Coffee Talk #202: I Want My Wikipedia TV!!!

Most of you know my television habits — I watch WWE wrestling, HBO boxing, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and American Idol. Compared to most of my friends, I don’t watch a lot of TV. I never got into Lost or 24. While I’ve enjoyed some episodes of Dexter, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, True Blood, and [insert popular show here], I never really cared enough to follow those series regularly. I’m generally more entertained by the Internet than television, but there’s one thing that would absolutely keep me glued to the tube: Wikipedia TV.

Welcome to Coffee Talk! Let’s start off the day by discussing whatever is on your (nerd chic) mind. Every morning I’ll kick off a discussion and I’m counting on you to participate in it. If you’re not feelin’ my topic, feel free to start a chat with your fellow readers and see where it takes you. Whether you’re talking about videogames, the stupidity of beanball contests, Intel buying McAfee, or Antonio Margarito getting rejected for a California state boxing license, Coffee Talk is the place to do it.

In my head there’s this interactive Wikipedia experience on television that’s powered by Google Android’s voice search. Results would come up illustrated by oodles of photos and videos. Each entry can be narrated by the voice of your choice (all of my Wikipedia entries would be narrated by Kevin Conroy). This would be a brilliant way to waste time and learn. Kids would get much more out of this than the Disney Channel. Hell, I want to have kids just to see them become geniuses through Wikipedia TV.

What do you think of my vision? Would you use it? Are you even interested in interactive television? Should I call Kevin Conroy’s agent and have him record my voicemail recording?

  1. @topic I think that's a great idea but I think James Earl Jones should do the voice acting

    @Derek Lee now you want to be traded?

  2. Julie Benz (Dexter's wife and the picture posted) is not only from Pittsburgh, but she's from my side of Pittsburgh (the East End) so she's full of win. I know this from Wikipedia.

    I think it's an interesting concept, but you would need about 2 million servers chained together before RAID level 1 redundancy for it to work.

  3. I'm all for this idea. I think broadcast companies would have no problem getting on this train unling Google TV.

    @rpad As for getting Kevin Conroy to do your voicemail….DO IT! and share said recording with us.

    @intel buying McAfee

    I don't see why this is a big deal. intel makes processors right? somone explain please.

    @Margarito's hopes getting shot down in CA again

    I'm not surprised, have they nailed down a location for the his fight w/Pacquiao??

    @beanball contests

    those are okay, as long as someone doesnt get hurt.

    @redtailman

    Derrek Lee wants to win and he knew the Angels weren't going to go anywhere. One of the privileges of being a veteran.

  4. @Topic

    I love Wikipedia. I would love interactive TV. The combo of the 2 would be amazing. I assume it would be like having informative show ever aired on TLC, The History Channel, NatGeo & Discovery on TiVo. I have Encarta on disc and t is fun to play the games on it while learning little facts. I am all about absorbing more stuff. I wish more people played trivia (sorry just a side thought)

    @Any Computer People

    Has anyone here ever replaced a laptop screen? I am supposed to replace one and I found it online for $110. I thought it would just be taking out the 4 screws that hold it in but I then realized I have to disassemble the entire bezel and put it in. I have a feeling YouTube is going to be my friend on this one.

    @Eggs

    We just had to throw away 75+ Dozen eggs at our restaurant due to a massive egg recall. I just went and bought another 60 dozen eggs that haven't been recalled (yet at least)

  5. Yeah, Toney is washed up.

    That's just one of the cons However… if he CAN beat Couture, it will speak volumes for boxers in MMA.

    @ Slicky

    I'm a trivia nerd as well. I play trivia games whenever I can because I absorb things like my name was Rogue all the time. Hell, to this day I still remain undefeated in Scene-It.

  6. @N8R

    I have both SceneIt games on the 360.

    All of the BUZZ! games with all the add-on packs on the PS3.

