Microsoft claims that its new Xbox Live features of Facebook, Twitter, and Last.fm integration have been immensely successful. Facebook is leading the way with more than two-million log-ins. CNet has reported:
According to Microsoft spokesman David Dennis, the first-week figures show that at least 2 million Xbox Live users have logged into Facebook, and that half a million Last.fm accounts were created in the first 24 hours of availability. Dennis didn’t address how many Xbox Live users have used the service’s Twitter feature, except to say that there have been “tweets from nearly every market where we have Xbox Live.”
I know that most of you aren’t high on these features, but it’s clear that they’re popular and an important value-add for the Xbox 360. While many enthusiast gamers might scoff at their consoles being used for anything that doesn’t involve a game, millions of general consumers are happy that their gaming systems have broad capabilities. This generation has really changed the idea of what a console is and I can’t wait to see how they’ll continue to evolve.
Do you think social networking on consoles is a fad? Or is part of an evolution (not the one with Ric Flair and Triple H)?
You know, I checked out the Twitter and Facebook blades once, and I haven't used them since. Last.fm on the other hand is on quite a bit in my house. I love that even the obscure bands that I listen to that no one's heard of are on there.
I'd prefer the fad of Degeneration X, kthxbai.
Even tho I still don't on a 360, I wouldn't wanna tweet or facebook on my console. I just can't roll that way.
@CamiKitten You catch the Survivor Series triple threat? I heard it was pretty awesome.
Gah to my disappointment, I didn't get to watch the ppv this time around. :(
My kids were super excited to see my brother (their uncle) on Last.fm. They were like "It's Uncle Damon… on Xbox Live!!!"
@CamiKitten It's worth downloading if you do that sorta thing.
I think the last.fm will be more widely used, and plenty of people might like having facebook and Twitter on XBL. But it is about integration of everything and having whatever you want available when you want it. It is important that the integration is there because there will overall be enough people to warrant this type of breathrough. After this, who knows what will be next, but this dimly opens doors. The one way that I think this is different than the browser on ps3 is that this is integration (which I think is better than just having abilty), and it's good that some companies are realizing the value of integration versus just having an ability.
I’m with nightshade – it’s like the browser on the PS3. it’s really cool when you first check it out but most people will only use it a couple of times I think.
My brother and his girlfriend are visiting from Hawaii. We spent about an hour looking at photos on Facebook for Xbox 360.
I love Last FM and have been using it since it launched, the kids LOVE my Yo Gabba Gabba channel.
I actually broke down and tried facebook on my 360 and while I like how quickly photos come up and its ease of use, I am still not impressed enough to use it beyond the 2 times. and twitter…no, wont use it. not ever.
@Hrolf: Is not Yo Gabba Gabba the creepiest thing on TV? My son used to like it, but ever since he saw the episode with Jack Black he doesn't want to watch it anymore. Everytime it comes on he says, "Dada, I don't like new friend" and backs away from the TV with this face that says, "don't make me do it."
For anyone who doesn't know what this show is like, here's a youtube link:
actually I love the show. reminds me of a newer version of the sid and marty krofft show from way back.
