Coffee Talk #271: Sleeper Hits of 2010

There were so many fantastic games in 2010 that some of them were bound to get less attention than they deserved. Are there any games that you loved this year that fit that description?

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, whether you got powers from the recent lunar eclipse, why the hell Manny Pacquiao is fighting Shane Mosley, or Cafecito Organico’s Guatemala El Carmen Estate, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

There were so many fantastic games in 2010 that some of them were bound to get less attention than they deserved. Are there any games that you loved this year that fit that description? 1Up.com’s Sam Kennedy, Gamasutra’s Christian Nutt, and GameFly Media’s (Shacknews) Garnett Lee share their sleeper hits of 2010. Watch the video above to see if any of your favorites made the list.

Naturally, I want your picks for 2010’s sleeper hits. Let me know what games you think should have gotten more love.

  1. Hmmm…I'd have to go with NBA2k11 for me. DId not see that game being so awesome.

    @Manny

    Better watch out…Tyson was supposed to steamroll Douglas. Trap fight!

    i'd still put money on Manny though.

    1. Douglas was not 39 and way past his prime. Mosley is a fighter that was once great and has clearly lost speed. Douglas was an underachiever that finally put it all together on one night. The situations are completely different.

      1. Douglas beat Tyson when Tyson was seen as unbeatable. Like Manny is now. That was where my comparison lies.

        My opinion they have that in common. The rest I defer to you since I haven't followed boxing as close.

      2. Except that Pacquiao is not viewed as unbeatable. Unlike Tyson at the time, Manny has several losses and questionable decisions. A lot of people think Mayweather beats him now. I hate Floyd, but I think he clowns Manny. Other fighters can beat Manny, depending on what weight they fight at.

      3. Dang, I don't really follow boxing, but I feel like I know more about it than the average person thanks to reading everything you have said on the matter… Especially on Manny Pacquiao.

        If anybody ever starts talking to me about boxing, I'm just going to repeat everything I've heard you say about boxing and hope I don't sound like a moron.

  2. From what everyone else says, Bayonetta is a pretty good game- and I didn't really expect it to be. So despite me not playing it yet I would say that it is sleeper hit of the year. Every other game that I have played I feel was expected to do well, or be good in some way, shape, or form.

    1. I can lend you the game if you want. I'm pretty much done with it. It's very similar to the "Devil May Cry" series if you like that kind of over-the-top, beat-'em-up action. Don't even bother trying to understand the "story". It's some kind of crazy Japanese thing that we apparently weren't meant to understand.

      Anywho, e-mail me if you're interested (icemanmx@aol.com)

    1. that one was ok, but I wasn't the biggest fan of a couple parts. maybe I just wasn't good enough to play it- but I felt it was fairly easy and then all of a sudden disproportionately hard at a couple points and I didn't find that too enjoyable.
