If you’re not looking forward to Heavy Rain for PlayStation 3 then I probably won’t like you. Okay, I’m half-kidding about that, but it is the game I’m looking forward to the most in 2010. A lot of gamers are wondering why Quantic Dream chose to make this a PlayStation 3 exclusive. Company founder and co-CEO David Cage explained it all to Push Square
Whatever I answer, my answer will be suspicious… I think it had to be on PlayStation 3 for two main reasons: the hardware, the architecture of the PS3 is extremely powerful in the way it is structured. If you make a real PS3 engine, then you can have really fantastic performances. If you try to port from another platform, then it becomes difficult.
That’s a pretty reasonable answer. I’m also happy Cage pointed out the issue of getting better results when using “a real PS3 engine”. Too many developers get middling resorts because they have to go multiplatform, which causes some gamers to write off the PS3. But wait! There’s more!
This is a console we all love at the studio. I play PSOne, PS2, it’s really a part of my culture. The controller is part of my home… and it’s a really, really powerful console.
Okay, this part is totally fluffy. Thankfully the next part isn’t.
I’m not so much into graphics, to be honest with you, I don’t believe you need ultra realistic graphics to get emotion, you can get that with very low graphics. But we wanted to create emotion from believable characters, that was the idea. With this approach PS3 was by far the best platform.
He’s right. Indigo Prophecy was a highly emotional game with ass graphics. I’m thrilled Cage got over his not-so-much-into-graphics thing because I’ve been dreaming about a Quantic Dream game with the company’s excellent storytelling and sharp graphics.
Okay, I’m getting too excited about Heavy Rain. I better calm down. It’s still 2009.
I loved Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain is the reason I got a PS3. I am soooooo anticipating this game. I love to be driven by an amazing story. It's why I love BioWare so much. I hope you don't hate me for not posting comments when this comes out cause I will be pretty busy playing this seemingly amazing game.
Makes sense. Unreal engine doesn't run very well on PS3.
I have to disagree with him about the controller though. Since the xbox type S controller came out, I prefer more space between the sticks and for them to be staggered. Maybe I'm just wired wrong, but there is no scenario where the PS controller has an advantage where the analog stick placement is concerned.
This game will be amazing and I can't wait to play it. I hope Heavy Rain makes more devs step outside of the shooter box.
I know a lot of people are dying to play this game, but I need to see more gameplay. So far it looks like a quick time button pressing fest. And if that's the extent of the gameplay, I'm not interested. I mean, I'm a sucker for a good story. But the gameplay's gotta be entertaining too or else you might as well just make a movie.
I'm all about the demo for this game when it is released. I've never played a Quantic Dream game though I've heard generally positive things. My only concern is I want to play this game not watch it.
I love a cinematic game as much as the next guy but If they don't pull off what they're trying in this game I may feel detached from it like a movie. I think Uncharted 2 had a wonderful mix of cinematics and gameplay.
I guess what I'm getting down to is that I don't want to press buttons while watching a movie. I know that's not what they are going for so I don't expect that I'm just saying I won't like the game if that's what we get
@nightshade – I think quick time is the worst thing that ever happened to games. at any rate I also think this is deeper than that. however I have no proof to go on so I too would like to see some more gameplay
@Shockwave: the overall game concept sounds interesting to me. But what I've seen of the gameplay so far has left me wondering what the point of it all was.
QTB's are ok in short bursts for a quick cinematic scene here or there. The new WWE SDvsR uses them very well in the new Royal Rumble mode as opposed to just mashing buttons to eliminate guys and stave off elimination. So there's a place for them in games. But you can't base an entire game around them and expect to grab most people.
@Nightshade & Shockwave
You two are the reason why devs can only make shooters.
@RROD, I think I have a right to be skeptical of a genre that doesn't exist yet and a developer who I've never seen in action.
would you agree that if you were just doing quick time events and watching a movie you wouldn't like the game either?
@RRoD: I like plenty of different game genres. But show me more gameplay than this.
I've gotta say, I'd feel the same way about it no matter which console this game came out for. This undying love a lot of people have for games that haven't even come out yet just because of the system it's on is totally stupid. I'm guessing roughly half the people who are actually excited about this game are just PS3 fanboys who wouldn't give a rat's ass if it were either a 360 game or multiplatform.
@Shockwave
I've played Quantic Dream's last game called Indigo Prophecy and loved it. I know what to expect. It's not all QTEs. If people have a problem with that then how do you like Brutal Legend with all of the RTS moments? I'm just tired of people being critical of a dev for delivering something new but when another shooter is announced everybody goes crazy with excitement for the yearly COD update.
@Nightshade
Wrong. My undying love for this unreleased game has nothing to do with it being a PS3 exclusive. It has everything to do with it being the successor to Indigo Prophecy which was on the PS2 AND Xbox 1. If you had played Indigo Prophecy then you would know where the excitement comes from. You are excited about MW2 even though it's not released, right? Why, because you played the last COD. I'm also heavily looking forward to Bioshock 2 which is also on Xbox 360.
To my understanding Indigo prophecy was a very different game than this. Also, according to what I've read Indigo Prophecy was a very ambitious game that missed the mark.
