This Week’s Videogame Releases

It looks like the only noteworthy game shipping this week is Injustice: Gods Among Us. Comic-book fanboys and fighting-game aficionados will definitely want to keep their eyes on this one. One of my videogame writer friends was raving about the game last night, saying that it’s lots of fun and comparable to the most recent Mortal Kombat game. As a mark from DC Comics (Nightwing rules!) and one of the people that actually enjoyed Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, I’m excited for this…but really, I’m excited for any game that features Nightwing. The dude rules, like Ben Affleck in Phantoms.

Any of you picking up new games this week?

  1. I just beat this game (about a 6-8 hour ordeal for someone who is bad at this style of fighting game) and enjoyed the story and the characters the most. Honestly I expected just a little more from the graphics at times.

I hate to be “that gamer” and make complaints about graphics when the story was the main thing I was concerned with, but on more than a couple occasions I found myself surprised at how bad the character’s facial expressions and designs were. The lighting and movements of all the little pieces in the settings were excellent during gameplay, but then out of nowhere during a cut-scene the graphics suddenly seemed to get worse. I suppose I expected that the cut-scenes would be better than the gameplay graphics, and was surprised when that wasn’t always the case.

The characters were fun, but some of them felt poorly done. Can we do nothing cooler to the Flash’s outfit other than add a bunch of seems to his clothing?? Can nobody other than the porn industry make a better looking Wonder Woman?? I also didn’t care for this interpretation of Shazam. On the other hand, Lex Luthor, Joker, Green Arrow, and Aquaman were probably some of my favorite characters to use in this game and they all had cool looking interpretations.

I did manage to try out the multiplayer, and boy did I get slaughtered. This just goes back to basic gameplay mechanics for this style of game though. The game can be won without completely mastering the combos, but any multiplayer matches or battle matches (I suspect) all but require the use of constant blocking, combos, and some pretty sweet supermoves. This shouldn’t be a problem for anyone else who likes Mortal Kombat game (or even those who ride trolleys instead), but it’s not my forte so I had fun just sticking with the story.

Maybe I’ll pick this game up again someday and try my hand at mastering the techniques needed to be the very best there ever was (wait, that’s the wrong game), but I think for me the story might have been enough.

      1. I’ll take this comment as +2 enough. It was a fun game though, and I think any comic book fan will enjoy this story/game.
