Coffee Talk #229: What Kind of Headphones Do You Use?

Whether it’s playing games, listening to music, or watching a movie, a good pair of headphones can drastically alter your experience. Today I’m going to talk about the headphones I use and get some recommendations from you.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, Christina Aguilera being single, your ALCS/NLCS predictions, or touchscreen phones having more bacteria than urinal handles, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

Whether it’s playing games, listening to music, or watching a movie, a good pair of headphones can drastically alter your experience. Today I’m going to talk about the headphones I use and get some recommendations from you.

I’ve been using the same headphones for the last eight years and am extremely happy with my gear. At home, I use Grado’s SR125 open-ear cans; they offer incredible sound quality at an incredible price — the SR 125s sound as good or better than cans that cost two to three times as much. On the road, I opt for in-ear headsets with foam tips. The foam tips completely rule at blocking out airplane noise. My Etymotic ER-4Ps offer a perfectly balanced sound, while my Shure E4Gs offer more bass and a sound most people prefer for pop music.

What kind of headphones do you guys and dolls use?

      1. I use the Turtlebeach Earforce X4 5.1 and the surround sound is legit for my 360. They have new ones for 7.1 surround sound but I'm fine with 5.1. For my iPod and phone I switch with the seasons. When its summer time and the weather is hot, I use Skull Candy earbuds and in the winter I use my Sony over the ear headphones with noise cancellation (they double as earmuffs).

      2. Dude, I have the X1. Not their best set, but the cheapest one. Audio is still nice and having a definite left/right sound is very useful in shooters.

  1. i use philips headphones that i bought on ebay for 8 bucks

im trying to contribute, but im not an earphone connoseur like you tech savvy people…

    @totally unrelated

buy 2 get 1 at gamestop for the next 3 days!!

    1. speaking of which

how is dead rising 2? would you guys reccomend it?

i may see if i can get the move controller for free

  2. I'm pretty basic, I just use the basic headset for playing on my 360, and I have my iPod touch earbuds with the volume control and the mic built in to them for pretty much everything else.

I've seen (heard?) some pretty nice headphones, but it's just never something that I end up spending my money on.

  3. yeah i'm with BSU i don't use anything fancy with my 360, iphone/ipod, or PS3. i should update to some bluetooth. i'm really getting annoyed with the headset plugging into the controller on the 360. i use a bluetooth with my Ps3 but it's some cheap $20 one i picked up. Any ideas for a good bluetooth for both systems?

    1. Yeah I wish they would have given the halo: reach limited edition wireless headset with the whole bundle instead of the cheap little headset they did give me.

      1. i agree bsu. it's like i'm already getting ripped of because of no HDMI cable and i have to get this cheapy headset with it. wtf!

      2. Yeah, personally since I don't have a need for HDMI cables it isn't a big concern to me, but if I did I know I wouldn't like that lack of an option. I really did expect a much better headset than the one the shipped, if my old headset didn't have messed up wiring I would still use that because I think it is better quality.

      3. you know what i find funny about the xbox bundles. they picture a wireless headset but still give you a wired one. isn't that false advertisement at its finest

      4. do they really? I have not noticed that anywhere…yeah that really is, makes me wanna call and demand a wireless headset now! lol.

      5. yeah! i know my box had a picture of them. I'm not at home or else i would send it to you. i was very disappointed when i saw those wired headsets.

  4. I use the official Sony earpiece with my PS3. It has a mute button and on screen battery display.

    1. i didn't know it did that??? interesting, i'll have to look into that one for my PS3. i'd really prefer one that works for both systems but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

      1. @tokz- It can also be used as a room microphone when it's charging. I also have one and would recommend it.

  5. I wanted that too, but I'm still not shelling out that kinda cash for it. But for the ps3 I used a LG bluetooth that works pretty well. I just can't use it right now b/c I have no idea where I put the damn charge cord -_-. And for my DS and rhapsody I just use a $20 pair of Sony over the ear headphones. I can't do ear buds, I've tried and tried and tried. Even the resizable kind. They're either way to big and hurt my ear or way too small and fall out every time I turn my head.

    1. I know what you mean Cami, earbuds don't usually work too well unless I'm sitting still. Just recently however, I found some new Sony ones that stay in my ears very well. They're called PIIQ Earbuds-

They sort of clip onto your earlobes, instead of just hanging there or clipping over the top of your ear.

  6. @Ray

I should be in Chicago tomorrow night and I'm planning on stopping by Intelligentsia per your recommendation before…anything specific you can recommend to a non coffee drinker looking to experience some premium coffee?

  7. I tend to not use haedphones most of the time. The only time I do use them is at work to listen to music via my cell phone of watch a movie at work. And then I use the supplied wired earbuds I got with the phone. But they are some of the best I have ever used, albeit I typically only buy super cheapy ones because my cats have an affinity for biting them in 2.

    1. that's true or be nice. that's how they make a living i'd let them take my picture or video. i think common sense sometimes slips athletes and movie stars minds at times.

      1. dude! you never heard of Angry Birds!!! it was the #! game for the Iphone for like 6 straight weeks maybe even more. I like it but i'm stuck on this one stage! :(

      2. I don't have an iPhone and I really don't play games on my phone. I have flight control, and a few card games and scrabble.

      3. i have flight control for my iphone. i don't like it as much as angry birds or PvZ or risk.

      4. It is worth it, especially since its free. I have had the Beta for a few weeks and beat all of the levels. Just started in on the Full Version.

I love Air Control, Hungry Shark, & Crush the Castle.

    1. Yep. I was having a conversation wit ha friend the other day and basically told him that there's no way the Rangers win 2 games that Cliff Lee doesn't pitch. As such, write this one off.

  8. I use the apple ear buds. I replace them about every 3 months so something more expensive wouldn’t be prudent. I replace them so often because I lose them, wash them, or by some other means compromise them.

    1. yeah I would be too worried about having to pay to replace expensive headphones if something happened to them, and if I can barely afford to buy them in the first place I don't wanna think about re-purchasing them should something happen (because when you really absolutely don't want something bad to happen, it will).

  9. As I replied to Cami above, I've been using some Sony PIIQ earbuds for about two months now and I really like them. Unlike most clip-less earbuds, these stay in my ears no matter how much I turn my head.

Well, unless I went all exorcist on somebody and my head started spinning all the way around. I'm sure they'd come out then.

  10. I don't really use headphones for gaming outside of absolutely having to use them for communicating during multi-player games. And only then, I'll use the cheapie XBL headset that came with the console. Not exactly the most high-tech or comfortable headset in the world, but it gets the job done.

Aside from that, I'll use the earphones that came with my iPhone to watch movies on my MacBook on the rare occasions that I have to travel on a plane.

    -M
