32% of iPad Owners Haven’t Downloaded an App?!?

According to a recent study by Nielsen Wire, 32 percent of Apple iPad owners have not downloaded an app. Compare that to 63 percent having downloaded a paid app and five percent having downloaded free apps only. That deserves a Brian Fellow, “That’s crazy!!!”

There’s no doubt that the iPad is an amazing device that has legitimized the tablet computing market, but it’s also a popular choice for hipsters that want to be seen with a cool piece of consumer electronics at a trendy coffeehouse. As my friend Christian says, “The iPad is an international symbol for douchebaggery.”

Keep in mind that the survey used a sample size of 5,000 consumers. Still, the numbers are fascinating. What do you think of them? Do you agree that the iPad is one of the most coveted hipster accessories in 2010? Also, the next time I go to Intelligentsia in Silverlake and see someone with an iPad, I’m going to assume it’s some lamer that has never downloaded an app.

  1. I do completely agree that the iPad is a coveted hipster accessory (as Apple products tend to be, at least in my area).

Also, 5,000 people is plenty big for a sample size. Actually, 361 is usually regarded in research as the smallest possible sample size to accurately gauge a nationwide opinion. So technically that sample size is 4,639 people (1285%) bigger than the minimum required for a proper national opinion.

On another note, I always feel like Apple could find that statistic pretty easily by looking at the data that they already have and it would be 100% correct. But I should keep my mouth shut on that one since them not doing so is keeping a few researchers employed.

      1. haha, yeah I believe that. It's amazing how many people I know who have that technology with no real concept of how to use anything remotely technical. But I guess that just means Apple did well because I that is how they want to market their products. I've attended complete advertising classes that focused on how Apple marketed and sold the iPod to people who just want to look cool.

      2. Same thing here only people just get a ton of apps and just flip through the pages. I see it all the time on the T (our public transit system) plus I live smack in the middle of Boston College and Boston University.

  2. Maybe they just don't own a credit card and CAN'T download apps. I had to borrow a friends credit card to use the app store to "buy" free stuff. Biggest pain in the ass ever main reason I will never use an Apple product again.

  3. Hey does this count jailbroken apps. you know if people have downloaded cracked apps from a certain installer program. you know with jailbreaking the iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch isn't illegal maybe those 32% are jailbreakers and now how to use this program if it doesn't count those cracked apps.

      1. i guess but i'm thinking word of mouth spreads, especially with 4.1 not out yet for the iPad all they had to go was type the url and use the slide bar, it's not that hard for the old jb. if people find something easy and gives them access to free stuff, they'll do it.