PS3 exclusive/Xbox exclusive, they mean nothing to me. Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite games in the last couple years. Like I said I'm excited about this game I'm just skeptical until I see more. I'll be the first to praise it if the game is successful
The emotional depth they have shown so far in the released media have been pretty neat, but there were a lot of things there that I am not sure about. Take the recently shown scene in the nightclub. I like the participation with the dancing, and the system of thoughts while she is walking up the stairs looked very neat. I was not excited about her dressup scene in the bathroom, applying mascara is an odd gameplay mechanic that really didnt need to be there. I don't mind being present for things like this, it helps to build tension and lets you into the characters mind, but there was no reason for that scene to contain gamplay tacked on to what amounted to a cut scene, especially when it looked like there was no option to not do certain things. Let me decide how short to tear the skirt, or how far to unbutton the shirt if you are going to give me the option for gameplay.
The game looks like it could be great… and it also looks like it could be a train wreck of incredible proportions. I'll be skeptical till I get my hands on it. Certainly looks innovative though, and as long as the demo is engaging, innvoation will be rewarded with a purchase.
@RROD, I don't know about the RTS in brutal Legend, I haven't played it. nor do I want CODMW2
@Larcenous – well said
Actually, I'm not a big CoD guy. I like them, but I much more interested in a lot of other games. And the leaked footage really has me kinda turned off honestly….. :-/
And honestly, I feel like Bioshock 2 could be THE BIG letdown of this console generation. There's like 4 different development studios working on it, plus delays, no Ken Levine and my biggest fear is that I'll be doing way too many escort missions as a Big Daddy. Too many signs point to disappointment on this one. I hope I'm wrong though, because I really liked the first one.
That being said, if you've played Indigo Prophecy and are excited that's different than the point I was making which you assumed was directed specifically at you. If I was accusing you of only caring because you're a PS3 fanboy, I'd have just come out and said it. Doesn't change my overall sentiments on most fanboy's excitement level on this one though. And I fear a number of them are going to get their hands on this and be sorely disappointed in the overall gameplay.
im a ps3 fanboy and im looking forward to this game because i see incredible potential here…
will it disappoint, probably…it most likely wont live up to my expectations, as they are set higher for this one than any game in my recent memory
im more excited for this one than god of war…ill replay this sonabitch like 50 times
choose your own adventure ftw
@Nightshade
You may be right about Bioshock 2. I'm not thrilled about playing as a Big Daddy but we'll see how it turns out.
@Larcenous – thanks for the info. If I wanted to do stuff like this I would buy a wii.
But it's definitely on my radar. I still haven't seen enough to think I'll really like it, and the more footage I watch the less I seem to think I will
Bioshock 2 frightens me. although some of the footage I've seen looks pretty awesome you still have to wonder. the problem is I know it's going to get good reviews I'm just wondering how much I'm going to like it
In all honesty, not all great games need a sequel in the first place. I'm thinking Bioshock is one of those games that should probably stand alone. But with as well as it did, you knew a sequel was inevitable.
@nightshade – it really can take away from the story. I mean, if it's 10 years later how is this whole place not completely flooded, I think the splicers are a little too crazy for routine maintenance
@Shockwave562 Your understanding of Indigo Prophecy is pretty far off. In terms of gameplay style, Heavy Rain is an advancement over IP, but they're certainly related. I wouldn't say IP "missed the mark" either. It was a great game with ugly graphics.
@Rpad, maybe if I had played IP I would understand better. the reviews are generally good with a lot of people who didn't care for all the quick time events. I think it's too late to get IP but pending good reviews I'll give Heavy Rain a shot. From what I've seen I just don't think it looks exciting outside of a cool story
@Shockwave562 Isn't IP available for download on Xbox Live? I recommend it. It's worth playing, just make sure your eyes are ready for some ugliness. The game looked bad back then. These days, it might be unintentionally scary.
@Rpad – for you, I'll give it a shot. maybe I'll finally get an insight as to what I can expect from Heavy Rain. I've seen some videos on youtube and it does look pretty dated but I can forgive that
@Rpad, looks like with some leftover points from Gay Tony I only had to spend $6 extra to get it. I'll give it a shot this weekend and let you know what I think.
@Shockwave562 You should do it for you. Ha! Overall, I think IP is a fantastic game. There is one mini-game that I hated, but other than that I loved the gameplay, story, and music. I cannot overstate how ugly the game is though. Thinking about it made me throw up in my mouth a little. Okay, that didn't really happen, but the game is definitely ugly — we're talkin' PSone graphics on the Xbox.
@Rpad – Well if there's any criticism about Heavy Rain it certainly won't be about the graphics
@Shockwave – true that. The game does look beautiful.
@Shockwave562 Certainly. The biggest criticism will be why they didn't license "Chocolate Rain" for the opening credits.
Classic, one of my favorite all time videos
@ Ray – God where is my roflcopter ascii… Kudos for bringing Tay Zondae into this, though Chad Vader's Vanilla Snow was fantastic as well. Pardon me while I move in to breathe.
@LarcenousLaugh It's also applicable to several videogame situations. Heavy Rain is one. Epic Games Mark Rein is another. I always sing "Chocolate Rain" and/or "Purple Rain" whenever I see Mark.
