought a Cooler Master HAF 932 off of newegg earlier. $125 with a $35 rebate, good for only today, and free shiping.
Anyone seen a good deal on The World Ends With You? (new)
my worst black friday ever was my first one. back in 08, target was selling dead space for 30 bux, so i had to get it. when i got inside the store at 5 am, the ps3 section in the electronics department was empty, so i rushed myself there, but the glass slide door was closed. so i was just standing there. then a few seconds, this whole mob of people rushed in on where i was standing and i almost couldnt breathe. people were pushing me on the glass sliding door, i was like one of the front row people in a NOFX concert.(im 6'1 and i weigh 215 pounds, and i was still struggling to find some loose space) then i noticed that damn sliding door was unlocked! so i slid it open got my copy of dead space, and people were telling "give me that same game you have!" or "can you get me that $20 game?!?!?!" but i found an escape hole in the crowd and got out of there just like that. I went straight to the register, went home, and enjoyed the rest of my friday by dismembering necromorphs.
oh, my best black friday was today, lol. the crowd control at my wal mart and best buy were great! i got borderlands from gamestop. and some blu rays from both best buy and wal mart.
Meh. I just picked up Scribblenauts for $16.99 on Amazon's Lightning Deals. I shouldn't be spending money…but I need to see how this game panned out…so I can write about it…yeah, that's it!
@sandrock323 They have it up on Amazon right now for 15.82 not sure if it's a BF deal though.
LOL R-Pad
TWEWY = Bought
@R-Pad
If I buy something through your Amazon ads, do they have to be the thing shown in the ad or is it anything as long as I used the ad to get to the site?
I drank a bottle of wine…took a nap….played some MW2. Put up the christmas tree, and hung some lights. I didn't get to go out and shop a bit as planned.
I'm also pretty pissed that Apple doesn't do more for black friday.
@Sandrock323 It can be anything as long as it's in the same browsing session.
@Smartguy What kind of wine?
@Ray
Triana. A lucky find, else it was going to be Rabbit Ridge Merlot.
@Smartguy I actually order a fair bit of wine from http://wine.woot.com
Lots of great deals from small vineyards.
@rbee;
If you ever plan on doing that again, may I suggest dressing up as a hard-core member from (Oakland) Raider Nation? Complete with spiky shoulder pads and a Mohawk helmet.
@Mr. Padilla;
I don't know where you found that picture, but it is truly epic in so many ways. My first reaction was one of dismay at the poor employee behind that counter. There is absolutely NO amount of money you could pay me to ever be in that situation. My pity soon turned into worry as the only thing keeping him from being mobbed to death is a few pieces of wood, glass, and shoddy Formica. What if all that leaning against the counter by the mobsters (the people that form the mob) causes the counter to buckle under the weight and collapse? Those poor men behind the counter wouldn't have a chance. It's like a really bad level from L4D. Lastly, I find it strangely amusing that the focus of the picture is a black guy who seems defiantly calm in the face of a horde of white people reaching out to him… it's almost like a modern version of a working slave. All you need to do is put some white sheets and hoods on the people around the counter and the allegory would be complete. Brilliant photography.

@Iceman I still find it alarming that people get injured or killed during Black Friday openings. I haven't read anything about this year, but I remember there people being trampled at a store opening in New York last year. I wrote about it for TheFeed, but don't want to find the link. Ha!
@iceman
i live in LA county, but i hate the raiders. they belong in my black and merciless heart. i would wear that kind of costume. but with no raider insignia imprinted whatsoever. besides im not much of a football guy. altho i watch some certain games if im bored. im more of a basketball guy.
@Ray
Cool site. I tend to make it myself. I was a brewer at the Abita Brewing Company for many years before I went back to college to become an accountant. I am always on the lookout for something new and good.
I don't know if you are a beer fan at all…but one of my favorite breweries is in California..Anchor Brewing Company. Such good stuff.
I've worked waaaaaay too much retail in my life to EVER go out on Black Friday. I spent the day playing with my son instead. Play Park FTW!!!
@Smartguy I used to live near Anchor when I was in San Francisco — like blocks away. It's great stuff, but I can't drink too much beer these days.
I tried not to go out… BUT… my wife had decided too hit up Walmart at 3:00am with her mom. Around 7:30/8:00, I get a phone call from her saying "You're gonna have to pick me up, mom has to go to work and we've been in line for 2 hours already and it's looking like another one still. I also need you to bring me more money."
:(
So, I got my sister-in-law to watch my kids as I headed to Walmart. To my surprise, it was as if the Red Sea of shoppers opened and just let me ease on over there. All the lights were green on the way, very few cars were out, and a parking space opened up for me as soon as I entered the parking lot. I got lucky.
i went to gamestop, got ac2 and 2 games that i really didnt want
dragon age and demons souls
but i gotta tell you, i played dragon age all night last night, and it was geninuely fun as hell, i liked the story, and it seemed to have so many different ways to play it.
im at the part where morrigan joins my party, i wonder how far i am into the game?
also went to toys r us so i could buy my daughter "swim to me puppy"
but they were out…but so were the milfs!!
seriously, my girlfriend went out when she got up, went to wal mart and came home saying she almost bought a zsu zsu pet, cause she found a bunch hidden away.
those things are selling for 50 bucks on ebay, and she could have bought a bunch for 8 bucks or so…she needs to take an economics class
haha.
wow, everyone is raving about Dragon Age. I might have to consider it one day. I just don't want to play another bioware RPG for some time. Choosing my dialogue bores me.
@ Smartguy
It's cool dude, I got your back. I'll choose your dialogue for you.
Your next comment is:
"It doesn't matter what the record is, the Steelers are still the best team in the league and forever will be for the rest of time."
@Thundercracker: If that's where you're at, you're not very far at all. You'll get 60hrs out of each playthrough easily.
@N8R
nice one. well allow me to retort; except for this season, the Saints are clearly better than us on our best day.
@ Smartguy
We're starting Dixon this week against the Ratbirds.
:cry:
I really hope he surprises me.
i need help from one of you computer nerds
this is how obsessive i am, i have a 500 gb hard drive, but now theres a 640 gb 2.5 hard drive that will fit in a ps3, im thinking of upgrading again….
http://cgi.ebay.com/Seagate-2-5-640GB-500GB-320GB…
will one of you smart people tell me if that hard drive IS definitely compatible with the ps3?
PS3 uses FAT32 formatting, so you could theoretically fit up to 2TB on the machine. That said, the thickness of the drive is what is important. 9.5mm will be the number you are looking for. Anything more and it won't fit.
yep, that drive is 9.5, just checking
thanks smartguy
no problem. remember, an external is always an option if you need that much more space.
You want to hear crazy stories from my Black Friday?
I worked at 4am at Best Buy. in the NYC area. We had people take Wii's, run into our warehouse and try to get out an escape door to getaway cars. No one was trampled like out in Long Island last year. Basically it was mass chaos with people trying to steal or wait online for 30 minutes for a cd that was not on sale or new becuase they just really wanted the cd……