    Buzz! on PSP

    and BuzzTime trivia home video game (sucky version) that they play at Buffalo Wild Wings and the like. I go to BWW every weekend to drink and play trivia (more I drink the better I get lol)

    My younger brother won the State Championship for QuizBowl in the individual and his team also took first overall.

  7. @n8r

    that's true. i wish i could make a decision but i don't watch UFC as much as i should. boxing is my sport when it comes to fighting. As much as toney is washed up boxing wise he could still have it but i don't see how he can beat Couture without a tune up match. Lastly, how focus is Couture with his number one movie being out. He should be on a little publicity tour for the movie right?? it's kind of toss up for me.

  8. @SlickyEggs;

    Don't throw them away man. You just need proper marketing. For example, separate the bad eggs to make omelets out of them and sell them for about 50 cents apiece. On the menu put (as a new item) "Salmonella Special- Limited Time Only!" with a huge disclaimer afterwards.

    Trust me, people will love it… those who don't die, that is. But hey, you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, right?

  9. I just got in 1 of the cables I ordered form Amazon (the other will be here on the 26th, hooray for free 2nd day shipping).

    But it is my 3.5mm headphone to RCA video cable. My phone does TV out now and I LOVE IT.

    I just hooked it up and the games actually look impressive, like 1st gen PS2 games or better. I can browse the internet way easier now so it doesn't matter what size screen I bought.

    I tonight I am going to set this up on my LCD and set it to my Night Home Dock app. That's going to be 1 loud ass huge clock in the morning with my surround sound on.

  10. @Iceman

    Speaking of Salmonella. It has always been something I have wanted to do but never had the balls to do it….I want to open a "Sam & Ella's" restaurant.

    1. @N8R I don't think it would require extraordinary server power. The voice search is easy. The rest is streaming audio and video, which would be less bandwidth than Hulu.

  11. @Slicky

    I bet there are some people out there somewhere who would eat at a place with that name. haha.

    @WikiTV

    I think the idea is cool, and I agree with you Ray about tv. I usually just have it on as something to have in the background. If I really watch something there are a couple select things I will watch, especially documentaries. WikiTV could probably get a lot of support from people, but academics and universities would completely boycott that channel.

    I think that there are a lot of great qualities of wikipedia, and as a research tool it can be used effectively as a starting point. But it really cannot go any further than that because there are no safeguards in place to guarantee that the information is correct and accurate in all cases in the same manner that something like a trade journal can do. That is one of the biggest problems that Wikipedia faces in academic settings and what a lot of today's younger generation in college is being forced to "learn" about this resource.

    WikiTV could be great, but it would need great marketing and to get a lot of people on board with the idea that it presents respectable and accurate information.

  12. @SG

    That's cool. I would love to do it but I am against software piracy with video games, but copying movies seems okay (is that odd?)

    Also $150 seems steep.

  13. I agree with slicky $150 is a lot to lay. Also pre-orders are being taken?? It leads me to believe this is fake. I'm not into software piracy either. I tried jailbreaking my wii only to have it play dvds but i had no luck with it believe it or not

  14. @slicky

    I'm not in to pirating games either, but I don't mind copying music or movies. I'd actually use it to install my games on the HDD and just leave my discs on the shelf. That way I still have the physical copy that I was able to purchase on sale or clearance lol.

    Honestly, I don't mind copying anything I have purchased. In fact I lost a bunch of music, movies, and games during Katrina that I have never replaced.

    @tokz

    I think it could be real. To be honest if you are using your PS3 as your media hub and would like to be able to copy your paid for titles to the device and play w/o a disc, that know how and coding deserves to be compensated.

  15. @smartguy

    i agree that work needs to be compensated but you should always be weary of jailbreak software promised but not available yet. A lot of people get scammed looking for jailbreaks if they don't know about the iphone dev team. They pay for the software but then get an e-mail saying that they will receive the jailbreak software once it has been completed. i wasn't one of them but if you read their forums people ask this questions once in awhile on that site.

  16. @iceman

    Caveat emptor??? Is that like quid pro quo??? (j/k) i juat always wanted to use quid pro quo
